Some comments about Mac from CU interests

In reading about the Bzdelik saga now being played out in CU and Wake Forest ran across some, what I thought, were interesting comments from Bzdelik's meeting with his players.

"But as the CU men`s basketball head coach drove away from a meeting with the Buffs Sunday afternoon the moment felt like an awkward farewell."

"The group that filed out of McClain`s front door included two-time All-Big 12 guard Cory Higgins, Bzdelik`s first CU recruit, and reigning Big 12 freshman of the year Alec Burks."

" 'I`m going to stay with McClain," Burks said. "If McClain isn`t here, I don`t know. It`s still all up in the air right now. I`m just going to go about my business until all this is final.' "

" 'We`re a strong team and the coaching staff that is here ... I want to stick with them," Tomlinson said. "They`ve been through it with all of us and they`re a really strong group. McClain is a great coach, and we all want him. As long as we all stay together, that`s the best thing.' "

And a couple of comments from fans' comments on the article:

"Mike Bohn, whoever COULD replace Bzdelik, you should have heard loud and clear from one of the strongest young teams in the country who they would like. Don't screw another hire up again."

and

"Will not be unhappy with McLain as well. Buffs played hard for him in Hawaii and he has a NCAA tournament win. One more than B has and he did recruit well to Wyoming. No small feat."

I'll reserve my comments about McClain. He shot himself in the foot at Wyoming. If he can do better at CU, more power to him.

But here's my thought. Let's say that CU doesn't hire McClain. Who does that leave them with? In my mind, Boyle at UNC has got to be a top candidate. Yeah, it's a big jump from UNC to CU, but the guy has proven he can coach, and he's got the local connection to the area and the recruits. May mean that we miss out on Boyle should a change be made next year. Just a thought, but I think there were many here who would like to see Boyle at UW.

GO POKES!

I hope Mac does get the chance to coach again and prove that he is a good coach. As far as our situation, who ever we hire next (and I am confident Heath won't last) needs to be a proven winner on atleast some level, unlike the status quo. I too would like to see Boyle, but either way there are other options. I'm still perplexed as why a move wasn't made after the last three seasons, but we will survive although I've seen enough to make up my mind.

Because we went 19-13 last year. And Heath did win the Big Sky title in only 3 years, but maybe a Big Sky coach isn't what we need.

Schroyer's 19 win season was a joke. He still had a losing record in conference (the same record that got mac fired) and played the weakest out of conference schedule. Playing Howard, Johnson & Wales, praire view A&M, Cal state bakersfield, western state, and houston baptist doesn't make a 19 win season a quality season. Point being shcroyer has done nothing at uw do deserve another year. Next year will be a shitty year and then we will be able to hire a new coach. I just hope our new coach is able to make us a winner.

Buckymac sucks. Maybe not as much as Heathbar...but still. Buckymac should have been fired when he was...period. He was a turd in a punchbowl at UW after his shit-storm job hunting, academics, and poor on court performance for 4 years straight.

At least when BuckyMac went job hunting he had something on his resume.
How about Heath having his buddy who runs a search firm getting Toledo to ask for permission to talk to him at Heath's request because Heath wanted to make people in Wyoming think someone would actually want him. When he finds out he pisses everybody off he acts surprised that toledo had interest

Its also sad that Bucky Mac was the most successful coach at Wyoming since paul Roach and Brandenburg. Kinda depressing if you truly think about it.

So true. Much different scenario. Makes one actually think further...who really is the better coach. From the current standpoint of UW basketball, I think that is easy to answer right now. Hopefully next year, we will all feel different.

I don't know if I would go that far. You are painting athletics with a pretty broad brush. As far as revenue sports though, BM wasn't as successful as Dees IMO (I know Dees inherited thunder in a bottle) and then he lost control of the program. I don't feel he was as successful as Dimel or Tiller either...but others very well may.

Shyatt could have been, and he could have probably built something pretty special here. Who knows.

Ya maybe i could believe Tiller, He never won a conference championship or maybe a co championship if I remember correctly, but he had some great teams. He also had to play in the supersize version of the Wac so it may have been a little harder to win one. Dees took a great team, and lost in the first round, no way was he as good.

As for the rest of our success the last several decades WNIT was great to be apart of but its the WNIt. The womens NCAA berth should count as more, atleast we made it to the tournment. Add 2 Bowl games that were awesome, but honestly I would trade everyone of them for a conference championship.

I think sometimes we take for granted how good those early 2000's teams were. The facts are that with a second round NCAA finish, 157-115 record, and 2 conference championships Mcclain was the third best BBall coach At wyoming the others being Shelton and Brandenburg.(both who are in a different league then Bucky)

I think that a better description would be "3rd most accomplished", although I would argue 4th behind Shelton, Brandenburg, and Witte (134-51 during his tenure).

I think Shyatt was a much better coach, but obviously his accomplishments are limited to one season (what a huge impact he had in one season though).

In regards to the revenue sports overall I think I would put Tiller (one WAC co-champ and a Top 25 in a different season) at least on par with McClain, but everyone else (Glenn, Koenning, Dimel, Schroyer, Wright, Dees) over that time frame achieved far less than McClain.

It's sometimes difficult to compare across sports. While it is true that McClain has coached us to our only two MWC titles in any sport since the MWC was formed, he had far greater resources than what is given to someone like Tom Johnson (having both the Men and Women in the top 3 of the league with the joke we have for aquatic facilities is truly a feat). The fact that we haven't won a conference title in any other sport is evidence of just how poorly managed our athletic department currently is and a big reason why our standing will be damaged significantly over the next 2 to 3 years as our historical rivals move on to bigger and better leagues while we will be left to try to extract an invite to any FBS league that will have us and our underachieving athletic program...thanks Mr. Burman!

Our only realistic chance to make a positive contribution to the league as a whole is Men's Basketball and we have made monumental errors that have destroyed the program. In a few years when we are in whatever crappy league we are in people will try to blame our population, climate, Lee Moon, Vic Koenning, and Dana Dimel but don't underestimate the damage done by destroying the one asset we had (much of the damage falls on Barta as well as Burman for the record).

Looks Boyle got the job

Disappointing for us obviously as I had hoped he might be a candidate next year for UW. Very disappointing to long time CU fans as well although I think they ended up with a very good coach (imagine Wyoming hiring Ben Stratton to be the head football coach someday, I don't think it would go over very well).

Agreed. I was hoping the Buckster would get the job. I think Boyle is a diamond...his kids played and never quit.

Called it! I just didn't see McClain getting that job. One other thing the man can do is spin the PR machine. Must pay to have a top-level ESPN reporter as a friend!

So now that Boyle is out of the picture for at least a few years, who does that leave on the short list after Schroyer tanks this next season?

GO POKES!

Dunlap, probably no shot. Dave Rice, who I think has good potential that has coached under some great coaches.
