Shyatt says that the Cowboys have one scholly open

Coach Shyatt in his post game said that Wyoming has one scholarship open for the spring. This means that one guy on the team is not coming back above and beyond Vernon and it could be either Sellers or Hankerson, but my bet is Sellers. Who knows also if Hankerson will be back, I am counting on him coming back right now, but who knows, that is a big question mark and if he doesn't I think that will open up a 2nd scholarship for the spring I am thinking. As someone else pointed out on the other board that Coach Shyatt has to take ownership of the fact that he has recruited several players that are not going to be contributors in helping Wyoming win a MWC Championship. I have also read where Coach Shyatt is not the type to run players off, while I respect this and with that said I still think that Coach Shyatt needs to sit down with at least one player and maybe two and say, "look I appreciate all that you have done, but in all honesty I don't see any playing time for you in the future here, and maybe it is best that we try to find a spot where you can play and be a contributor."

Regardless, with the one open scholarship now I don't think that there is any question but Wyoming has to go after a big that would be a contributor next season, especially with Nance's situation uncertain and a wing that redshirted this year (McManamen) eligible. To go after another wing IMO doesn't make a lot of sense unless he is lightening in a bottle and can be counted on to be a consistent scorer. I feel that the big probably needs to come from the JC ranks.

As much as I appreciate the smarts of Grabau and his effort in my opinion I think that Wyoming could do much better with a point that has the ability to get open and make shots. Someone on the other board made the comment that Grabau is almost becoming a liability out there due to his lack of offense. While I am not there yet in totally agreeing with this statement, I must admit that I am not far from agreeing with it.

I have also read where people are talking about how Cooke will be a much improved player next season. This one just makes me shake my head, because we have heard the same thing for quite a while now. Cooke hasn't ever developed any type of offensive game and his improvement on the offensive end has been slight. I have given up thinking that there is an offensive game in him. The problem with Cooke is that he is inconsistent on the defensive end as sometimes he comes out and plays good defense and rebounds and other times you wouldn't even know that he is out on the floor. This has just put a hurt on the Cowboys several times this season. I appreciate loyalty as much as the next guy, but I would put the best guys out there that are going to give you a chance to win, and their class level be damned.

I do hope that Coach Shyatt frees up at least one more scholarship than the one he says is already freed up for the spring signing period. This team needs productive depth in the worst of ways, and having guys that are almost permanent residents on the bench eating up a scholarship isn't doing the kid or the program any good IMO.

We could all just mope, gripe, argue, piss, and moan all the way until football starts. That sounds fun.

It is fun or we wouldn't do it year after year after year after year after year after year.

Sounds like a great song, could you hum a few bars and I will see if I can pick it up? :)

I was surprised to hear him say that we have a scholarship open, too. My guess is that Hankerson is done, based on Shyatt saying in the post game that he dismissed him.

I think we're all in agreement that we need to go after a post player that can contribute immediately. The question is where are we going to find one? I would bet that it's going to have to be a 5th year transfer since all of the good/decent JUCO bigs have already signed.

hmmm, I think they'll do what they did with Leonard and run him thru a bunch of accountabilty issues to see if he wants to stay at UW, Hank can be a valuable asset to us if he really wants to, next year is going to be interesting, esp if Larry can't be 100%...time will tell, I just wonder if we had this game at the AA would it have been different....we'll never know!!

Coach Shyatt's comment about one additional scholarship made my ears perk up as well. I have been wishing that we had a spot to go find a serious big body JuCo. We need more muscle with a build like Waddell or Uche had. We did not have a contributor who tipped the scales at over 225#. Remember when Josh Davis was the skinny big man on the roster at 6'8" 230?

As for making more space, I think Coach has more integrity to preach about academics and then run a player off who has so many credits that he cannot transfer them to a new school and still graduate on time. Almost all schools will require that a student complete a minimum number of credits at that school in order to get a degree from that school. In my experience, UW's magic number was 65 credits (plus or minus) back in the mid-1990s.

This is relevant because a kid who is struggling to get playing time at U.W. is not going to make a living playing basketball so the degree had better be what matters at that stage.

I have seen a rumor elsewhere that Austin Haldorson might be looking to move on. If Sellers graduates, he might be thinking about what he is going to do next in life.

I've been following the JUCO championship tourney in Hutchinson, and there are several big men in that tourney avging big numbers. Including one or two avging double doubles. But, I don't know who is already looking at these guys.

We were over-signed before the Hankerson incident. So Shyatt was planning on somebody leaving already. Then with the Vernon announcement came up with an open scholarship. I would say that it is not Hankerson's scholarship that is available.
