Sawful postgame

He was asked if he felt his job was in jeopardy and he said he doesn’t make that decision but acknowledged he could resign.

He discussed losing too many winnable games and being poor offensively.

He said he felt he had done a really good job of rebuilding into a good defensive team but acknowledged the offense has been a poor performer admitting it’s been that way for a few years.

He stated “This is 2025. We’ve got to be able to score points.” “I’ve never been this frustrated, and it’s not frustrated with the players. It’s not frustrated with anybody associated with the team, it’s just frustrated that we’ve not been able to figure out how to get production.

Fan suggestion to Sawful - go find a real staff of offensive coaches, tell them to focus recruiting efforts on getting players who can make plays and then get out of the way.

Unfortunately I am left feeling like the offensive problems are not going to be solved in the next couple of years and maybe longer since we have a head job coach who admits he is unable to identify the problem with fielding a team that plays offense at even a level slightly above mediocre.

I think he knows what the problem is, he just can’t say it publicly. It’s blatantly obvious our quarterback play is the key component to why the offense stinks. When an entire stadium, most of which had probably consumed a lot of adult beverages can see a wide receiver wide open, even yell throw it while the play is happening, and the quarterback doesn’t see it, there’s the answer. While I don’t think Sawvel is the best head coach we could get, he’s most likely not going to get fired. Unfortunately, I don’t think we have the money to buy him out. He’s going to have to go get an offensive coordinator that has been successful. Or, at the very least a quarterback coach that can recruit. My guess is, Jay Johnson is gone, Jovon goes back to coaching receivers and he hires a new OC. I think he’s got to take a hard look at O-line coaching too.

Rebuilt the D? Can someone back that up for him? They took a solid d and tanked it year 1. They made it adequate in year 2 but luckily had a lot of really terrible offenses on the schedule to inflate the rankings.
Yeah. This D is hardly the steel curtain. Air Force had 3 points at home yesterday. We held them to 24. As it turns out, that wasn't much of an achievement. They've only scored more than 20 in one game since they played us.
We gave up 222 yards rushing yesterday. We had 77 yards rushing. Anderson threw 39 times and our yards passing was 152. We average fewer yards per pass attempt than most teams average rushing.
This entire program is a mess. We beat 2 garbage teams to start the year and we're 2-7 since. No Boise state game. Not one team that was anything close to a top 20 program other than Utah. We're one of the few teams that actually lost to CU - and they pounded us. Sawvel was gifted as easy a schedule as we've had in decades and we had one decisive conference win - against a team that fired their coach mid week.

Burman isn't going to do anything until the stands empty and all that game day revenue starts to dry up. So Buckle up guys. We've got at least one more year of Vic, the sequel, to get through.

100%.
Last year, we returned what on paper looked like it could be one of the best defenses Wyoming ever had. And he turned it to garbage. This year, I agree the defense was impressive (until the Nevada game when we got pushed around).

Sawful will earn $1.1 million in 2026, and $1.25 million in 2027 and '28.

The buyout is 80 percent through the first three years of the deal and 70 percent for the final two years.

It would cost $2.63 million to terminate him next Sunday.

The question Burman needs to answer is whether staying with him for the remaining $3.6 million from 2026-28 is worth it considering how much revenue may be lost. I am guessing Burman will consider that Wyoming fans continue to blindly have allegiance and the tradition of waiting until next year. Suffer through 2026 and the buyout goes to $1.75 million but will cost $1.1 million and a further burying of the program in the doldrums.

My guess is nothing changes and if Sawful finds a way to get to 6 wins by 2027 he will get extended. First chance to terminate him will be after 2027 when the buyout drops to $875,000 and Wyoming is beaten by UTEP 77-0 on homecoming.

Wyoming is officially ranked 129th nationally in scoring offense. That’s worth $1.1 million in 2026…🤣

If he’s the coach I’m not getting season tickets

Hard to predict but sticking with Sawful will indeed result in loss of revenue. Even the most faithful will be reluctant to sit in the wind and cold to watch Wyoming football next year. It’s pretty obvious, even to the casual observer, that this team will continue to be bad under the current leadership. Need proof? Check out the AA on game day. Eventually, fans get wise and stop spending money.

Not true. If he is fired early, he collects the full salary. His contract was fully guaranteed. The ‘buyout’ provisions you reference are if he leaves early to take a different job what would be owed to Wyoming (too bad no school is dumb enough to hire him away).

Ouch. That sucks dog 🌭. I thought it was the case but did a quick look at the story on FootballScoop which didn’t clarify the nasty part. Thanks for the depressing correction.

It’s awful. Any other athletic director does something like that (they are fired). At Wyoming, the AD gets a hush hush raise and extension.

Unless this program find a quarterback it will be more of the same. It either can’t identify talent or ruins it once it gets here.

Why we offered a 5 year deal is the biggest head scratcher of all. An unproven head coach? Dumb. All Burman had to do was a search, where he could have actually given Polasek a chance. Too bad Bohl was still running the program, even after his retirement. Shoot, I’d argue he’s still micromanaging things at a distance. On what other field would you see a former coach roaming the sidelines time and time again? Sawvel needed to tell him a year ago to go sit in the stands or a box, and let the players see him as The Coach. Just another indication he’s not confident. There will undoubtedly be a drop in attendance and revenue next season. And I’m sure we will lose some to the portal that are key players. There will come a point when Burman will have to make a decision on whether or not we can afford not to fire. Unless some team out there needs a defensive coordinator and Jay jumps on his own. Deep down, that’s the best case scenario I hope for.

Ironically the base and guarantee is the financial killer for UW. Failure to meet a measured success is never applied in a reduced income method.

$300,000 base - ok with that.
$800,000 guarantee - how about 100% at 6+ wins with the additional incentives for various outcomes. Win 5 or less games and drop to a 90% guarantee. In addition, have a clause that upon 2 consecutive losing seasons the guarantee drops on the entire remaining contract to 50% with a losing record.

The key is the buyout. Base the termination the same as the buyout. So what if a coach does great and is hired away after 3 years. In a scenario like that for Sawful’s contract we would still get over a $1 million buyout but only have to pay $1 million if we terminated him in year 3.

Wyoming is very unlikely to hire the next best up and coming OC from a P4 team since they are already exceeding the Wyoming contract limits so be prepared to pursue the next best option. The coaching pool Wyoming will be hiring from will respond to these terms if given the resources to hire quality assistants and enough nil to recruit better than the leftovers nobody else is pursuing.

Sadly, Sawful will probably get a ticket revenue bonus this year because of Josh Allen day sales while considering his QB roster perfect as it stands today.
