I think he has Nance too low.

Nance is a legit MWC POY candidate, even more so if Wyo keeps making noise, winning road games and protecting homecourt. Not to mention, he already has 2 game winners.

And Nevada will not stay where they are in the standings, so Burton will not be getting as much praise as he is now.

I would put Larry top 5, but I don't think he will get that kind of recognition in the post-season awards. Imagine how good Nance will be next year? He is going to have us considering his place among the all-time UW greats by this time next year IMO.

The MWC POY is Thames award to lose at this point, Murray is just trolling SDSU fans by putting Burton that many spots ahead of Thames.

Or even for just not having Thames #1. I'd put Larry probably 3rd, Thames will win it, barring something major happening

Thames? He is only in the Top 5 of 1 category in the MWC...and that is steals.

He is by far SDSU's most important player, and if you are going by just giving the award to the best player on the team that wins it, then I can see him winning it, but what he is doing isn't anymore impressive than Larry Nance or Deonte Burton.

Nance is having himself a heck of a year and is contributing in so many areas of the game, but the plain and simple truth is that he isn't scoring enough to beat out some of those other guys who would be candidates for MW POY.

1.)Burton-I don't honestly think he's the best player in the league, but he is leading the league in scoring as well as a big part of the reason Nevada has itself positioned pretty well in the conference standings. Moreso, Nevada without Burton would be in a bad place, so I think you could make a thoughtful case for him if the voting were today based on that at least.

2.)Bairstow-Probably who I would chose for best player in the league right now, he only trails Burton slightly in scoring, but is significantly better than those below him, and is scary efficient while doing so like the writer points out.

3.)Williams- I think he was placed appropriately, still scoring lots, still good percentage from 3, and nobody in the league is even coming close to matching him in assists.

4.)Thames- Maybe he isn't looking as impressively statistically as some of the others, but he definitely passes the eye test when you watch him play, additionally he is the best player for a team that is not only the best in the MW right now, but is one of the top 10, if not top 5 teams in the nation.

5.) And right around here is where I'm putting Nance- Having a fine season, and in pretty good position to make 1st team All-MWC, but as of now I don't think I could objectively place him ahead of these others if we're talking POY

I was saying earlier, there are too many teams still alive in the MWC to determine a a front runner.

Give it a couple weeks when there are just a handful of teams left in the MWC race then let's take a look.

At this point, the POY "short list" is probably the exact same as the pre-season list.

Just let it play out.

If Nance keeps propelling Wyo to wins, especially during the @NM, @UNLV vs. SDSU stretch, then we can see if he really belongs on that list.

Same with Burton, if Nevada starts dropping games, then he doesn't deserve to be on the list.

Disagree with the scoring comment. Last year Kendall Williams won the MWC POY with only 13.3 ppg (10th in the league). The overall statistics (rebs, blocks, steals, assists, etc.) all play a role, but the most important is team success. Best player on best team is always in a good position.

That's why I put Thames on the top, with Bairstow 2nd. If SDSU wins the league (and they have clearly been the best team to date this season), Thames probably wins as he is clearly their best player and MVP. Bairstow is best player on 2nd best team and UNM has a chance to win the league again if SDSU falters.

I just don't see Nevada keeping up the pace in terms of conference standings, so I don't see Burton winning POY, although he will be first team.
