Smith have a rough camp?

I was trying to catch up on the Bucs camp. Sounds like Herron did pretty good, but sounded rough for Brett. Anyone in the Tampa Area with more info? Smith will find out today if he made training camp.

Undrafted free agent quarterback Brett Smith struggled to complete deep passes in the one-on-one session. He missed a wide open throw to speedy California running back Brendan Bigelow on an angle route out of the backfield. Smith settled in towards the end of the session, completing a beautifully thrown back-shoulder pass to Boise State wide receiver Aaron Burks. Offensive coordinator praised both Smith and Burks after the play.

Quarterback Brett Smith looked terrific in the 7-on-7 drill, which was the final session of the day. He completed 18 of his 22 attempted passes for the session, and two of the passes were catchable balls that were dropped. Robert Herron, who was running an out route, couldn’t hang on to a very catchable pass, ending Smith’s streak of 8 consecutive completions during the session.

Later on, Smith threw a gorgeous deep pass to running back Charles Sims, who was running a wheel route. The ball dropped right over Sims’ shoulder and was perfectly in stride. He later threw another great wheel route to Oklahoma State running back Jeremy Smith.

From the sounds of it, the first day he was out of his element (no surprise there), but settled in the second day, making a fairly quick transition.

That was what I was wondering, too. That Joe Buc guy seems to not like Smith for whatever reason, but the other article said he did pretty dang good in the second day 7 on 7.

Undrafted rookie is a tough road to hoe. I hope he makes training camp. I'm cheering for the kid.

I was reading some tweets from Ben Allbright.. he said three of the guys at camp said Brett looked good.. then he said three of the guys who were not at camp said Brett looked bad. So I guess take it with a grain of salt?

I think he did fine from what I was reading. I saw what albright was saying about differing opinions and buc fans told him to read Greg Auman for Buc insight. According to him Brett looked pretty good. Apparently Joebucsfan wanted them to draft a QB so he isn't happy with Brett and is apparently biased against him.(or something Im not paying that close attention but just what I noticed)

As an UFA I would say descent is a fine word to get from a coach, I doubt any coach is going to say a UFA was great or amazing or awesome. From what I have read they tend to keep it to a minimum when talking about those those players anyway.

Kind of an interesting storyline developing here. First, pewterplank said this about him:

He reportedly struggled in his first day at rookie minicamp, but was near perfect the following day. The upside for Smith is interesting — he can make plays with both his arm and legs and he is still only 21... Smith will be on a Bucs roster one way or another this year as they keep track of his progress but whether that is the 53-man roster or the practice squad remains to be seen.

However the article "Why the Bucs must keep Brett Smith" points this out:

But with the considerable depth the Bucs have acquired this off-season, and with all of the money they paid Josh McCown, Tampa Bay may not want to carry three QB’s on their active roster. That would mean that Smith would be cut and then have to clear waivers in order to be resigned to the Bucs practice squad. The problem with that plan is that there are several other NFL clubs that could benefit from Smith’s services and he likely wouldn’t clear the waiver wire, thus the Bucs would lose him completely.

Lovie Smith isn't a fan of 3 QBs on the roster, but the point about clearing the waivers is a good one. If I'm the Bucs, I wouldn't risk it. I'd make him part of the 53-man roster.

Alex Tanney, Mike Kafka and Brett Smith will be competing for the third spot at QB on the Tampa Roster. Alex Tanney was signed today.

Brett is really going to have to have a good camp in order to make the roster.
