A Title IX Pioneer Who Was Some Player. . .
As part of the 40 Years of Title IX celebration, the UW athletics website is featuring great Cowgirl athletes through the seasons. It's a fun and interesting look-back at some of Wyoming's most celebrated women's athletes. Dale Ann Meeker, the very first women's basketball player to receive a scholarship at UW, is featured this month. Meeker lettered for the Cowgirls from 1977 through 1979. A native of Powell, she was a member of one of the greatest Cowgirl hoop teams in school history. The 1978-79 team posted a 25-7 record and earned the very first postseason tournament appearance for the Cowgirls. The team was inducted into the UW Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame four years ago. After graduating from UW, Meeker was the girls' basketball coach in her hometown. She is currently in her 29th year of teaching at the Powell Middle School, and her 30th year of coaching. She is still coaching track. Check out the website for the entire Meeker story. Title IX was signed into law on June 23, 1972 by President Richard Nixon.
