Recruiting state if Wyoming.

I know a lot of fans would like to see more kids from our state on ther roster. I realize this is a complaint against both Glenn and Christensen. Both did recruit Wy kids but the players quit because they were not D1 caliber. I would like to point out that The only Wyoming hs player during the DC era who has/will accepted another D1 offer is Bryan to florida. Can Bohl really build a team with a significant number of Wyoming recruits?

For the historians out there ( Wyokie?)how many Wyoming hs players were on the roach teams? Tiller teams in 95, 96?

I have heard that the 68 sugar bowl team was or nearly void of any Wyoming players, is this true?

I hope Bohl finds some hidden gems in Wyoming, and there has been a handful of Quality players( wendling, Prosinski, Finn, Kirven, bramlets, & Hall) but there is a longer list of Wy hs scholarship and walk ons who never came close to panning out.

My fear is that Bohl will recruit inferior talent if he makes Wyoming a key recruiting base, but I have hope that he will continue the pipeline in Colorado, and pick up some snow belt players. Also, Kaligis staying keeps the pnw connection which seems to work.
 
I don't think he will just grab kids for the sake of grabbing them. I could see 2-3 kids a year. Could be more depending on the talent that year. I think the bulk if the kids will come from Colorado, Montana, Kansas and Nebraska. Will be interesting how many come from the NW and Minnesota/Wisconsin?

Good to know! I think two kids a class wouldn't be a bad thing if they are the right players. I just don't believe Wyoming hs football can produce 5 plus D1 players every year, and I think that recruiting a high number of in state players is an invalid complaint against many a coaching staff at UW.
 
It's not hard to find a player from Wyoming that can play football.. you just have to be willing to find them. I see Montana do it all the time. For example..
Marc Mariani from Havre.. walk-on to the football team.. now plays for the Tennessee Titans. One of Montana's all-time leading receivers.
Shann Schillinger from Baker.. unsure if he was walk-on or scholly.. now plays in the NFL with the Titans.
Kroy Biermann from Hardin.. scholly player.. now with the Falcons.
Colt Anderson from Butte.. walk-on.. now with the Eagles.
Chase Reynolds from Drummond (six man football).. walk-on (I think..).. now plays for the Rams.

Sometimes guys with a certain amount of drive and desire to play football can be made into quality football players. Sometimes they come from unlikely places (Drummond or Baker).. know of many college coaches who take a look at talent from Wright? Or Burns? Or Cokeville? Or Thermopolis? Is there an athlete in those schools that would be willing to walk-on and play for the Cowboys? Maybe good enough to earn a scholarship? Talent can come from anywhere you just have to have a coach willing to spend some time looking for it and a staff willing to mold that talent into a division 1 football player.
 
It would be a waste of time to recruit players from Wyoming just to recruit them. Some guys may be DI material but most aren't, especially right away. What the head coach of UW needs to do is reach out to these kids and try to get them to walk on. I know there are a few kids from Worland that could have contributed to Wyoming athletics in Brad Hunter and Robert Heyer. Neither of these two deserved a DI scholarship coming out of high school but were talented enough to possibly contribute after a few years of developing their techniques and bodies. There are plenty of kids around Wyoming like these two that Craig Bohl should be targeting as walk-ons. They may prefer to go elsewhere for playing time, but they may also be interested in the opportunity to play DI and represent their state.

North and South Dakota also.

Bohl has a reputation in those states. He can bring them in. Especially the ones who are good enough and prefer the higher level of FBS over FCS. You have to consider if the Fargo School falters and if UND continues to have problems.

Hope they have strong recruiting in Colorado. Especially Denver metro and Northern Colorado. I'm sure they will. Coach Mac at CSU talks about recruiting here, but he'll overlook some players. They always do.

He is also the only scholarship player on roster since Prosinski if I'm not mistaken. And I could see Bohl finding 1-2 per year, not just 1-2 on the team total
 
Well, Martinez from GR quit, Meredith from GR quit, and Anaya from Casper quit. They were all scholly I believe.
 
That is a valid point. I don't think they would have contributed much but I know at least Martinez and Anaya were on schollie
 
What Bohl is saying is that they're going to do their research in Wyoming and basically that they don't want to miss an in state recruit. This doesn't mean he's only recruiting Wyoming
 
North Dakota has a population of just under 700,000, and Bohl's 2013 NDSU team had 22 home state players. All they were able to do was beat Kansas State and make a run at a 3rd FCS national championship.

Ultimately, this state deserves a team of players that know it is a privilege to wear Steamboat. For every kid on that team is 50 others raised right here in Wyoming that would have given anything to have that chance. Home grown kids will generally know what an honor it is to wear the bucking horse.

I was excited when I read Bohl's comments, and I hope he follows through. There is absolutely no reason why the top 2-5 Wyoming high school players each year shouldn't be given a chance. If not, then why the hell are we even called the Wyoming Cowboys. Go Pokes!

Good point about the Fargo team. They have a good number of North Dakota players. You have to remember that is with another FCS school up the road in Grand Forks that has a number of North Dakota players.

Don't underestimate the talent level in Wyoming. The pride in Wyoming for the football team is there, even with the recent down seasons. With a coach like Bohl coming in, recruiting within the state could be more productive.
 
Interesting point that some of you are making. Even if you look at our per capita production of DI football players, we are far below other States. Naturally, a small population can make the stats more variable than larger populations (i.e. even 1 or 2 players can skew our per capita stats).

However, do you think it is lack of talent or lack of talent development. I can tell you from traveling around the country, Wyoming High School football is light years "behind" (for lack of better term) other States' High School football programs. I'm not saying Wyoming is bad, should change, or whatever, maybe our system works great for us. I'm only asking does that mask DI talent or is the DI talent not here?

I'll say it for you....Wyo highschool football is bad.
We're small, and slow. We are athletic but not fast or strong enough or skilled enough. Bottom line.

There were a few wyoming players on those teams. Not sure about the years but the Talich boys were from Pine Bluffs I think one I them played for Roach. There was a WR from Natrona that played Justin Byleveld. I'm pretty sure Je'Ney Jackson from Guernsey was on some of Tiller's teams but not the 96 team.

And there have been a lot more on scholarship that quit as well...over the past 5 or 6 coaching staff's.

I think the coaches feel the pressure to scholly some Wyoming kids, even when deep down they know they can't hack it, and it is proven when the quit.
