Learning at a High Level. . .
It's been a decade since Cowboy and Cowgirl student-athletes have achieved in the classroom as well as they did this past academic year. The combined grade-point average was 3.04. The overall student population produced a GPA of 2.91. Very impressive!

Time is of the Essence. . .

Football game times have finally been set for the home season at War Memorial Stadium.
Sept. 8, Toledo, 2 p.m.
Sept. 15, Cal Poly, 4 p.m.
Oct. 13, Air Force, 5 p.m.
Oct. 27, Boise State, 1:30 p.m.
Nov. 3, Colorado State, 2:30 p.m.
Nov. 24, San Diego State, 1:30 p.m.
Some of the special days associated with those games include Hall of Fame, Ag Day, Band Day, Campus Pass for the Cal Poly game, and Homecoming and Military Day for the Air Force game.

From the Ticket Office. . .
As the fall sports season draws nearer, it's time to start thinking about purchasing tickets if you don't already have them. Football season tickets are on sale as well as the 3-Pack. Season tickets are available for $195. There are two different 3-Pack options, Gold--CSU and your choice of two other home games other than Boise State--and Brown--Boise State and your choice of two other games excluding CSU. The price is $99 for adults and $48 for youth (three through 18). If you are interested in a group, the ticket office offers great group rates as well. Contact the ticket office for more information, or visit here.

Renewals for men's and women's basketball season-tickets are now underway. For more information on all ticket products, contact the ticket office at 877-WYO-FAN1.

Cowboy Joe Club News. . .
Many, many thanks to the Ford Motor Company for its title sponsorship of the 2012 Cowboy Joe Club Golf Series. A sincere thanks also to Laramie GM Auto Center and Infinity Power and Controls for donating the pickup which will be raffled at the Air Force game on Oct. 13. Also thanks to the many local sponsors who participated. Between the golf tournaments and the truck raffle, a total of $226,000 was raised for student-athlete scholarships, which is an all-time record! That success is due in large part to those sponsorships. The Series grows each year. Remember you can still purchase raffle tickets for the truck through the Cowboy Joe Club office. Tickets can be purchased in the following increments: one for $20, three for $50, seven for $100 or 12 for $150.

If you would like to attend the Cowboy tailgate party at Austin prior to the Texas game, please visit here. Tickets are $25 each if you order prior to Aug. 24, and $35 each after that. The party will start three-and-a-half hours before the game.

The Cowboy Joe Club Auction, presented by Infinity Power and Controls will be here before you know it. It's scheduled for Sept. 7, at Cheyenne's Little America. It's always a great event and to learn more about the 26th annual edition or to donate auction items, contact the Club office at 307-766-6242.

Around the Chutes. . .
Cowboy offensive center Nick Carlson is receiving a lot of preseason attention. He is on the Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List as well as the Rimington Trophy Fall Watch List. He's a good football player, and an even better person.

Chris Pendleton, Cowboy assistant wrestling coach, also has received his share of recognition. He is one of a select few coaches who have been chosen to attend a coaching leadership academy next month. The academy is hosted by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.

Congrats to the Wyoming swim team for earning more academic honors. As a team the Cowgirls earned a College Swimming Coaches Association of America Scholar All-America honor while four individuals received the Scholar All-America award. The four are Brandon Fischer, Trevor LeValley, Jayce Calhoon and Morgan Hartigan.

In less than a month--Aug. 14 to be exact--the fall sports season opens with the soccer team's exhibition against Colorado School of Mines. That event will begin at 4:30 p.m. The Cowgirls, guided by new head coach Peter Cuadrado, open the regular season at home on Aug. 17, with Montana (4:30 p.m.) and Lamar on Aug. 19 (1 p.m.).

Volleyball begins its season with the Uni-Wyo Federal Credit Union Wyoming Invitational on Aug. 24.

About the kickoffs, I miss the good ole days where all of the home games started at Noon except for Homecoming which started at 1 p.m.

Of when the athletic dept wasn't making money and national exposure for the Pokes was unheard of?

I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing the direction college football coverage is headed, although standard TV watching will be a thing of the past in 10-20 years. I can honestly say I have not had cable TV for over 5 years now but I still watch any game I want; i.e. streaming(legal or illegal). I cannot remember the last time I watched ESPN or any other major network. All these big money conference contracts with ESPN, CBS, etc. will no longer matter as I forsee college football teams becoming more "individalized" in the way their games are broadcast. I see a point when every college program will have their own network or streaming access to every game. BYU has certainly been ahead of the times in some regards.

MLB TV is also a great example. I can watch every game of my favorite team anytime anywhere. I think eventually all sports will be going this route as traditional TV watchers realize what options are available and as older generations die off.

If I could pay for just Wyoming sports, I would ditch the dish. Wife watched Netflix mostly.
