This idea we have a guy on staff that can take over if the HC takes another job is laughable..

Signed, Boise State.

Boise is no doubt the exception to the rule. What other schools have done what they have done with a string of head coaches? We have to find our own model.

Oregon.

It could be done here if the people in charge were intelligent enough to go about it the right way.

Well, we need to find our Rich Brooks first.

I actually don't hate the Stitt idea. I'd rather take a risk on a guy like that who's a bit of an outsider but is genuinely innovative than some of the other names who've been discussed. He wouldn't be the first guy with a similar career path that wound up in the big time. I know that we need to get the budgetary issues fixed but if you're operating with limited resources the Moneyball era teaches us that we have to find market inefficiencies and exploit them.
I like your thinking. Develop a Sabremetric system like baseball has except for college football. Find a way to maximize our success against our limitations. Stitt's outside of the box thinking may be just what we need *cough* Manny Mitsakas :thumb:

TBH I think Wyoming needs new outside of the box thinking that runs the Football program. Conventional isn't, hasn't and won't ever work here.

I have been against Stitt as a HC since we began discussing it but for him as an OC. This morning I had a change of heart. If we can't get a home run hire like Tedford then we might as well roll the dice with Bob Stitt. My main beef with hiring him was the fact that he wouldn't have the connections/know how to run a D1 program. But he has many coaching connections as an offensive guru and the national media love him so we would get a lot of coverage. I just worry that he is going to get his shot somewhere else and we will look at what he does thinking "what might have been". I would still prefer to get him as an OC right now but we should at least interview him.

As a OC, Stitt is a great candidate but shouldn't be a HC candidate IMO. The jump from D-II to D-I is very big on so many levels. Even though Gilmore hasn't been a HC or Coordinator, he has a bigger leg up when it comes to knowing D-I talent than Stitt. Hasn't Gilmore been a D-I recruiting coordinator before also?

Of course the likes of Tedford/Mangino have been in the trenches for BCS football as HC's.

I believe this is exactly what will happen. As he wasn't in the final round of candidates given an interview, I believe it is highly unlikely that we will interview him at this point. In fact, we may have already burned the Stitt bridge.

Gilmore seems to be who we are most likely going to end up with.

And that is Bill Lewis #2 - if that.

Trust me, I am not very excited at the prospects of a Gilmore hire. I'm not sure whether I'd rather still have DC if that is the case. Maybe he will do well here, but I would believe that we are the only D1 school considering him at all for a HC position.

If UW goes this route, or any route that is not a name-top-quality-hire, the chances of making it out of mediocrity are very, very slim for the football program. And as I mentioned in another thread, that very well may be what Burman wants to have happen. He can (and will) just continue to throw his hands up and point at Cheyenne and the state of Wyoming as his excuses.

If we don't make a top name hire, then I would rather us take a huge risk and go with Stitt rather than Gilmore or some of the other guys out there. Might as well try to catch lightning in a bottle and see what happens.

Agree 100%. You don't go anywhere without taking risks. People first thought Roach and Tiller among others were idiots for their unconventional offensive schemes. Now everyone in the country is running the spread.
