That is an interesting notion...one I've not heard of. Is this common? And if so...at what level? Just the highest levels?

I haven't scoured the G5 ranks but I know bigger programs do it. Stanford and Michigan are examples. I haven't looked at all programs but I'm guessing several do. I don't know what the donation level would need to be, but even if the chair supplemented 100k, it might help get some top flight coordinators?

I'm no accountant, but I imagine that in order to setup a endowed position with enough money to entice desirable candidates, it would have to be several million dollars. Might be asking a lot of him to front the whole thing.

I think they start ballpark of a million but I'm not sure how much salary that generates. I don't think it is uncommon for an individual to make sizable donation to get naming rights and get the ball rolling. Others then donate to it until it hits the target.

Still, even a 50 or 60k bump might help. I'm guessing that chair would be 1.5 to 2 mill but strictly a guess.

I've never setup anything like that. If you can take a $1m endowment, you should be able to safely expect it to return 5% (probably more, but I'm being conservative - I believe the stock market has returned an average of 7% over the last 100 years). That is $50k a year in interest. Take half of the interest and give it to the coaching staff as bonuses, and re-invest the other half to keep compounding the interest over time.

You would probably want 30-40m in there in order to make a significant boost across the board for coordinators.

I was thinking more of a chair for the oc position first. Could shoot to add DC chair later.

I don't think we need to boost all salaries by chairs. Mainly just oc and DC. Academic departments do it all the time to entice top quality candidates to key positions. The entire department doesn't get a salary boost from the chair, just the prof who receives the chair.

We should have just not had an OC over the last 5 years and put the money we would have paid into an endowment. We'd be in the same positions as we are now and had an endowment :rofl:

This is kind of tricky too. A large portion of O-Line players are not just interested in football, but also tend to gravitate toward Engineering, Math, and Physics. Last time I looked, those were quite neglected programs in terms of funding (though that might have changed).

That said, some of our O-Line did go into those very majors
Cryder - Mechanical Engineering
Stofer - Engineering (Undeclared which one)
Thatcher - Chemical Engineering
Velasquez - Computer Science
Wallace - Mechanical Engineering


Not sure there's much we can do about that, though.
