You can tell that Bohl is happy with his top 2 quarterbacks. I got the impression that he's more comfortable with Cam as a game manager and ball control QB. He was impressed with Allen but called him a "gunslinger" and said they needed to school them out. To me, that means playmaker but risk taker.

100% agree. As for Allen, I'd be fine if Bohl and Vigen can eliminate his Cutler tendencies.

There are at least 2 Freshmen coming in this summer who will see a lot of PT this season (if not starting some games). These are not just players to fill holes, but will be players that could easily be in the mix for FOY. My prediction is - we'll end up better than we are predicted to be in pre-season. I'll take that in Bohl's second season.

The first thing I thought of when I saw the numbers for this game was that Josh Allen may be closer to the top job than initially thought. Coffman may indeed have a good year, but it almost feels like there is a bit of a leash now. Any thoughts? I guess ideally is Cam has a great senior campaign and Allen then takes the job for the next two seasons.

With gunslingers you gotta take the good with the bad and hope they have enough good to win the game ala Brett Favre.

Still, at a young age, I'd rather have a kid that can sling it but that you need to reel him in a little than the other way.

You can't teach arm strength. I agree with you about Bohl's comments and encouraging that we have some good options at QB.

i had a really good time on Saturday, our running game is gonna be awesome I think, our passing was ok, but we got some guys that can hit!!!! Overall it was a very productive day and I liked what i saw!!!! Go Pokes

I agree with you but with the running game we should have, I doubt Bohl wants a QB out there taking too many chances. I think running game will open up our pass a bit more this year and Bohl wants a guy to hit the 7 yard gimmie rather than the riskier homerun.

Especially since he wants the team to grind everybody down. A homerun is great in that you get points when it works out, but it also gets the other team's defense off the field faster.

Depends on the gunlsinger, imo. A guy that can make good reads and burn you over the top makes the run game that much more successful. Just the legit threat of it opens up quite a bit.

Still, your point is a good one. I think he has a red shirt + 3 years of eligibility. I haven't watched him play, but it sounds as if Bohl has a lot of options. One would be to RS him this year and to gain a little "control".

Regardless, the QB situation this year sounds much better than last.

I don't think Vigen/Bohl views the deep throw over the top as a example of a gunslinger issue - they really like the fly/post routes to stretch the defense, especially on 2nd and short. Just couldn't do it effectively last year (and didn't have many 2nd and shorts). It's more when QBs throw into double coverage, try squeeze throws in tight coverage when the play really isn't there, or often wing one up on 3rd down just to try to make something happen.

I agree, but what I meant was, an int here or there or stupid play here or there can be offset if the gunslinger does enough good things to open up other components of the offense.

Still, the gunslinger thing might even be unwarranted for him. Have to see him in action before I can really comment much.

Chavez Pownell Jr. is an idiot and tanner gentry should kick his ass, luke Martinez style. He must be the only guy to get called for targeting and ejected in the history of spring games. If idiots like him are making up our starting backfield we're going to see a lot of dumb penalties and missed assignments this year.

As an aside the hit by Chavez Pownell Jr. was a thing of beauty. Perfectly timed, perfectly struck, the flag and the ensuing ejection was a complete joke. If it were a regular season game the flag and the ejection would have been overturned. Pownell is an absolute predator who plays with a ferociousness this team desperately needs on defense...an identity and physicality that needs to be further enhanced. Pownell was in on most every defensive play and his style of play can be infectious to an entire defense.

Slightly different viewpoints on that play....Haha. Wasn't there so I don't have an opinion but I think I saw one of the papers say it most likely wouldn't have been a penalty and was a clean hit.

I agree that our defense has been too soft for too long. However, during the spring game against our best receiver is not the place for that. And to get up and begin celebrating seems inappropriate, certainly no teammates on the sidelines were jumping up and down because of how awesome the hit was. I haven't seen the replay of the hit, I didn't know one existed, I'd appreciate a link if you have one. But it didn't look legal live, and the coaches on the sidelines didn't think so either. As jvk has mentioned, even Bohl came out and said it was targeting.

I'll enjoy smart, tough cowboy defense in the fall. I don't think you would tell me to stop complaining if gentry came out seriously injured, our receiving group is already thin enough.

As we have spoken about on our radio show this week...Scott Nulph's description of the play in his newspaper account was one of the most egregious examples of irresponsible journalism you will ever see. For the person who read that and did not attend the game (such as many here) Nulph's comments lead one to conclude that the Pokes have a reckless and head-hunting Safety parading around their defensive backfield.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Pownell's hit was as good a hit as I've ever seen. Hold the sauce by the way on not exerting yourself in a spring game...if you believe that you can simply tell a player to leave his instinctive & competitive juices on the sidelines then I'll conclude you have never been involved in high level competitive sports before.

Bravo to Pownell for his aggressive and punishing play - we need that.

Lastly, Pownell is on Wyoming Sports Talk Today this coming Thursday at 4P...

I was standing on the Brown sideline at the time Pownell made the hit. The Brown sideline was more than fired up and excited.

He never led with his helmet. Coach Bohl was wrong about this and has already stated to Pownell that the hit was clean and legal.
