rampant optimism

i agree, I drank the kool aid last year, thought we'd be alright with an ok schedule, and then the bottom fell out, even though I felt ok with how we looked against Texas down there. I was disappointed just as everyone, and I understand our leader got hurt, but once that happened it seemed like the rest of the team somewhat panicked. I think everyone's learned from all the lessons from last year and we'll see what DC and his O playcalling is all about, if he's spozed to be this Guru we've all heard about. He's getting all "his" players that his staff has recruited, no excuses in what was left in the cabinet previously. It's time to put up or else....lol
GO POKES, just be competitve in the conference this year, that's all I ask

I don't have pessimism or optimism. Just going to watch and see how it plays out before i get too optimistic. Will see how we do at Nebraska.

I did think DC wanted to have our offense running as fast as Oregon's last year by the sounds of what they were saying out of spring camp and before fall camp and thought that would be great to do but sounds like the offense isn't going to be going that fast which is somewhat disappointing.

Hopefully they surprise me come August 31st.

what makes you say it looks like it isn't going to be as fast? did I miss something? weren't they going every 12 seconds or something?

I was thinking the same way as you that it was going to be every 10 to 12 seconds the ball would be snapped but I read Gagliardi this morning on his chat and he said they don't snap the ball as fast as Oregon was last year. Said it was closer to 18 to 19 seconds. Which is still a quick tempo, don't get me wrong but from what they were saying in the spring I thought it would be closer to every 10 to 12 seconds. Maybe they still will snap it faster but knowing how conservative DC has coached in the past I can see it not being what we were told.

Like i said I hope they surprise me against Nebraska and it ends up being very fast paced.

I sure won't miss the down, set, hutt, hutt.....look over to the sidelines for the play....that really annoyed me

The real goal is to get back to a bowl game. Don't care where, just do it. And beat whoever is there. Realistically, Wyoming will probably chose from New Mexico (highly likely option), Hawaii (Worst case no-no), Boise (At least fans would pack the stadium with close location), or San Diego (BYU anyone?). I hope it New Mexico, as 2013 is the last time a Pac-12 opponent will go to that bowl game.

After what I saw today- the o-line has improved. Smith is quicker, his passes are sharp, he's looking off receivers. The WR's are impressive. Great hands. Some new plays and packages. The play book and script will be radically different from last year, less elementary, more algorithmic and adjustable. The tempo is quick, nothing designed for 6-7 second drop-and-pass. QB's are getting rid of the ball very quickly, 3-4 seconds, or they're taking off with the ball by 5-6. Didn't see much on the run game side of the equation. Hard to say of we're not good at it, we're great at defending it, or DC felt it wasn't a priority in the scrimmage.

On defense- let's put it this way- I'm not sure if our passing game is that good or if our pass defense is that bad. The run game couldn't do much against them. They're swarming to the ball better than I've seen in the past. However, they really struggled in penetrating the line- recorded two sacks against the #2 O. 3rd down defense doesn't appear to have shown much improvement, which was the biggest concern from last season (51% conversion rate vs. 'Pokes LY).

DC was most frustrated with the punting game. Tried four times out of the end zone, first three ended up as safeties, Gags in his blog put it on the punter, but the first snap went over his shoulder and nearly over the fence in the south EZ, second snap nearly bounced off the ground, third snap he had to chase down and was blocked out of the back of the EZ. Fourth one was wide right, again, but he got it off for about 40. It was the only part of the practice and scrimmage DC really criticized. While the punters need to make sure they're making every effort to snag the snap, from what I saw, long snapping might be an issue in pressure situations. That being said, snap-and-holds were pretty flawless. It think Williams missed one FG from 48 the entire session.

There was a "show onside" kick that went out of bounds, not good. But the thing I noticed most was the slow and sloppy play of the secondary. They were getting burned for wide open catches, smoked on YAC, and missed a few easy picks because they lost sight of the ball on a contained receiver.

This sounds liek a grandious recipe

Fast offense leads to faster punts by a crappy punter which in turn gives the ball back to a sloppy secondary being on the field for extended amounts of time.

Great.

Yep we are doomed. We will never score, and will allow the other team to run up the score every game...
