Launching on the Web. . .
If you haven't heard, the Intercollegiate Athletics Department website has re-launched this afternoon. Check it out at wyomingathletics.com. Also take a peek at the Cowboy Joe Club's new site, cowboyjoeclub.com.
Riding for the Brand. . .
The slogan for UW's intercollegiate sports year is "Wyoming Athletics, Ride for the Brand".
Of course "Ride for the Brand" originally came from the book We Pointed them North: Recollections of a Cowpuncher. It's been re-stated in James P. Owen's Cowboy Ethics. We look at the phrase as a great description of the passion, loyalty and dedication of our Wyoming fans. It also describes the work ethic, pride and gratitude of Wyoming student-athletes and coaches. They are great ambassadors for this great state, and appreciate this state providing them the opportunity as well as the support.
Facilities Update. . .
Several athletics facilities are receiving facelifts in the next two months. Installation of a new indoor track and infield for War Memorial Fieldhouse is scheduled to begin at the end of this week.
The floor of the UniWyo Sports Complex is receiving its annual refinishing. That work began on Monday. The Arena-Auditorium floor will receive the same treatment and is scheduled for August 4-15. The new Mountain West Conference logo will be applied to both surfaces and in other areas of the athletics facilities plant as well.
Jonah Field at War Memorial Stadium also is receiving a maintenance check. Workers will begin repainting the field on July 14. Maintenance of the field also is underway in addition to the paint job. That maintenance involves re-grooming the field with granulated rubber. That process is set for July 10-12 while the painting is scheduled for July 14. The field, complete with the new MWC logos, is slated to be ready by August 4.
X's and O's for the Ladies. . .
Ladies, mark your calendars for August 27, as the football staff hosts the second annual X's and O's Women's Football Clinic at the Wildcatter Stadium Club. The event begins at 10 a.m. and will include plenty of football talk and lunch. Cost is $50 and ladies may register by calling the football office (766-3155) or online through the Cowboy Joe Club website. This event was a huge success last year and will included Head Coach Dave Christensen, members of his staff and other key department personnel.
Cheer Tryouts Next Week. . .
Selection for the final remaining spots on the UW Cheer and Pom Squads for the 2011-2012 sports seasons is scheduled for Thursday and Friday (July 21-22) in the UniWyo. There are still three spots remaining for the Pom Squad and five for the Cheer Squad. Eleven spots on each squad have been selected thus far. For more information or an application, contact Marcie Powell at (307) 766-4940 or [email protected] or online at wyomingathletics.com.
Cowboy Joe Club News. . .
The Club's new website is up and running, with lots of good information and is located at cowboyjoeclub.com.
Remember just two tournaments remain on this year's golf tour. The Club is still looking for sponsors and a few more players for both Casper and Laramie. The Casper event is set for Friday, August 5, at the Casper Country Club. That begins at 1 p.m. The final event of the regular tour is set for Saturday, August 6, at the Jacoby Golf Course in Laramie. That tournament begins at 8 a.m. With those two events remaining, the tour has already netted close to $150,000!
Upcoming Events. . .
Soccer is the only sport hosting camps for the remainder of July and tennis is the only sport hosting a camp after that. The Soccer Residential Camp is set for July 21-24 and the Soccer High School Team Camp is scheduled for July 24-27. Tennis will have two camps in August. The first is set for August 1-5 and the second from August 24-27.
