Interesting read. Vorel has a good write-up as well.

"2. There is a pervading opinion that “good enough is good enough” in football and basketball. Thus,
there is not a sense of urgency and accountability that accompanies programs with high expectations
for competitive success. "

I guess I still see the spending of 35 M$ plus on the report as foolish, except that maybe it provides one pretty valuable thing...ammunition from an independent third party that Sternberg and Burman can take to the trustees and scream for more athletic funding.

It's part of a necessary process for an entity as visible as UW. This provide supporting evidence for decisions that will be made by Sternberg and the BOT. Whether that comes in the form of making the case for additional funds from the state, or justifying personnel moves (Burman, DC, etc.), it demonstrates that we have completed a full evaluation and are not simply making decisions based on some individual opinions.

It was more informative than I thought it would be. DC's compensation comes out to almost $100k per game. I would say this $35k was far better spent than most of the halves of football I have witnessed this year.

I don't mind the 35k expense if this lights a fire under some asses. "Good enough is good enough" is not exceptable. We want championships goddammit!

Well if anyone can recognize mediocrity, it's Tyrone Willingham.

I do agree the culture of "good enough is good enough" is prevalent. We see that even on this message board. Lot's of people praying to be 6-6 and get to the Kraft Macaroni and Cheese Bowl. I'm not sure if putting recruits in a windowless van with video games helps the cause, however.

Couldn't agree more. It also may be the case that $35k was the cheapest form of this type of consultancy that was contracted. All the complaints to the tune of "$35K for what we already know... HURR DURR" are somewhat misdirected in my opinion. This is absolutely an independent means for the President to fall back on when he makes major decisions. And quite possibly the cheapest means to do so.

The real question to me is after Sternberg ruffles some feathers, whether or not it will amount to anything with the same intransient attitudes pervasive in state government that controls UW coffers. Getting mad at a new executive administrator for trying to change attitudes and not just rolling over and giving up and accepting mediocrity is unproductive thinking. Tom Burman is a nice guy from in-state but he hired the worst coach in the history of the University of Wyoming basketball program. Just for that, he needs to go. He also hired a coach that's 26-31 overall and just lost by three touchdowns to Texas State in year five of his regime. Good coaches don't do that.

EDIT: Well shit. I just looked up Tiller's record and he lost to a 4-7 Tulsa team 35-6 in 1995... what is it about Wyoming and coaches doing stupid things like taking a safety or kneeling with over two minutes to play in the half? It hurts being a Wyoming fan.

I think the 35k was well spent now the president has job accountability for everyone before these findings we all knew the situation about UW but the new president had only heard rumors and had nothing for accountability.

I was glad to see that nowhere in the report did it say "drop to FCS".

I didn't see where it said to put recruits in a windowless van. It said to keep them engaged with a scripted presentation or possibly video games rather than let them stare out the window for 2 hrs. Seems like a good suggestion to me, especially if you're not flying them into Laramie Regional.

this.....i can imagine that to a lot of these city kids that drive from dia to laramie is a bit unnerving the first time

they probably expect to start hearing banjos start playing at any time

Maybe because south of Laramie sucks nuts.
It's so colorful and nice in Colorado then you cross the border and it is just yellow. It looks awful.
If I was a recruit who picked Wyo over CSU, and when I was coming into Laramie to move, and drove up 287, and saw Laramie, my future home, I would probably be like...fuck. I screwed up.
Why can't we make Laramie nicer?

They are doing beautification projects all over campus and plans are in place to make grand nicer but it certainly is a process.

Imagine the tailgate we could have had if they would have just given me the $35K and solicited us for our opinions. We could have told them the same thing. WYO1016's tailgate cruiser could have been painted the appropriate brown and gold so he wouldn't be rolling around in a royal blue van.

Heard exactly that from a player's wife before

I told you bastards, it's still a work in progress! Got the fabric to re-cover the seats this winter. Chinook will be making one last trek over the hill for the Fresno game this weekend. By the time the Hawaii game rolls around it will be too nasty on the pass to bring that beast over.
