SJSU game thread

Give Jr a little credit in this one. He adjusted the schem and made sure to umbrella Scudero with at least 2. That and sjsu injuries helped a lot. Their run game couldn't do anything and POKES D capitalized on making them 1 dimension.

The POKES O has to figure out how to score more with as much as they are moving the ball. I don't know that I've seen a qb like Anderson who sometimes can't hit the broad side of a barn and other times make throws that'd make guys on Sunday jealous. It's perplexing.

Take the win but you aren't getting a pick 6 and punt return to every weekend. Offense has to figure out how to finish once they hit the 35 yardline.

Yes on all points. The adjustment on defense made a difference. What got me was, why on earth did SJSU even attempt a pass in the second half after their QB1 went out? I’m sure their fans are calling for the OC’s head today. As far as our staff, I can’t say that there was a bad game plan or scheme prepared. The calls were there, player execution was not consistent…again. I’m not sold on Anderson, but Lord do I hope this was the shot in the arm he needed! The only knock I have after last night is, quit playing so many different guys on offense! That could be the problem when it comes to executing. It’s like he has complete line changes and our receivers and running backs can’t get into a groove. There should never be more than one or two snaps when certain guys aren’t on the field, not entire series’s. Shoot, at one point I thought Durr was injured, but it just wasn’t his series or two. That’s dumb. I loved the win though! Felt good to leave the War happy again!

Aside from the pooe clock management at end of half, wrong defensive scheme at first putting the POKES in a hole, and the offensive rotations, what else do you think the coaches botched? Not a snarky post; those are my big ones. Just wondering what others saw?

Wrong personnel for situations on offense, leaving a hurt Anderson in to throw an awful pick when Sims likely could have given the offense a spark with his legs, lack of over the top help with scudero until after he caught 4 TDs, same ol same old in lack of clock and situational awareness. Just a few - the players won despite the poor coaching.

There were about 3-4 other sure fire touchdowns where the secondary was beat due to poor scheme that should have been touchdowns if not for bad throws or drops.
 
BTW - we don’t win that game if SJSU doesn’t pull Eget for what appeared to be a minor injury. We got a huge break there. Then when SJSU finally put Eget back in, it was too late.

Regardless, I’ll take the win! Sawvel should be sending a thank you card SJSU’s way.
 
Can someone tell me what actually happened at the end of the first half? I don’t understand any of what I saw. A spike that wasn’t followed by a FG team coming out that never got a kick off. Looked like the keystone cops.

Meh, a lot of couch coaching. There's missed plays every game. I'm not convinced Sims is the savior everyone thinks. It's entirely possible Anderson is the best option on the roster

According to the radio guys, a spike, by rule, takes a minimum of 3 seconds off the clock. So a spike there ends the half.

Gave up another special teams touchdown. Gave up 4 TDs to one receiver before making an adjustment. Keeping an inaccurate immobile quarterback in the game who was obviously playing hurt. It was obvious that a mobile quarterback would have been an advantage. Stupid penalties. Horrible time management, especially at the end of the first half. Do I need to elaborate?
 
I guess just me but I didn't think coaching was too terrible after the 1st quarter or 1.5 quarters. Over 400 yds of O. Completely shut down run. Better job containing pass or least preventing scoring. Time management at end of 1st wasn't the best but that wasn't an easy situation either. Even getting in position to score is a change I like. No doubt we'd have run that out under Bohl.

I'm not a PBJ fan but Joser is better than their record. The O needs to finish but for all the problems, the ball is getting moved.

Anderson had a blitzer coming almost straight at him and he didn't see him. He got hit when he threw and thankfully, the pass fell incomplete. He can't see the rush, he can't feel the rush, and he's too slow to get away from the rush. He is absolutely the wrong guy with this offensive line. Last night was a fluke unlike anything I've ever seen. Maybe he is the best we've got. But lets see someone else before we keep throwing Anderson out there. This staff is willing to rotate backs and receivers on every play. And yet, Sawvel plays one qb no matter how ineffective he is. Strange.
 
Sounds like quite a game last night.

Saw the score this morning and was surprised. Then I saw the 21 unanswered points the Pokes scored in the 4th quarter and was VERY surprised. Then I watched the highlights and read through this thread, and it became clear that we got damn lucky.

Personally, this is worst case scenario for me. We won a game we should have lost. It gives fans, Burman, and leadership at UW just enough reason to think "Maybe this is the turning point. Maybe Sawvel has finally figured it out. Maybe Anderson is on the same page as his receivers. Maybe the offense can finally look like they know what they are doing".

Of course, none of this is true. We just got damn lucky. I’m happy for the players and they deserve to celebrate this win, but if this buys our coaching staff even the smallest amount of leeway, then it was a net loss.

I believe the rule is that a spike is not a legal play in college with less than 3 seconds.

The problem that I have is lack of situational awareness to call the prior play over the middle with the time remaining and no timeouts.

And once you go there with 2 seconds, you run out the field goal unit!?!? You should absolutely know it would be impossible to get the unit on the field and the ball snapped with 2 seconds. All you can do at that point is have the QB look to the end zone. Hell, call a fake spike because maybe the defense bites.

But it is just the same garbage clock and situational awareness that we have seen from this staff for 2 years.

They also had two missed fgs. Likely win if one goes through.
