Sternberg is out.

I went to the press conference and I have a few questions left unanswered. First off just for those of you not there it seemed like this was a VERY popular decision with students as well as the faculty in attendance. My big question is if he "resigned" last night why did it take a 9 hour meeting to announce it? Also I saw from a couple media outlets that Sternberg said that he had not resigned and will not resign. IMHO he was forced out and they bought him out since they are paying his salary through next year. Also the board said they supported all personnel decisions that he had made, so then why would he feel the need to resign? For the first time I am extremely embarrassed to be a student at this university and don't see any positive coming from this. We have lost a president with great vision as well as a great hope to turn us into a premier university in all aspects. I will hope for the best, but I can see nothing good from this.
Yank....any idea why the students and faculty would be thankful he's resigning? That seems kind of odd.

A lot of them are very mad about the law school dean resigning. The faculty just hasn't seemed to like him since day 1. ASUW was mad at him for reasons that I am unaware, but there were very few there who seemed to be mad about it and weren't excited when the announcement was made.

I saw that too - but it seemed the question was 'Is the board terminating you?' vs 'Are you resigning?'
It would probably take 9 hours to decide who would take over and what the compensation package would be (which doesn't make much sense either.)

I've never seen his contract. It does seem weird that resignation would include an additonal full year of salary. Things aren't adding up here.

So... Dr. Cowles is the interim President. He was one of my favorite professors in Computer Science (not sure if I was the only one, though - I love proof theory), but as President?

Weird.

Edit: Nevermind, just a rumor.

Trying to process all of this but keep finding myself feeling more reconcilatory as I watch Chuck Pagano coach the Colts on TV. Exasperating incongruity.

Easton stepping down was a huge deal. I think the faculty didn't like him because most of them also have the good enough is good enough mentality. I think ASUW seemed pretty happy about it too, and I think part of that is just related to the general faculty and school of law problems. Just my opinion though

My beloved alma mater has turned into a circus side show with a bit of John Wayne playing Calvinball. What in the hell is going on?

Thinking the same thing. I do get the feeling there's more going on here that none of us knows about. That's obvious. LOL

Not to sound like a Star Wars fan here but....

For the first time in my life, I am genuinely embarrassed to have been such a proponent to my school and my state.

If the trustees and donors are seriously happy with things the way they are in Laramie, fuck em. Montana and N. Dak just became my favorite teams.

This is easily the most humiliating and embarrassing scenario for UW. What coach/recruit/AD would willingly come now?

I know how you feel.
All of a sudden I can't wait to transfer to Oregon State. I am embarrassed and the fact the majority of the students are glad he is gone just makes it even worse.
I feel like I am surrounded by idiots.

Welcome to the real world young Jedi. We are a nation of every kid gets to play, every kid gets a trophy, every kid gets everything they ever wanted. We reward them for being average. And then we wonder why average is good enough at UW.

I believe it is time for true fans to speak with their wallets. Stop contributing to the University, stop supporting sub-standard products in the classrooms and on the field of play. When the spigot runs dry, then and only then will the good ole boys figure out that they stepped in it big this time. Writing letters to the BOT members, or the state government might make one feel better, but they will not change one thing at Laramie. The only thing these geezers understand is money, and if the fans don't come, and the kids don't enroll and pay tuition, then maybe they will see the light. As it stands now, this once storied institution is being reduced to rubble right before our eyes.

RIP UW.

Have you ever pondered the idea that this is what was supposed to happen. Maybe the BOT brought him in to be the axe man and get rid of the riff-raff and then be gone. He has been on the job for roughly 160 days and he is going to make somewhere in the neighborhood of $800,000 with next years buy out clause. Now they can bring a new president in and restructure the university with no crap from anyone because it was all Sternberg's fault. The new guy could be a freaking hero! This is the way it was meant to be! TRUST ME!

We will probably never really know the whole story. As Mark Twain said, "If you do not read the paper you are uninformed. If you do read the paper you are misinformed".

Beaver Dude!

You're our Beaver on the street. Have you asked a bunch of the students why they are glad he is gone? It would be interesting to know why they take this stance.

Report back!
