Services for David Schmitt Thursday. . .

Although there are nearly 400 student-athletes within the halls and venues of this athletics department one never expects an empty chair. In the midst of the excitement of springtime on a college campus--the completion of the school year and the anticipation of those graduating and looking forward to the next stage of their lives--tragedy struck this university early Saturday morning. David Schmitt, one of the school's bright stars died following a tragic accident at War Memorial Stadium. He was scheduled to participate in graduation ceremonies at UW on the morning of his death, completing his bachelor's degree in geology. An outstanding student, leader, and student-athlete, David was respected and appreciated by all who knew him. He was one of those special indivdiuals--swim-team captain, President of the UW Athletic Department's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC)--a young man you could count on. Many of his teammates, friends in this university community, student-athletes from other programs and those of us fortunate enough to watch him grow and mature here will honor him on Thursday at Casper's First United Methodist Church. The service begins at 11 a.m. Beyond the questions of why these things happen we will celebrate the life of a wonderful young man. He was a credit to his family and to his university. The department is making bus transportation available to current and former UW student-athletes who wish to attend the service Thursday. The Schmitt family has established the David Schmitt Memorial Fund. Contributions may be made to: The David Schmitt Memorial Fund in Care of Newcomer Funeral Home, 710 E. Second St., Casper, WY 82601.

Congratulations to Maier. . .

Gabe Maier, the Cowboys' outstanding senior golfer, was honored on Monday by receiving an at-large selection to compete at the 2011 NCAA Regional Golf Tournament at the Colorado National Golf Club in Erie, CO. He produced a heck of a year, and played extremely well in the Mountain West Conference Tournament last weekend. The regional tourney is scheduled for May 19-21. The Cody native becomes the second Cowboy to reach an NCAA Regional in consecutive years. The only other Poke to do it was current PGA player David Hearn in 1999-2002.

Around the Chutes. . .

Thanks to Cowboy fans, the athletics department has set an all-time record for football season tickets sold. As of this morning, 8,990 season-tickets had been purchased for the Cowboys' 2011 home season. That breaks the old record of 8,336 set in 2009.

Student-athletes and coaches from UW are currently on the road working with hundreds of children during the annual Sports Festivals. The tour began yesterday at Casper. Everyone is in Buffalo and Sheridan today and will makes stops in the Basin, Greybull, Burlington area,Lovell, Cody, Powell, Worland and Thermopolis before week's end.

The Athletics Department is happy to welcome a new coach to the fold. Villis Ozols is the newest member of Carrie Yerty's volleyball staff. He replaces Tony Sunga who has been named head coach at Drake University. Ozols comes to UW from the University of Colroado where he was an assistant. He and his wife Andra have four children.
