Renfree, Kiely are locked in battle for starting center

Charlie Renfree didn’t bat an eye when Wyoming’s final spring depth chart showed his name at the top of the center position.

“Was I surprised? No, I don’t think so,” said Renfree, a 6-foot-3 sophomore who says he’s up to 280 pounds. “... Going into spring ball I think I kind of just flipped the switch and told myself, ‘I’m going to be the guy this year.’”

The guy all of last year was Rafe Kiely, now a 6-3, 304-pound senior.

After starting all 12 games in 2014, the Wheaton, Illinois, native said being demoted to second string fueled his fire during the summer.

“Of course it did,” Kiely said. “I think it’s a big mark to you to step up your game. You need to get out there and compete and do your best. That’s really all you can do at the end of the day.”

Kiely’s motivation to take back his starting role coupled with Renfree’s desire to protect the job he earned in the spring has provided a head-to-head competition unmatched at any of UW’s other positions.

The Cowboys are thin at most spots, so it’s a luxury for UW coaches to see the play of their top two centers heightened by each other.
