the answer to this, imo is, UW needs to decide if it wants to be a football or basketball school and pool more resources in that pool, ie if we pick basketball, create a culture, make the top 25 more often than not then the teams and recruits should come

Please god, not this again.

I like you stymeman, but UW needs to decide to be competitive (PERIOD) in everything, and get going. And that starts with our "CSewe Ram Through & Through" President, Whorey Laurie Nichols, and our "Do More With Less" AD Spermin' Tom Burman.

Heard she addressed some legislators in Laramie on Saturday. A lot of references to "your State" and "your University". Hmmmmm, no "our"?!

If true...ugh...are we in for a massive learning curve.

From a students perspective.. Honestly, most students don't evne know when the games are. We have an information-overload problem.

We get 5-10 emails from UW a day, so they get instantly deleted, the UW Athletic Posters are so commonplace that noone takes time to look at them. Social Media only works if you're already interested in that content. As far as I know the only game-day specific ads I've seen are those cheap, trashy white Tri-Fold boards around campus.. Often times they're not updated. I saw a CSU one just today...

If you want to get students out, you need to get them where they are. Have a larger presence in the Union, Half Acre, Classroom Building, the Residence Halls. You can't expect them to just show up because it's occurring.

If I hadn't put all the M & W home games in my calendar when the season started, I probably wouldn't have known there was even a game going on. Not everyone goes to the Athletics Website.

That's just my :twocents:, though.
Thanks for this perspective purp! Good to know things happening on campus. Still there just isn't that same fire in the students as past. Not sure how many seats there are for you guys know but it would be a good 1/8 to 1/4 of the building in students back in the day??
That could be some fuzzy   :puke: math... They got loud too and we said all kinds of crazy shit which you probably would get policed on these days  not saying it was all right but it was right at the time if that makes sense

Really the shit that drives me crazy coming to games is that we're expected to be subdued. I remember very vividly last year students who were removed from the game by LPD/UWPD for standing, and refusing to sit down. I've heard people say some funny shit, and be asked to stop by game management.

My suggestion? Make the student section uncomfortable to sit in, force us to stand. If we're sitting, we're more likely to be on our phones facebooking, engaging in things other than the game. Take a look at the seated student section one day and check out how many folks are on their phones...

I do my best to stay off the 'ol iPhone when I'm at games, but that can't be said for all of the students. But seriously... Athletics needs to give us a reason to be excited about games. The excitement of a MWC Championship really has worn off...

It's because it was a tourney championship, not a MWC championship, big difference.

A very big difference. Plus we laid an egg in the NCAA Tournament which didn't help either.

Plus we've laid a number of eggs since... Say what you want, losing to Fort Lewis really hurt any MWC Championship momentum we had coming into this season

Losing your exhibition game to a DII Colorado school never helps!

yup.yup and yup. We need to not lose to crap competition and we need a string of top three finishes to bring the crowds back.

I agree, you should never lose to a D2 school. Having said that, it makes it a tiny bit easier to swallow when you know that Fort Lewis won the RMAC this year and is currently ranked #8 in D2.

One Issue I have noticed is the separation of the student section between those on the floor and those in the seats. Those on the floor are cheering and engaged but that doesn't get those above engaged. Before the remodel when the student section was all one if those at the bottom stood up then everyone had to standup for the most part which led to a larger group of students standing and cheering. So while I really think it is cool that the students can be right on the court I don't like the fact it seperates the student section into two groups and those that sit above the separation are less likely to stand and cheer.

Yeah but we lost to a DII school nobody gives a damned about.

I can't agree with this more. I sat in the first row of the seated section behind the fans, and man oh man what a difference. I don't feel as connected up there as I do when I get down there with some friends. I can't say I'd ever be the most rowdy of fans, which is why I typically sit up in the seats, but the atmosphere down there is certainly much better.

If the above student section doesn't stand and cheer that's their problem. Sometimes it takes extra effort from our team to get to those people and that's probably what needs to happen more. Too late now though...this season is toast and Vegas is the next season. Vegas Pokes fans are always good.

"Purp" thanks for the student perspective - hopefully someone from the Athletic Department and Marketing will read that. How involved are the players in the community? I've seen some charity photos here and there, just curious. Having the players connect with the local community more, might not be a bad investment. Soup kitchen, go to the high school games, anywhere that humans congregate when its 20 degrees outside.

How about we consolidate all the fans to one side of the building? And did the LPD really tell students to sit down??? Sad if they did. You would never see Kentucky PD or North Carolina PD telling the students to sit down - the adults that don't want to be around all the fun just need to sit in a different area. Students should be on both sides of the court by the hoops, screaming from both ends, getting in the heads of the opposing teams and supporting the Pokes. Make those two areas the hottest student ticket on campus coupled with my thoughts below about a drink and popcorn - something and they'll show up.

Lastly, we should sell season tickets next year for $99 for ALL home games. That would be like $7 a game, include a drink and popcorn - kids like to be entertained and fed and if we give them something to do with refreshments they might show up. And the faculty, why not. Oh and lets win 20 games next year, that'll help to.

They were all over that shit last year, they've gotten a lot better this year. I saw they had signs in the student section alerting people that it was a cheering section

Seriously??  Only in Wyoming do we need a sign to inform people that they are at a sporting event and in a section where cheering will take place :tickedoff:

People talking about the sort of disconnect between the upper and lower student sections are spot on. I always sit down low, and there's one group that sit on the bottom of the top section and they yell and make noise, but one game last year I had an exam and was later than normal and had to sit up top, it's a totally different atmosphere. Other than the CSU game, and CU last year, it could be mistaken for Coe Library

Well another thing not helping gaining a vibe a in the AA is that we just aren't very good this year. Attendance was very disappointing last year for that special team we had but I can see why its right where it is now. You've got to be a little bit more competitive then this to get Wyo fans to travel through shitty conditions and cough up dough/time. It's all about checking out Adams one last time this year. I thought the other guys could develop more and our system could squeeze more out of this team. It's not looking that way, so it's hard on our fans to commit big time through a development year. Can we even expect that from our fans??? If the student body is weak already well in a development year it can just vanish. Only thing that can possibly revive attendance now is sustained winning at high levels.

Here is my opinion on this topic - the older fans (who have been supporting Wyoming Athletics for decades) are getting older, dying off, or having health problems which prevent them from coming to the games and the younger generation is not filling in as fast as the older generation is leaving. I know this is true because my wife & I have reached that point where we can no longer make the games. I see many of our friends with the same problem. We aren't as old as Kenny Sailors (who was our friend), but health problems don't always happen at the same age. It all comes back to the UW Admin addressing this problem, otherwise it's not going to get any better.

There hasn't been the success needed to grow the fan base or at least replace the older Cowboy fans. I mean some of the older ones remember Fiesta Bowls and wild stuff like that.

WYCowboy, thank you for the insight - hats off to the older folks who have supported this team through decades of mediocrity. The administration needs to figure out how to engage the younger generation in the community and the team needs to spend a little time around town embracing them in order to get them to open up their wallets and spend their spare time being at the games. We are not entitled to anything, have to earn it. God Bless.
