Maier Competes at NCAA Regionals. . .
This is a big week for Gabe Maier. Wyoming's All-Conference golfer will compete at the 2011 NCAA Regional Golf Tournament at Colorado National Golf Club at Erie, CO, on Thursday. The event concludes on Saturday. He joins David Hearn (2001) and Mike Urbatchka (2002) as the only three Cowboys to earn All-MWC recognition.
Sports Festivals a Success. . .
Last week's annual Sports Festivals were again a great success. A number of Cowboy and Cowgirl student athletes as well as coaches spent last week conducting clinics for children in Casper, Buffalo, Sheridan, Basin, Greybull, Lovell, Cody, Powell, Worland and Thermopolis. The tour reached some 3,800 children during the week.
Fieldhouse Facelift. . .
Construction on War Memorial Fieldhouse's new indoor track will begin in July. The Fieldhouse, one of the great all-purpose facilities of its time was originally opened over 60 years ago. Construction on the project should be completed by early September.
Football Season Tickets Continue to Climb. . .
As of this morning, a total of 9,077 season tickets have been sold for the 2011 Cowboy football season. That is a new Wyoming record. The old mark of 8,336 was set in 2009.
Cowboy Joe Club News. . .
The Club's Golf Series makes stops in the northern part of Wyoming this week. On Friday, Powell will host the tour at the Powell Golf Club. That tournament tees off at 1 p.m. On Saturday Worland will be the host city at its Green Hills Golf Club. That event will begin at 9 a.m. The three golf tournaments last week at Worland, Gillette and Denver combined to net $40,500! Thanks to all who played. Club blitzes in Washakie, Big Horn and Hot Springs counties close this Saturday (May 21).
Nebraska ticket priority deadline for Club members at the Trail Boss and Top Hand levels is May 27. Those levels are eligible for six tickets. On May 30, Steer-a-Year and Wrangler levels receive their opportunity for extra Nebraska tickets. Those levels will have a chance to buy four additional tickets for next season's Nebraska game, and will have until June 10th to order. Opportunity for the Century Club will begin on June 13, and extend through June 24. Those individuals will be eligible to purchase two Nebraska tickets. This offer is subject to ticket availability.
Last Week. . .
The men's track team finished sixth at the Mountain West Conference Championships last weekend at Ft. Collins, and the Cowgirls eighth. Afiya Walker won her first outdoor title in the 400-meter dash. She also won that event in the indoor championship. Freshman Erin Kirby surprised everyone by winning the 400-meter hurdles with the second-best time in Wyoming history (59.39). She became only the second freshman in MWC history to win the event. Kirby, Walker, Diana Long, Candace Wollert and Lindsey Simmons were named to the All-Mountain West Conference Track and Field team for 2011.
