Remembering the AA

So the last few weeks I have been checking out old pics from Cowboys games and figured I would share my favorite pic of the bunch.

Who else has some good attendance pics?

ikr? Only if we could see it that full. TBH I can't find one pic with an attendance worth showing except some rendering of a make believe time and place. That saddens me :(

At least I have some pics of the War full when we played teams that travel.

I hope after all the renovations are done we have real photos that have that big of a crowd. the best real pic I have is from the Womens NIT.

I would like to see this attendance for all Basketball games.

I hadn't noticed that court design before. I hope they use that next season!

Not a picture, but a video.

I know the quality doesn't show it, but there were over 15,000 fans watching the Cowgirls win the WNIT.

And of course, the record setting attendance when Wyoming won our conference title against Utah in front of 16,000 screaming cowboy fans. Can't see them much, but boy do you hear them.

I remember that game well. If I recall correctly it was damn near 17,000 people. They sold standing room tickets and got in major trouble with the fire marshall!

I love the place in all aspects, I've been to the Jon Huntsman Arena on the University of Utah in Salt Lake and they are mirror images of one another, one in Red and one in Brown and Gold. AA is hands down a great place to watch a basketball game, better than Moby, by far and even better than when I saw the Pokes at Arizona at McKale Center in 2004. Regardless I am in favor of them dropping the attendance to around 12,000 instead of 15k, i've only seen it full, in person, maybe 3 times, and even for the Garth Brooks concert. But since we hardly average 5500 it'll look a bit more full. I hope we get a good video board and overall a more fun fan experience than ever b4.....my 1st game was during my 1st year of school 1988, the year after Fennis and Eric years, during Reggie Slater's years.
I love the AA!!!!!

I remember watching that championship game. I was so pissed at our defense for nearly fouling Spivey on that 3 that it took me about 5 minutes to clam down before I could celebrate the win. IMO In that situation, a team should just make the other team inbounds the ball and then literally stand in one spot or sit down on the court so they don't foul.

I'm proud to say I was at both of the largest attendance games: The Utah game that clinched it for us and the women's NIT championship. If only we could get the place rocking like that again. Maybe one day!

I remember being in shock they even contested that shot as well. Could have easily been called a foul. Thank God it wasn't!!!

Lots of fans were stunned the Pokes would even try to contest that last shot. I think it was a collective "Paris, what were ya thinkin', man?!"

(Nick Jacobsen took that last shot.)

We were at both games, also. The decibel levels at those games were incredible. I remember the Cowboy players having to stick their fingers in their ears as they walked off the court during timeouts in the Utah game.

I also remember the opening comment from the Denver Post CS-ewe beat writer's post-game column (Pokes crushed the sheep in the AA prior to the Utah game): "In an atmosphere so electric, it was nearly frightening....."

The Pokes had just under 10K for the SUDS game in the AA last year before the wheels fell off. I think we can see large crowds in the AA again under Shyatt, if/when they get the roster to a point where 8-10 guys are solidly contributing. Future recruiting classes are critical.

i was in the rafters for that one, and remember it well too, place was so electric and fun....hopefully some day we can achieve crowds of 10k and above soon!!!

I was working a concessions stand for the Utah game. I kept trying to sneak away to watch the game...especially when the crowd erupted.

Sadly, never again will we even break 12,000.

16,009 officially for that Utah Wyoming game. My brother and I were in the first or 2nd row of the student section. I think that is the only time I've ever rushed the court; and that is my favorite game I watched in the AA. I remember at time outs you would look up top where the "windows" are and you'd see people all along the top row.

Interesting tidbits I picked up from somewhere over the years. the top row of seats in the AA is 1,000 seats around. The top brown section holds 5,000 seats (This is before that video board they put in)

I started going to Wyoming basketball games a few years after my parents moved me to Laramie in 1982. Since about 1985/6 I've only missed a handful of games. Lots of good memories there.

My dad is retiring and won't be in Laramie the next few years - so Saturday may be the last time i get to watch a Cowboy game with my dad. I really hope we go out with a win.

But the game experience will be so much better. And the facility will look "fuller" when on TV even though there will still only be 3400 people there. And my fat ass can fit in the new 22" seats (took some lube to get into the current 19" ones).

I still remember the first game I attended in the A-A:
Attendance Rank = 35
Date = December 14, 1987
Opponent = Georgia State
Result = Win 100-89
Attendance =11,927
Also present, the San Diego Chicken.

Note that the Pokes even drew more fans that the new configuration will hold for a non-conference game against Georgia State that to place either during Finals or after the students could go home for break.

The place did not need to be full to rock.

I never thought the current seats were uncomfortably narrow. In fact, I generally assumed that their most critical feature was that they fold up so that they are not in the way for fans who are on their feet.

I'm an old fart, so my story will be remembering playing in the AA in my senior year of high school from Riverton in 1982. We won the "Consolation Championship" since we lost to Casper Natrona (I think) in the first round. Rawlins won that year over the prohibitive favorite Natrona team by playing the slow down game favored by Rawlins coach Tony Windis.
