I don't think he's referring to a big. A player that hasn't played much this year that everyone thought should but we saw why he wasn't

Yeah, I know who he is talking about...but IMHO Id rather have a 6'4" guard/wing that needs help over a 6'10" division 2 player. Naughton is going to be a stud, we need another..., but maybe our 6'4" guard is too much of a "me" player for coach because he has way more upside than our big that needs to go.
Im not going to pretend to know why or why not coach recruits some kids and not others, but it does bother me that a disaster of a coach (the slick haired shyster) can get better talent into Laramie then a coach who is known to be one of the best in the land. I feel like he limits himself a little because of his high standards, there I said it. I could be way off, but I think coach is a little too "mr. nice guy/polite old school" when it comes to recruiting. We are not looking for a kid to marry our daughters. I think he could bring in a little better talent if he "toed the line" a little. Not scummy and dirtbag, but a little bit more "role the dice" type. Adams comes to mind, we just don't get enough of those kids.
And again (bringing out the Mclain quotes, lol), you can say winning will solve that, but the shyster didn't win and he still brought in more talent than our current coach. We really needed Bryce Peters....think about JJ, Peters and Mueller/Parker all on the court at the same time with Naughton down low and Conway/Lieberman at the point, while Thompson and Moemeka getting minutes off the bench in 2017. Thats a sweet sixteen or better squad...

Maybe our coaches are a little more into team chemistry than the coach you are referring to. UNLV is a good example of recruiting top players - but no team chemistry. In other words, Coach Shy doesn't just look at talent. There are some misses, but recruiting will never be a perfect science.

I don't really think that is true in regards to Shyatt's standards. I don't see our standards as different from most schools. We have recruited players that were academically questionable for D-1 who ended up not being able to go D-1 as a result (Turner, Hunte) and we have recruited players like Shakir Smith and Derek Cooke who have gotten into some trouble off the court. Not to mention guys whatever happened with Keonta Vernon, Diontae Jones, and Tyrell Williams.
I think that some people promote Shyatt in that fashion in order to excuse the sub par competitive performance (not you). If we want to excuse the competitive performance there is really only one justification but it's difficult for us to admit: maybe it's just too hard to recruit to UW.
rich22 said:Q: "What approach do you take in looking for the “right kid” at Wyoming as opposed to some of your previous stops like Clemson, Oregon and UCLA?
“It still comes down to who fits our system. We want to get the most well- rounded players that are the best talent we can get. We will be able to coach the rest.
“The right fit for Wyoming is guys like us, guys who are excited to be here. We have a plan and we want to execute the plan, and those guys have to be a part of it.
“It’s not about talking them into coming to Wyoming because Wyoming is a different landscape. It’s really the same fundamental whether you are at UCLA or Florida: You still have to want us as much as we want you.”
Q: How much has the college basketball recruiting game changed in the last 10 to 15 years and is it tougher now on so-called mid-major schools like Wyoming to get players?
“It’s probably actually tougher at the UCLAs and Floridas than it is at the Wyoming’s. We will approach recruiting at Wyoming like we did 13 years ago.
“Let’s face it, there weren’t a lot of takers for Josh Davis. So it is our job as a staff to uncover those hidden gems. Those are the kind of kids that we will build on here.
“With the contacts we have built over the years, we will be able to get a good combination of talent and character so that the program is self-fixing from year to year. We don’t want any quick fixes; we want to build a program.”
Q: How soon do you expect to announce players in this first Wyoming recruiting class?
“I would hope that would come sometime within the next 10 days or so. We want to get this thing done as fast as we can, but we don’t want to be harsh in any decision we make, and we don’t want to sign guys just to sign guys.
“We want to be sure that we get the right four guys, maybe the most important four guys that we will sign in terms of not making a mistake on their character, and not making a mistake on their passion for getting better as players.”
This is a quote taken from a boomerang article about Scott Duncan when the staff was hired. I think I remember Coach Shyatt saying similar things but adding that the first 2 or 3 recruiting classes would be focused on character and not as much on the athletics side of basketball. He always followed that up with telling us that when they took care of the image and character of the program then they would start taking more risks in recruiting because the foundation would be laid for the kids on what would be expected of them off the court. I think we have seen this happen with an up tick in the talent that shyatt is recruiting the last 2 years. I am not saying that the first two or three classes weren't talented because Larry Nance jr. and Josh were recruited in the first two classes.
I think the most important aspect that Shyatt looks for in a kid that they are recruiting is a desire to want to progress as a basketball player for four years. In our day and age its hard to find high recruits with that same desire. The recruits now want to get to the NBA quick and don't want to put in the time. I am not saying that we have missed on a bunch of one and done's but I would imagine that philosophy turns some kids off when they are told they might redshirt and they might not play meaningful minutes until their sophomore/junior year. I know Shyatt tells recuits to come and be a piece of something great. I don't think a lot of big time recruits like to be told to be a piece of something special because they and their parents think they are the main event.
I know this is a long post but I also don't agree with people saying our competitiveness has been sub par this year. I counted 6 losses by 6 points or less (5 wins as well) and 5 more losses at 10 points or less. I would say if you are within 6 at the end you could have won that game with a couple of different bounces/plays. If we win all of the 1-6 point losses this year and we still lose all of the 7-10 point games that leaves us with wins over Cal (rpi top 20), Houston (rpi 86), and sweeps over Nevada (rpi 116) and sweeps of Air Force and Montana State. I think this team has great competitiveness and is only getting better. They have had bad games (see Montana state) but they have been really fun to watch and very competitive all year. :twocents:

With Naughton and Barnes getting another year of experience, Herndon and Dalton gaining a few pounds and becoming more comfortable with their roles, as well as Moemeka coming off his redshirt... I feel like getting a big in 2016 might cause a perceived log jam and scare away Hunter from staying close to home. Other 2017 targets Parker Stewart and Avea seem like pure shooters, so I wouldn't mind seeing the staff look for another true PG. Besides Lieberman and Conway there's not much else. And if your wishes to never let Lieberman on the court become true, that PG spot becomes even more thin...LanderPoke said:Not a guard. We have enough guards. The only thing that really worries me about our current crop of bigs is that no one outside of Naughton shows any aggressiveness in the post. Barnes is way too passive, Herndon and Dalton don't have the bulk. While Herndon did gain a little during the last off season, he doesn't have the big banger mentality needed to play inside. Dalton, while more aggressive, is rail thin and I don't see that changing drastically during the upcoming off season.
We have plenty of scorers on this team and on the teams to come with the projected returners and players coming off of the redshirt year. We need someone that takes the role of protecting/owing the paint. I really want to see another Justin Williams on this team.
Why would he stay away from a Justin Williams?WyoExpat said:PokeTransplant said:cali2wyo said:I'm scared getting another big might hurt our chances with landing Hunter Thompson next year though. I suspect that Justin Williams is the perfect example of exactly the kind of player that Coach Shyatt will stay away from.
I also suspect that Coach Shyatt does consider the kind of character that one might be comfortable with as a date for one's daughter. (He, of course, has no daughters.)
One possibility that we have not seen here is a grad student transfer. The right guy could instantly inject maturity and help balance classes at the same time. We will not even know which players are available and interested in going the grad transfer route until much later.

Shroyers recruiting ability is getting overblown with time. He brought in good athletes, but nobody that was stick around types and nobody Wyoming fans will remember in another 10 years. If you even remember them now
