Working Like a Dog. . .
With preseason practice underway for Wyoming's fall sports offerings, we got to thinking about those folks who do so much behind the scenes; like those in the equipment room, the training room, media relations, marketing, facilities and the academic wing. The godfather of all these areas is of course Mad Dog Aanonsen who begins his 33rd year at Wyoming, after joining UW's team in 1979. Dog and his staff--assistants Joe Paumer and Caleb Dill and eight pups (student assistants) order equipment for all UW Intercollegiate Athletic programs. No doubt Dog is an icon in the equipment business. This is a crazy time of year for him and his staff, but he took some time out of his day to give us some equipment numbers. For instance, he ordered 347 pairs of cleated football shoes for this season, and another 276 pairs of conditioning shoes. By the way, the shoes range in size from 8 1/2 to 18's. Or how about 554 pairs of gloves--practice gloves, game gloves, offensive linemen gloves, defensive linemen gloves and so on. He orders 400 regular sets of bucking horse and rider decals for the helmets, 200 sets of the Cowboy flag, 150 sets of the yellow. He has over 200 white helmets, and 150 brown helmets. In one order this summer, he received 2,290 pieces of equipment, ranging from practice shirts to sweat suits to sideline coats! All of that is ordered in October and November for the upcoming seasons. Dog works with four industrial-sized washers and five dryers to do laundry. Following every football practice he and staff wash 15 loads of practice gear. Each load weighing in at 65 pounds. That's a lot of dirty clothes. His worst nightmare? Trying to get field paint stains, especially green paint. Grass stains are cake, paint is the problem. Oh, by the way while you let all those numbers sink in, remember one really good number. . .there is only one Bronze Boot and it remains in the Cowboy locker room!

They're Here. . .
Three of Wyoming's four fall sports have reported and are in the practice mode. While the numbers ebb and flow there were 105 student-athletes reporting for football, 15 for volleyball and 27 for soccer. The cross country team reports in two weeks.
