Sternberg raising some issues

Having a president that comes from a university where they have had major success in football, and moderate success in basketball, and a shit ton of success in wrestling is fairly helpful. That's the kind of guy we need in charge, he recognizes how important having a successful athletic program is. Successful athletics = increased donations, increased enrollment, and higher visibility in the state, and the region.

The consultant was hired some time ago. The hiring had nothing to do with the CSU game.

It's a good move, and a standard one, for a new president to get a third party's view of athletics. The academic side of the house generally doesn't, and shouldn't, have expertise on how to run what are essentially semi-pro sports organizations.

This is perhaps the best news that I've ever considered since having the POKES become a passion in my life.

It would appear based upon President Sternberg's comments that the mediocrity that has come to define the WYOMING Football & Basketball programs bothers him as much as it bothers many (but not all) of us.

"It’s not only about the league play. It’s about our special relationship with Colorado State. So I think that every University of Wyoming fan was very disappointed," Sternberg said. "But I think it’s modifiable. We need to do better, and I’m optimistic that we will do better.”

I think you are right on with this statement. I think President Sternberg takes UW Athletics very seriously as an important part of the university.

I think they will say lower your academic standards for athletes. Increases the base of athletes you can recruit from. Boise st. Is an example of that type of recruiting. It's also why schools like Texas st. can pick up better talent after being d1 for a year. I don't see why a school like Uw should have self guided limitations on academics, transfers, and jucos while schools in the SEC openly pay players ( cam newton).

I say get a bunch of D grade point average athletes who have high interest from the PAC 12 conference and let them take interdisciplinary studies. She have a pretty good athlete tutor center. I fail to see why we have to play by a different set of rules than other ( major) schools.

I'm with you BP....we've have enough negative press and troubles with some of our student athletes as well as times where the academic progress of some have put us in a negative light.

Kudos to Mike Vorel for this upcoming story and TheCup for the scoop. It's a very interesting development. Reading the early thread on Ian's site, I get a big kick out of Pope Ringolsby scrambling to let anyone and everyone know that he knew about a hired consultant weeks ago. I do not share his concern of monies spent on multiple possible consultants and the assertion that any fees could have been better spent directly by the athletics department.

What I hope, desperately, is that a consultant hired by Sternberg is used as an independent justification to fire Burman. All this is speculation right now of course, but it sure makes me giddy to think about what a hired, neutral third party thinks of the results of UW's sports teams under the watch of Tom Burman. I'm very optimistic that big, long overdue, positive changes will be happening soon.

Let me just say I never said I knew about the hired consultant weeks ago. I merely pointed out that in a phone call after I first heard of the story I found out the deal was signed Sept. 6, and if you have been paying attention to what has happened it came out a day later that the deal was signed Sept. 6, the committee was in Laramie Oct. 1-2, and all the search and study was done before the CSU game was ever played I have no problem with the evaluations. I think they are great. My problem is trying to jump on a wagon and act like the events are proactive to the last week or so, when in reality they were not prompted in any manner by the results of this season.

I enjoyed the stadium. It's old but cozy and decent vantage points. The fans were generally fine. There are always a few that have to show off but other than the final 10 minutes it was all enjoyable, particularly Curt Jimerson appearing at the CJC tailgate. Great man.

p.s. saw no reason to carry over all the other conversation. hope that's okay.

I realize that Texas State and CSU werent the reasons, but they could have been the knockout punch.

It didn't have anything to do with the evaluation but it definitely had a lot to do with bringing the evaluation public.
