Random thoughts on the Air Force game

1. Basketball is a game of momentum, is reason 754 why you should start your best players. Maybe if we start our best lineup we don't fall into such a massive hole. When James came into the game we were already down big, and you could see he was pressing. If he starts the game 0-0 he might not feel the weight of the world on his shoulders.

2. Momentum is a funny thing. It can't be quantified or seen, but it's as real as a cold Wyoming winter. Once Air Force had the momentum they fed off it and played relaxed. Once Wyoming saw the momentum slipping away they felt the pressure and played tight. One mistake lead to two mistakes, and so on and so forth. Before we knew it we where down 15-0, and instead of trying to chip away at the lead we compounded our problems and started chasing the score. Inducing yet another mistake. It truly was a cavalcade of blunders that lead to the worst start in Wyoming basketball history.

3. Make no mistake about it the more deserving team won. Wyoming played awful and in no way am I making excuses for their performance. But the officiating in this conference is ATROCIOUS and needs to change. Their is just no consistency in the foul calling. One thing is called a foul on one possession and isn't called on the very next possession. And by no means am I saying that Wyoming wasn't the beneficiary of some bad calls, because we certainly were. Too many times it seems that the officials have their own agendas and aren't concerned with preserving the integrity of the game.

4. Say what you want about our performance, but in no way did I see a lack of effort today. I saw a bunch of guys that were frustrated and playing poorly but giving it all they had. In the second half I thought we actually played tremendous defense but it was far too little too late. I sat just behind the players bench and I could see the hurt in their eyes. I know this should be expected but I have seen far too many teams give up and act like they don't give a damned. I appreciated that they were feeling the same hurt that I was.

5. Give Barnes and Marshall credit. They are the teams biggest cheer leaders and are constantly pumping up players and providing support.

6. What a sad way for Mcmanamen to go out. A horrific game on the heels of a bad season. I will always appreciate his contributions to our program. But I'm looking forward to more production from his spot next year. Unless of course Edwards plays Gorski 30 minutes a game.

7. Edwards is getting crucified right now, and much of the criticism is justified. He's done a 1,000 things throughout the season that have made me pull my hair out. But at the end of the day we are what our record says we are, which was better than last year. I like Shyatt as much as the next guy but his last team was out performed by Edwards first team, while Edwards had less talent. Does this excuse Edwards for his many blunders? Absolutely not. I just think a first time ever head coach who improved the team in his first year deserves a little more time. If were still seeing some of the same basic fundamental mistakes next year and he can't learn from his mistakes after a catastrophe like we just witnessed, then it will be time to get out the pitchforks.

I disagree Edwards took a worse team and made it better. Even though we had Adams last year, the rest of the team was freshmen and players who had experienced little playing time.

We were 8-10 in a conference that is the worst I've seen in 35 years. This is a one bid league. Four of our 8 wins were against Air force and SJS, 2 horrible teams. We were 4-10 against everyone else.

There is no excuse to fall behind 26-0. Call a time out, set screens or backpicks for a backdoor alley oop. Run a set play for your best players, Dalton or James. Instead, our first basket was scored by Cody Kelly. An offense should be to get your best players the ball at the right spots on the court with the best matchups. We never do that. So we get Gorksi and Jmac firing up half assed 3's. Does anyone on the staff say 'Jmac and Gorski are shooting percentages lower than a 5th grade girls team. Maybe someone else should shoot". Our shooting percentage on the road is significantly lower than at home. No strategy to pound it inside. Maybe start Naughton instead of Gorksi? I question any coach who plays Gorski at all, let alone start him. He is the slowest D1 player I've ever seen who isn't 7 feet tall.

The constant whining about the officiating is silly. These refs are part time employees who do this as a part time jobs for very little money. Is the conference ready to pony up for full time professional referees? BTW, it seems only losers complain about the refs. This board is full of them.

the jury's out and next year with some great recruits and such and the team knowing what to expect after 1 year under AE, there's potential but we shall see where we go from here. Refs hardly ever are part of the outcome of games, coaching decisions and player actions are.
Time will tell

The debacle yesterday all stems from Edwards not starting his best player for some unknown reason. What good can come from it? I don't understand it

I'm with you on Gorski. I don't see what he brings to the team. He can't dribble, he can't defend AT ALL and he can't really shoot. If that's what you're looking for give me a scholarship.

I don't get it either. Edwards did make the statement a while back, that he likes to bring Dalton & James off the bench, to inject more "energy" into the game. WTF is that about? It clearly doesn't work, but hey, at least JJ won the MWC "6th man award" this season. He wouldn't have won that without Edwards' coaching style and philosophy!

So far he is the epitome of a high upside project who has not developed to his potential. He was touted out of his international high school as a sniper but his shot has only seemed to have gotten worse. It bums me out as I was as high on him as I have been of any signee over the last decade.

Obviously Edwards bet someone before the season that JJ would win 6th man of the year and he needed to be sure he collected on his bet. It's the only explanation that explains why his lineups were the way they were all year.

But what difference will it really make if he doesn't give them minutes. If he doesn't start his best players. But maybe he's figured that out now. I'm not betting he has. He likes the vets (consider Gorski) over the youngins. Same old for next year.

Edwards and at least Jeremy Shyatt were hand picked selections by Larry Shyatt that Burman agreed to.

This team (other than Louis Adams) were all Larry Shyatt recruits (thanks for the recruiting help Jeremy and I hope you thanked your daddy for getting you the job).

They were all recruited when we had the best team since 2002.

The lineup included two players who were redshirted to get them ready to play D1 ball as in McNanamen and Herndon. While these guys have developed into very average D1 players, they have their shortcomings such as McNanamen really needed to stay outside and shoot uncontested 3's and Herndon can only play tough inside against weak opponents. Neither player were the "go to" type of players a team needs. Only James is the player that has fulfilled that role.

On to next year. The typical Wyoming event - maybe next year will be better. Questions to be answered:

1. How does Edwards coach?
2. Will Jeremy find more stellar recruits such as Barnes? (we do need bench cheerleaders)
3. As Joe Glenn so often claimed "another birthday" helps, will a team with a potential 6 seniors find a way to finish above .500 in conference play?
4. Does the program win games in February or tailspin to the Shyatt average of .440 in the MWC like it did this year? After all, this program will take time to rebuild from the marginal recruiting job Larry Shyatt is responsible for. The good part and kudos to Shyatt is there are no grade issues.

It will be very interesting to see who comes back for next season. This is the first year in a long time that I am EXPECTING attrition and will be shocked if both Adams and JJ are still members of this team come fall camp. I wouldn't be shocked to see Lieberman pursue greener pastures as well.

Why would lieberman want to leave? He's already spent 3 years here, and he's basically guaranteed the starting PG spot next year unless a big time immediately eligible transfer comes in...

He was also the recipient of a fair amount of public lashings, benching, and little praise from his head coach while sharing minutes with a red shirt freshman with less "prowess" on the court. It is obvious that Edwards is not "high" on lieberman

Interested too, I only think Adams will leave, cuz he was in the doghouse all year from what it appeared. Time will tell like always

I believe this to be a naive way of thinking. I hope we can all agree that these refs aren't the cream of the crop. That said, they are undeniably inconsistent, and thereby get their dirty paws prints all over the game, tainting it, and OFTEN making it a compromised crime scene.

Don't know if some of our players will leave, but sure hope you're back next year, "random thoughts" guy.

Meanwhile, CSU is absolutely piss pounding Air Force.

The inconsistent and terrible mwc officiating didn't seem to bother CSU at all. The juggernaut that is Air force basketball couldn't get the momentum going for another 26-0 run. If we had an administration that remotely cared about being competitive, the entire staff would have been fired by now.

At least Wyoming fans don't have to book hotel rooms for the expensive Las Vegas Friday night. Come in on Tuesday and leave Wednesday while the rooms are cheap.

You won't hear me bitch about the refs. The officiating is very far down the list of Wyoming's problems. There could be no refs and you should't fall behind 26-0. That's almost impossible.

That comment wasn't directed at you. It was intended for the posters on this board who bitch about the refs in every game.
