Getting to Know Us. . .
From time to time we want to acquaint you with members of our athletics department staff and coaches. Our first visit is with Matt Whisenant, Deputy Athletics Director.

In January, Whisenant will have been at UW for a decade. A native of Manassas, VA, he is the youngest of four sons of Herman and Joyce Whisenant. His father was a judge and his mother a high school special education teacher. Whisenant and his wife Kim have a son and a daughter. He is a graduate of East Tennessee State where he played defensive end and outside linebacker for Buccaneers.

Here are Matt's answers to a couple of questions we had:

If you could have excelled at another sport what would it have been?
"I always wanted to be a major league baseball player. As a guy who played football, I thought it would be easier on the body."

Best moment at Wyoming?
"When the Cowboys beat Utah (March 2, 2002, Cowboys won 57-56) for the conference championship at the Double A. With a full house (record crowd 16,089) the energy was amazing. That was my first year here, and it was so exciting."

Favorite movie?
"This is a hard one, I love war movies and there have been so many great ones. But I would have to say Saving Private Ryan is my favorite."

Favorite food?
"I love a lot of things, but probably Mexican food is my favorite."

A Welcome to the New Spirit Squad Coach. . .
Late last week the athletics department welcomed Marcie Powell as the new Head Spirit Squad Coach. She will oversee both of UW's cheer and pom squads. She comes to Wyoming with 15 years experience teaching cheer and dance. For the past eight years she has been the head cheer and dance coach for Poudre High School in Fort Collins, CO.

There are still openings on both squads for the 2011-12 season. According to Powell, five spots are open for the cheer squad and three for the pom squad. To fill those remaining spots, tryouts are scheduled for Thursday and Friday, July 21 and 22 at the UW Athletics Department. For more information contact Powell at (307) 766-4940 or visit wyomingathletics.com.

Football Season Ticket Watch. . .

Around the Chutes. . .

Men's basketball is hosting "A Day with the Cowboys" in Cody today and Gillette tomorrow. Cowboy hoops' Team Camp begins on the 30th and runs through July 2.

Tennis's Camp Session II is underway and runs through Friday while wrestling has two camps going, Technique Camp through Saturday and Intensive Camp through June 30.

Cowboy Joe Club News. . .
Just three events remain on the Club's summer golf tour, the Purple Sage Golf Club at Evanston this Saturday, the Casper Country Club, August 5, and the Jacoby Golf Course at Laramie on August 6. Both Evanston and Casper tee off at 1 p.m. The Laramie tourney starts at 8.

How important are these tournaments? Through the first 13 events the Club has raised close to $150,000!

Remember Century-level members have an opportunity to order two additional tickets to the Nebraska game through June 24. It may not be possible for all Century members to be accommodated. Requests by members at this level will be allocated on a priority-point basis. Any requests that are not filled will be placed on a waiting list.

I'd like to be excited about the season ticket numbers, but I have a bad feeling the majority of those new buyers wear red. Hard to believe there are that many new, excited season ticket buyers coming off of a 3-9 season.

There was a CJC post on Facebook yesterday saying very few of the season tickets this year have Nebraska addresses. And, even if a majority of the new season tickets are going to Nebrasak fans, that will likely be less than 1,000.

Those that want to belive it will be a sea of red can go ahead and think that....but it will be just like the Texas game.

Go Pokes!!
