Smith not invited to combine

This is devastating news for him. Many QB scout lists don't list him in the top 10. Coming out appears to be a colossal mistake. Wish he would have been smarter and not hired an agent. He might go in late rounds, but it's looking like free agency. When you don't make the combine as a QB, it means nobody is interested. If anyone WAS interested, a GM would make a call and get him to Indy.

Is the number one pro prospect invited to the combine? Or is he so well known and scouted that they don't need to look at him? They already know everything about him. Is Smith in this category?

He was being scouted throughout last season by several NFL teams. I have no idea if those teams were rating him high or low, but I'm sure they know all they need to know about him. We will find out before too long.

If that is true, then why is Johnny Football invited? Why is Bridgewater? Listen - the combine is a place for scouts and GMs to see the top prospects side by side to assess their base football skills. Smith didn't play in the Senior Bowl or other post-season bowl where scouts go to see players against top competition. He's not going to the combine. 19 other QBs were invited. Too early to tell. He could end up being a 3rd round pick and be a multi-millionaire in 1 year from now.

i think 3rd round ick just became a pipe dream. He'll be lucky to be picked at all. He got very bad advice.

Average contract for a 3rd-7th round pick is less than $600,000/year. So well off? Certainly. Multi-millionaire...no.

Whatever happens to him I really wanted him to stay for a 4th year and play under a different offense. And then a bunch of other stuff but I don't wanna say it now.
I want to watch him in the NFL too. And then a bunch more thoughts on making them see "YOU".

I looked back to see if any recent combine snubs turned out okay at the next level. It doesn't look good, especially at the quarterback position.

Some NFL scouts have described him overrated.

Personally, I think he has footwork issues and lacks high end velocity on his throws. He is a fierce competitor, athletic, and adequate arm strength. His accuracy is suspect especially when he can't set his feet.

I'm guessing very late to undrafted, now.

I really really like Smith and wish he would have stayed; this is just my evaluation of his draft potential.

I still believe this speculation about bad advice is premature. The thing that nobody is considering is that one more blow to the head in the college game and his football career was over.

100% yes.

Spread QBs have a negative track record in the NFL. Learning a new system and having success would've really helped him out. I wouldn't be surprised to see Brock Jensen drafted ahead of Brett because of this.

To paraphrase a writer whose name I already forgot:
Brett Smith has opted to skip his senior season under a new coach and a pro style offense that isn't his style to enter the draft to play under a new coach and a pro style offense that isn't his style.

I still bet he turns into a Kaepernick style setup, He will go late to a team that doesn't need a QB now but will in 2-4 years. He has better size and speed over the top 5 QB's in this years draft.

Manziel - 40 Low: 4.34 40 Time: 4.45 40 High: 4.56 - Height: 6-0 Weight: 210
Bidgewater - 40 Low: 4.56 40 Time: 4.67 40 High: 4.78 - Height: 6-2 Weight: 205
Bortles - 40 Low: 4.67 40 Time: 4.78 40 High: 4.90 - Height: 6-3 Weight: 230
McCarron - 40 Low: 4.74 40 Time: 4.84 40 High: 4.95 - Height: 6-3 Weight: 214
Carr - 40 Low: 4.68 40 Time: 4.78 40 High: 4.89 - Height: 6-2 Weight: 215
Fales - 40 Low: 4.82 40 Time: 4.93 40 High: 5.05 - Height: 6-2 Weight: 220
Smith - 40 Low: 4.72 40 Time: 4.83 40 High: 4.94 - Height: 6-2 Weight: 206 ( Pretty sure those 40 speeds are off )

So that list is basically the NFL Draft for QB's sure there are some others that might get picked up but those guys imo have the biggest chance to land on a team and not a practice squad.

If I'm looking to pickup a QB I'm going to stay clear of Manziel because of his size alone, I mean let's be honest wasn't there a QB a few years back that was the same size and is still a backup today? So I'm sure someone will take Manziel in the 1st round but w/e not where I would be looking.

4 QB's 6-2 and 2 6-3, I'm not sure why you would take a 6-0 QB with all of those better options up there but I thnk everyone there will be a starter or backup somewhere after the draft. There are flat out 4 teams that need starting QB's right now.

It sucks that he isn't going to the combine I think he could have gained a lot of draft stock there but I still think he will find an NFL Roster. Yes I left some QB's off the list like Tajh Boyd whose stock plummeted after that awful Senior Bowl.
