Spring game?

Here's the official UW recap

LARAMIE, Wyo. (April 26, 2025) – The Wyoming Cowboys held their annual Spring Game on a sunny day inside War Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Gold Team took the contest 21-7, as it marked the 15th and final practice of the spring for the Brown and Gold.

“We needed to have a game today and get players out in a game rhythm and to go through the mechanics in front of fans and I appreciate all the fans that came out and it was a beautiful day,” UW Head coach Jay Sawvel said. “I’m really excited about everything, but we have work to do.”

The scoring opened with a touchdown scamper from Dontae Burch to five the Brown team a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. The score was set up by an interception from linebacker Gary Rutherford. The Gold Team tied the game on a touchdown pass from Gage Brook to Bricen Brantley that was set up by an interception from Brooklyn Cheek.

The Gold Team took a 14-7 lead into the half on a touchdown pass from Landon Sims to tight end Isaac Schoenfeld with 30 seconds left in the half. The Gold Team added to the lead with a pass from Sims to Bean to take a 21-7 lead and the win.

The Gold Team was led by Sims with 144 yards passing with two touchdown passes. Nico Hamilton rushed for 73 yards on 17 carries. Deion DeBlanc hauled in six catches for 48 yards. The defense was led by Evan Eller with nine tackles and one sack.

The Brown Team was led by Mason Drube passing for 175 yards. Kaden Anderson was 8-of-12 passing in the contest. Chris Durr Jr. added seven catches and Jaylen Sargent had 79 receiving yards. Gary Rutherford led the defense with a game-high 11 tackles along with Dash Bauman, as he also added a sack.

I wasn’t there. But the first team offense scoring 7 points against the first team defense (very little experience on first team defense) should be somewhat alarming.

The offense is largely intact. And should be able to muster more than 7 points. I am thinking the O/U might be about 4 wins.
I wasn't there but sounds like many of the starters didn't play much or at all.

"Many of the regulars were on a "pitch count" in this one. This staff knows what those guys can do. Same can be said for a number of starters like Jack Walsh, Caden Barnett, Wes King and John Michael Gyllenborg, among others, who didn't even dress."

Drube got to throw the ball 29 times. Sounds like they wanted to give him a real look to see if he has what it takes to be the back up this season.

That backup QB spot is an important one. Whoever gets it is almost guaranteed to see the field this coming season, and sometimes for a prolonged period of time. You need two good QB’s to be a good college football team.

I have no idea. Unless Kaden falls on his face, I don't want Drube blowing a redshirt sitting on the sideline.
You think many QB's in the NIL era are staying at one university for 5 years? The days of developing players are gone, especially at a university like UW.

After this thread sat for a while, I wondered why nobody brought up how poorly the CJC, Athletic Department, and Football Ops did in putting this event on. It could have been HUGE - the bulk of the east lower stands were full, and it was beautiful out.

UW should have (and always should have by the way) made this a fun event. Put in a PA announcer. Offer more concessions. Hype it up a bit. Hell, maybe sell some swag. Combine it with a media day / kids day. UW whiffed on it again this year.

The Montana spring game had a GSA hosted tailgate prior to the spring game, had merch set up, the NIL guys there, concessions and a few other things. I wondered when I saw UWs setup of the spring game, after having just attended Montana's why they don't do something similar.. esp if it was a nice day. Montana spring game was a Friday night and iffy weather and still had 5000 people there. I heard one explanation as to why, it wasn't a good one, but it was definitely an explanation.

The swag sales they have had at a few past spring games were pretty cool and a good way to draw some extra folks. It was how I put together a large portion of my Wyoming football and basketball jersey collection. Not sure why they haven’t done one of those in several years.

But I totally agree with you - the spring game should be coordinated with other activities to draw more folks/families.

Great info and points...imagine if UW would have thought to bring our NIL folks to the spring game, and made it a true event. Pretty sure it wouldn't cost "them" a dime to do this, and would help the program quite a bit.
