I won't place all of the responsibility on the QB. Without a doubt Anderson has missed guys being open, ALL QB's have done this. The real issue with Anderson in my book is that he doesn't manage the game well, it manages him. He has taken too many bad sacks, i.e. - keep going backwards to just get caught more than 10 yards behind the line of scrimmage is on him. Throw the ball away instead of taking a bad sack. He wants to make plays, I get that, but just throwing up a hail Mary is a recipe for disaster, as we have seen with so many INT's. So, he heaves the ball up into double coverage and very narrow windows, which is bad decision on his part imo. He doesn't always manage the clock well and we have seen that from the coaches as well.
But for some reason some WR's disappear, like Durr. Why wasn't Durr more utilized. Fitzgerald is good, but Durr is a really dangerous receiver once he gets the ball, he makes things happen. But Durr isn't regularly targeted. I just have to ask this, why is Sargent out there taking an important position when he rarely gets open and rarely blocks well?
I am NOT going to blame the OL for the pressure that Anderson has felt for the most part. Opposing coaches have discovered that with more pressure on the line, Wyoming can't overcome this pressure. So the opposing DC's overload the box, too many attackers vs blockers. Anderson doesn't get rid of the ball quickly enough, Wyoming's WR don't get open or separation well, and the coaches have not developed a good enough blocking scheme with the TE's and RB's to keep Anderson from having to run. I will knock Anderson for pulling the ball down too quickly and deciding that he has to take off. Anderson does NOT throw the ball well when he is on the run, he isn't a Josh Allen.
For some reason the play calling has been dismal. Yesterday, as they have done in past games, call that pass out to the flat and then expect the WR to break tackles to get open. That play has gotten stuffed so many times it truly should be called the Turkey of All Plays. But the coaches seem to keep trying it. The object is to get the ball down the field to not lose 5 yards on first down.
The reality is that the offensive coaches are throwing anything and everything against the wall to see what sticks. Anderson is limited and his decision making is questionable at times, but coaches have done him no favor by designing poor offensive game plans and poor play calling.
Sawvel is a defensive coach at heart and while he knows how to develop games plans against offenses, he doesn't know how to develop offensive game plans. I am surprised that Johnson didn't do better, I expected a lot more out of the offenses under him. A good offensive coaches truly know the talent and how to utilize that talent to the best of its abilities, but we don't seem to have offensive coaches that truly utilize the talent they have to its best advantage.
