Personally, I have to say that I am somewhat disappointed that there wasn't more success in finding a big body for that last scholarship. I wasn't a fan of signing the young man from St. Louis Univ., his numbers were not impressive plus he has had injury issues, so I wasn't sad to see him go to another school. But slightly surprised that it was Grand Canyon, it seems like he is more interested in what is happening off the campus than contributing on the basketball court.

But I was hoping that Mitchell Kupchak would be coming. The story on his visit and recruiting was somewhat murky, I wasn't even sure if he was ever offered by UW. I was also hoping for the big kid from Boston College that went to Davidson. I never got my hopes up for Bouchet, thought that he would probably either end up at TCU or Minnesota, and was a little surprised that he ended up at Oregon. It didn't appear that the coaches got on to him until late and the recruiting went no where.

I just hope that if the Pokes hold this scholarship back that they really make it count next year, and I do mean really count next year. The Pokes will certainly be young and inexperienced down low, and I would imagine that we will see some growing pains. But again, next years scholarships have to be impact players, not projects, it is time that we got a few of those guys, imo.

If we aren't going to land a 5th year senior, hold on to it for next year. Right now the Pokes have 3 main targets, with two scholarships to give. Any of the three would be solid pick ups

Not sure we have any so-called projects on the team. Maybe Barnes because he hasn't played organized ball for as long as most college aged basketball players. But, he was recruited by some big name basketball schools and shut down UNLV's 5 star center recruit in an AAU game.

Depth is what needs to be developed with such a young team...but some promising players who were either freshman last year or freshman this year.

I actually thought the opposite. I didn't see why we would need a player like Maxwell Kupchak (low major recruit, tweener, etc.), but thought Glaze would be a perfect fit that could contribute next year while allowing us to still fill that scholarship in the 2016 class.

None of that matters now though. It will be interesting to see how the 2016 class shapes up.

Agree with holding it for next year, a lot of high quality prospects that are seriously considering UW in that class.

Disagree about "projects" as all 4 of our big men on the roster next year I would classify as "projects". Herndon is making progress in his development and should be a solid contributor next year in his 3rd year in the program, but he is certainly a project that has used a redshirt year to help develop physically to play at this level. Barnes has been discussed on here quite a bit and is a guy that has a long way to go in terms of skill development but is more physically mature (he is also old for his class). In terms of the incoming kids, Moemeka appears to be a very raw player skill wise with tremendous athletic ability while Naughton has a big frame that needs some physical development and skill work.

That's not a problem necessarily, the reality is that polished big men that are ready to contribute at the MWC level are very rare in terms of HS recruits and most of them are top level recruits. We will probably always have to recruit "projects" in the front court and develop them or hope they develop physically. Nance and Cooke both came a long ways during their time at UW as good examples.

My main point is that if you hold back a scholarship, you really should get something special with it. If you aren't going to get a special player with that scholarship next year, why not give it out now if you are looking at the same level of player? Get the same type of player now or next year?

Sigh....When I watch Barnes, I think Sellers. Hoping, yes, but....sigh.
Too early to tell. Sellers had already played some JC ball before coming to Wyoming. He turned out to have a decent offensive game, but couldn't move fast enough on the defensive side. I think Barnes is already a solid defender....just needs to work on the offense. He has better tools than Sellers.....but understand considering he didn't see the floor very often as a true freshman. Go figure.

I don't see that really as Barnes is a much better athlete than Sellers. He's not Larry Nance or Derek Cooke, but he moves well and can get off the ground (two things you couldn't say about Sellers). What Sellers had that Barnes does not yet have however, is a go to offensive post move. If you could combine Sellers little hook shot and soft touch with Barnes strength and activity you could have a pretty decent big man. Hopefully Barnes can develop his offense. His ceiling is much higher than Sellers IMO, but he obviously has a long ways to go. I am optimistic that we will see gradual growth in his game.

I thought we might hold the 2016 schollie since Williams left. It was late in the game when we found out he wouldn't make it.

We have some talented guys on the radar for 16, with Peters, Bassett, and Dialla.

I'm not concerned about the lack of depth in the post. A 5th year would have helped, but why not give the minutes to a youngster that's going to be here a few years?

As far as Barnes is concerned, he's awful young still and green. We'll see how he develops but he has the frame to be another John Summers and become a dominant defensive post presence

This coming season, just got a lot longer.....glad you aren't concerned.

The only thing the staff could have done was to give it to a 5th year senior or a Junior college transfer who could come in a play right away next year and make an impact.

Giving it to the transfers from Boston College or Colorado or giving it to a low graded divison 1 recruit would make no sense because they either wouldn't be allowed to play next year or they wouldn't be good enough and you would be wasting it by giving it to someone who would be locking up that scholarship for more than one year when you could get a better recruit for next year with it.

I would like to see us get one of these late 5th year transfers. This guy would work for a year.

Yeah. I think we would all like to see us get a senior transfer that can play next year. It doesn't look like this kid(Rashid Gaston) can play right away though. Looks like he will have to sit out a year. That isn't what I want.
Personally I want a senior to come in and play next year but the most important part of that is that we have that scholarship for next year. If we can't get a senior to come in for one year or get an impact player I would rather hold onto the scholarship.

Bad move if he has to sit a year. I would think transferring as a Senior you would be graduating, not sitting for year before playing. Anyhow, there are others on the list and seem to be more each day. Hopefully Shyatt can find one to come in for a year.

Yeah, Gaston has to sit a year. Similar to Stanton Kidd transferring from the MEAC to CSU.

Random note on him, looks he attended the same HS as Desmar Jackson. Probably not a good thing.

It will be interesting to see what Shyatt does with the final scholarship. Certainly a 5th year transfer frontcourt player would have been ideal, but they are highly recruited and difficult to land. Might just have to hold it for 2016.

Agreed.
