South Dakota Coyotes @ Wyoming

Some info on the South Dakota Coyotes:

This season is South Dakota's first as a full member of Division I college basketball. They finished the four year transition from Division II at the end of last year.

South Dakota was picked 8th out of the 9 team Summit League by the media in the preseason poll. Their season opener was last night, when they lost to Southern to open the Global Sports Hoops Showcase. Like the Cowboys, they played a couple of games against Canadian Universities this summer, winning both games easily.

The player to watch is #5 Juevol Myles. He is a senior PG who started his collegiate career at Tallahassee CC before moving to Kansas State and eventually transferring to South Dakota. He is a score first PG and is a threat to explode offensively on any given night. Gilmore will have his hands full all night guarding this guy. He did not have a good game against Southern, so I expect him to be looking to make a statement against the Pokes.

7PM MST - Wyoming (2-0) and South Dakota (0-1)

The atmosphere will be tense at Arena-Auditorium on Thursday as South Dakota travels to meet Wyoming in a bout of epic proportions. The first whistle blows at 9:00 EST. The Cowboys stand at 2-0 overall. Meanwhile, the Coyotes have a record of 0-1. Last year the Cowboys beat the Coyotes 67-56. Over four years, Wyoming has gone 2-1 against South Dakota, and 2-0 at home.

On this day 7 years ago - Nov 15, 2005
Justin Williams achieved an uncommon feat by pulling down 20 rebounds in a 87-78 win against Charlotte. During the 2005-2006 season, Justin led Wyoming in rebounds 21 times.

I gotta say I am impressed with Grabau.
I remember getting him thinking "hell yeah great grab by shyatt".
Then as little as he played last season, I was thinkin maybe he was a miss.
Then as we get superstar Josh Adams, I am thinkin that grabau wasn't going to play much.
But Grabau is still getting it done. Good for him. Keep proving me wrong!

Current guys on the court.
Washington Sr.
Grabau Soph
Adams FR
McMannanem FR
Haldorson FR

Look at the inexperience, but playing very well. I know its South Dakota, but still.

We are finally clicking!!!! haha I mean it's only 3 games in and we are clicking... I shouldn't say finally. I should say already...

I shouldnt post this, cuz I know the moment I do, south dakota will go on a big run...

Our Hoops team has as many wins as our football team!!!!!
Nance with 12 and 6. Solid, solid.
Washington with 17-11. Animal!
Anyone else besides me think that he can challenge Moser and Franklin for MWC player of the year?
Grabau with 6 dimes!!! Whooo!!
Oh and that uhh martinez hit a couple 3s I guess.... only 7 of them!

Great start by a young team!

..but let's not forget that EVERY team we have playd thus far was Division 2 a few short seasons ago

I only mention this to temper some of the unreal expectations of this team. What Schyatt is doing is almost a miracle considering the lengths Schroyer went to dismantle the program.

lol Everyone knows we aren't going to beat Indiana right now after playing 3 easy teams.
Speaking of Indiana, They are #1 in the country right now. McClain could find himself in a situation very similar to Coach Shyatt in the next few years if they win the national championship.
Decent resume as a head coach, assistant at a national powerhouse, then getting a good gig head coaching again.

I think we have a great team for now, I'm not going to try to put us on the winning the MWC pedestal but I'm very pleased with this team and I think it will be a solid Basketball season and can't wait for televised games!

McClain always seemed like a solid coach I really don't understand how he went so far downhill to this day.

I was always frustrated by the tendency of his teams to play undisciplined, especially on offense. We were annually at the bottom of the MWC in A:TO ratio near the end of his tenure it's hard to overcome a large number of wasted possessions.

However, looking back on it, what really hurt McClain (because obviously he didn't forget how to coach between 2002 when he beat Gonzaga and 2004 when we finished in last place and never recovered) was the recruiting efforts during the successful seasons. During a time period when we should have been recruiting at our highest level (AA was full, team was winning, etc.) McClain brought in his weakest classes. His 2002 class was Mikel Watson and Jarrod Boswell....exactly. He had several weak classes in a row right during out peak. The only bright spot was 2001 when he brought in Straight and Richardson (not bad, being able to sign a complete starting backcourt that would be part of a conference title and NCAA tourney victory). I felt like his recruiting improved near the end of his tenure, but Schroyer wasted the talent he assembled.

Agreed. Just doing what needs to be done. This is the type of consistent defensive performance I expect from the Pokes.

Washington is a man among boys in these types of games. 17 and 11 in only 26 minutes I believe. He is going to have a great year as long as the guards remember to get him the ball. He is our most efficient offensive weapon. Use him to initiate the offense and work off the double teams that he will be able to draw.

Riley still has no turnovers this year, very impressive!

My favorite thing about tonight was that we had some foul trouble in the first half and had 3 true freshman and 2 sophomores on the court. That means we have depth, talent, and the coaches trust them to a certain extent! Very exciting, and a much better performance tonight as a team.

We needed a good backup to take over for Gillmore in this game because Gillmore had an off night. Grabau might not be the flashiest player out there, but he gets it done - and still has ZERO turnovers this season.
I agree Washington & Nance need to get the ball down low more often, but right now the opposition is double & triple teaming them. If our outside shooting stays hot, I expect the double & triple teaming down low to stop. This is the balance we have needed on offense.
One other thing I saw last night, Washington's stamina is not where it needs to be when we hit conference. He plays all out and he ran out of steam in the second half.
