QB battle

It is wild to me that a dude with a college football history like his is even getting a look for the NFL.

He began his career at a JUCO in which he never saw the field. Then he came to UW where he basically sat for two seasons before having one of the worst seasons at QB that I have ever witnessed. Then he switched position to TE where he caught a total of 11 passes for 92 yards for the entire season.

And yet here he is getting called in for a workout with the Denver Broncos this week. Based on what? His size and athleticism? There are probably 3-4 guys at my local gym who fit this mold if NFL teams are really that desperate. I just don't get it.

I don't see any advantage Svoboda would be to an NFL team. Please give me your thoughts. I think the old bald coach may call some teams and offer a glowing opinion, but videos of his performance won't pass an eye test. IMO

I agree with you on this, but the Denver Broncos have called him for a workout this week. Apparently, his athleticism combined with his size is enough to entice NFL teams to think he could be a benefit?
 
You can't coach size. There are some examples of players getting a roster spot despite not playing college at all. Antonio Gates is the most famous example of this. Jimmy Graham played a year at Miami at TE, catching 17 passes. Derek Cooke got a look from the Dolphins because of his size and athleticism.
 
It’s simple with Svoboda why he would get a look. It comes down to roster size numbers. He can be your third string tight end, special teamer and tush push specialist all with only taking up a single roster spot. So instead of 3 guys, you can have 1 guy and use the other roster spots elsewhere.

Antonio Gates was also an All-American basketball player who averaged 20-7-4 for a mid major. Lets not insult the man by comparing him to Evan Svoboda. Lol.

No disrespect but it seems to me Svoboda has more fans now than during ootball season.

Who are his fans?

I mean, I wish him the best of luck chasing his dream but I can’t say I’m really a big ‘fan’ by any means. I was just stating that I won’t be surprised at all if he makes an NFL practice squad or even a roster given his physical tools and thus potential to meet a current NFL niche.

When I think of Svoboda as a Cowboy, I’ll probably always remember the guy who came in when Peasley missed a few snaps against Toledo and helped us win that bowl game and also the back up tight end who came in and threw an interception on the goal line leading to a loss to Air Force (which blame I place squarely on the incompetent Wyoming coaching staff because under no circumstance should Svoboda be throwing the ball in that situation). I’ll probably also remember the fact that he stayed on the team and tried to help in other ways after losing his starting QB spot when we see a lot of guys pack up and leave in similar situations. Had Wyoming had a competent coaching staff the past few years (ie a staff that limited his QB use to the correct situations and took advantage of his tools versus exposing his deficiencies), perhaps he would have a more favorable Wyoming playing ‘legacy.’

The Broncos found a diamond in rough with Crum, wonder if they figure Wyoming has talented athletes whose potential was untapped by Wyoming's coaching staff. Maybe the same will hold true for Svoboda but I have my doubts.
 
Remember Austin Forte, the QB turned TE? The Broncos took him as an undrafted free agent. They kept him two years on the practice squad but never made the roster. Kinda the same thing, "just looked the part" but not very good - like Svoboda.

If I remember right, Forte was going to make the team but got injured again. I believe he has that problem at UW too
