Thanks for the MW championship and NCAA tourney appearance, coach! This fan base was starved for success and he brought it. Wish him the best moving forward.

Can't help but feel a little bit bitter. When he came back he said he was gonna get us back to the top and finish the job he started back in 98. I don't think he has done that yet. As someone said in another thread he did leave us in a much better spot than when he arrived and I appreciate it. I just wish he would give us a few more years. He is a great coach and an even better man and will be missed. If the staff remains together and brings us to even higher levels of success then Larry will be responsible for it. I wish nothing but the best for him in the future and he will always have a home among the pokes.

If Alan Edwards is the next coach, I am all in and excited to see what he can bring.

Im kinda all over the place in this post I realize but just expressing all the different feelings going on in my head.

I guess this all makes sense. He isn't leaving the cupboard bare, he didn't fill this year's recruits yet so the next guy could. He has some unfinished business to talk about with the MWC admin decisions, which he may not comment on since they already reversed their decision.

This may breath a little life into recruiting... We shall see.

Bottom line though, I love coach shyatt and this sucks. Gonna miss him at the helm.

Burman should have hired him instead of Schroyer. Then he would have had time to build a program and we could have saved 5 years of futility.

Thank you for everything you've done, Coach. You've built a program we can be proud of, and we will never forget that. Good luck to you!

hit me like a ton of bricks, ughhhhhhh, I feel sick(today), hoping for the best for him tho!!!!!! Burman get the right man!!!!!!!

Wyoming Announces Larry Shyatt to Step Aside as Head Coach

LARAMIE, Wyo. (March 21, 2016) – University of Wyoming Athletics Director Tom Burman announced Monday that Larry Shyatt has decided to step aside as head coach of the Cowboy basketball team. During his six seasons at the helm, Shyatt returned the Pokes to national prominence with renewed success on the court and in the classroom.

“We are extremely grateful to Coach Shyatt for what he has done for these past five seasons in building Wyoming basketball into a program Cowboy fans are proud of,” Burman said. “From leading his team to the Mountain West tournament championship and an NCAA berth last year, to the academic success of the young men who have played for him, he has built this program the right way. We thank him and his wife, Pam, for their years of service to the University of Wyoming, and we wish them all the best in the next phase of their lives.”

Shyatt leaves Wyoming as one of the most successful coaches in program history. He led the Cowboys to five postseason berths, including the NCAA Championships last March. That 2014-15 season included winning the Mountain West tournament title to secure the Pokes’ first appearance in the NCAA tournament since 2002. Under his direction, the Cowboys have eight wins over top-25 opponents, including three against top-10 foes, as he is the fastest coach ever to reach 100 wins at UW.

Individually, Shyatt coached eight Wyoming players to 18 all-conference honors, including a MW Player of the Year and two MW Defensive Players of the Year. He also recruited and coached Larry Nance Jr., who was picked 27thoverall in the first round of last year’s NBA draft by the Los Angeles Lakers. Shyatt finished with a 117-78 overall record in his six seasons at Wyoming.

In the classroom, Shyatt has helped the Pokes to a four-year average APR of 951, the highest mark in the program’s history, as a total of 15 players have earned their degrees since his return. Current Cowboys Josh Adams and Jason McManamen are also on track to graduate this spring. The team has earned above a 2.8 grade-point average each of the last six semesters.

This is extremely disappointing. I disagree with a lot of what Shyatt does, but he's a good coach that cared about Wyoming. Where does he go now?

Sounded like all 3 assistants interviewed for the job and they chose Allen. Not sure who interviewed them but I imagine SHyatt gave the blessing to all 3 of them and let Burman or a committee do the interview and hire but who knows.

Bummed that Shy has called it quits but happy what he did for the program. Honestly this could be the best thing for everyone involved. It's kinda sounding like he might go NBA bound? Whatever he decides to do more power to him. Thanks again coach Shyatt! Dude really impressed me on his return...wish it could've gone bigger and further but hey that's life.
