SI's Coaches on the Rise

Never thought of that, but Snyder isn't gonna retire anytime soon, cuz when he does like Paterno(football only) he will probably not last long after he's done coaching

I've heard KSU wants to keep things in house or at least someone with KSU ties, which would take him off the list.

Honestly, I don't believe there are many programs Bohl would leave here for. Nebraska would be an obvious possibility, but beyond that not much.

K-State will be an interesting story to follow. Bill Snyder wants them to hire his son who has never been an OC or DC. Could also be none other than Dana Dimel. But the reason they scare me with regards to Bohl, is the AD they hired this year was Bohl's boss at NDSU.

This right here. Ndsu administration down at k-state could be a selling factor.

Reality check time. Coach B going anywhere at his age is a stretch. Check Les Miles situation. Plus given the number of intangible items a coach dreams of are provided at Wyoming, and would be difficult in other situations.

Les Miles had one of the best jobs in football, coached in a premier conference, was making a ton of money, and had a giant recruiting budget so I guess I don't see the similarities.

And what are the intangible items Wyoming offers? Just curious

Don't get me wrong, I love Wyoming football and Coach Bohl. But college football is a tough business for schools like us

I think the 6.5 million dollar buyout this year will keep other schools away, at least for this year.

That's nothing for a big school. And most of the time that's just the start of a negotiation. The big school will pay $2 mill, Bohl might pay some himself, and they'll agree to play a game in Laramie. Mcelwain had a huge buyout at CSU and Florida did something like that.

Something to consider, Bill Synder's son is on the staff and wants him to be heir apparent. Something to consider that Gene Taylor won't even get the chance to name a new coach.

"My commitment is pretty entrenched," he said. "I mean, it’s not only a contract extension, but there’s pretty significant financial obligations that work both ways. So that’s a significant long-term commitment."

"I think the common mistake that coaches in a place like this (make), the approach they take is to get onto the next opportunity," Vigen said. "And Coach is all about this opportunity right here."

"With the exception of when I was young, because I was moving around as an assistant coach, I have a tendency to stay at a place a long, long time," Bohl said.

"I think the stamp that you leave on a program is much more than a record," Bohl said. "That takes time, and that takes emotionally investing."

"Our real focus is to, as we say, return Cowboy football to national prominence," Bohl said. "There was a time when the Cowboys really were one of the most recognized teams in the country, and while that may seem like a daunting task to other people, we believe we’re capable. But to do that, it’s just not a flash-in-the-pan deal. It’s a deal where you build, and that’s a significant amount of time. So it’s not a one-and-done type (thing). I know I’m certainly in this for the long haul, and I know our coaches are as well."

Intangibles...control over program, budget, support without excessive strings from boosters and school. To many FBS programs are run NOT by head coach. Easy translation, a lot of coaches prefer not to spend the bulk of their time playing politics. So many schools don't let their coaches coach in an environment that fosters success. From what I have seen in my short time in Laramie, Wyoming provides that environment.
