Pokes rush defense.

I think the Pokes rush D looked a lot better last week than it ever has since DC has been here.
A lot of people are going to look at the 375 rush yards and say no it is still garbage. But you have to realize that is what Nebraska does, is run it. And run it some more. The Pokes will not face another O-Line like that one, or a rushing game like that one.

The Pokes gave up 375 yards on 63 attempts averaging 5.95 yards per carry.
If you take away the 62 yarder from Abdullah and the 31 yarder from Cross, the Pokes gave up an average of 4.62 yards per carry. Again, not great, but the Pokes won't be facing RBs like that ANYTIME soon.

Not to mention the Pokes essentially shut down Martinez and contained him quite well, especially when it mattered most.

If the run D prepares like they did for Nebraska, and come out with the same intensity as they did, for games like Texas St., Idaho, Northern Colorado, Air Force, New Mexico, and CSU, those teams won't be able to rush the ball at all on the Pokes defense.

The Pokes could very well be 6-1 after 7 games (the 7th is CSU) if the defense plays like it did against the Huskers.
None of those teams are even close to Nebraska in terms of run game or overall offense.
Even with a bad run defense, Smith and the offense could win in shootouts in all of those games, but with an improved run defense like we saw in Lincoln, those games could all be big wins for the Pokes.

Did any defensive players get hurt? I saw Pelutasi got hurt but he ended up coming back in the game. Any players that are going to be out for a while?

I think that it was a typo, Puletasi did come back late in the game. I think that he meant to say that Finley did not come back.

Is Finley going to be good to go against Idaho?

Nearly five yards a carry when you ignore the big runs and that is good? There was improvement in the defense's physicality which is nice but they still have a lot to prove.

Yeah re-read what I said. I didn't say it was good.

And again, it was NEBRASKA. We played NEBRASKA. Not Cal Poly. Not Weber St. NEBRASKA.

I don't know if you knew this, but Nebraska likes to run the ball. A lot. That is what they do. And they were the 8th best rushing attack in the country last season. Get over the 500 yards thing. We score fast then give them the ball. Then because it is Nebraska, they RUN THE BALL.

Like, seriously do people read what I say? Or do people just want to argue back and bitch about something?

So you're making excuses for their performance. If that makes you feel better then go for it. I'll wait a few games to see if they have actually changed. Finding moral victories in bad performances isn't really my thing.

Making excuses? Are you kidding me?
Here is a simple fact that some people just can not seem to understand.
When you have the offense Wyoming has, whether you score or not, the other team has the ball within 3 minutes usually. That means our defense is back on the field. The quicker we run our offense the more the defense is going to be on the field. Who gives a shit if they give up a lot of yards through out the game, because the opposing offense has so many chances?

Nebraska had the ball 14 times in that game, and gained 530 yards and scored 37 points.
They gained an average of 37.86 yards per drive (6.07 plays per drive), which included 26.79 rush yards per drive. They scored an average of 2.64 points per drive.

Bottom line is the although Wyoming lost, Wyoming didn't get steamrolled. The made the plays they needed to stay in it until the end. Picking Martinez off, stripping the ball from Martinez. Making Nebraska punt when they did.
Any other DC year, Nebraska would have kept scoring, and the final score would have been in the 50s.

If you can't see that the run defense is improved, you are blind.

I was actually pleased with the run D. Before we crucify them, remember:

1- Nebraska O Line is the best we will see all year
2- It was frickin 96 degrees
3- nearly 20% of their rushing yards basically came on one run by Abdullah
4- You will see Nebraska run for more yards in 6-7 games than what we gave up.
5- It was the first game of the year.
6- See #1

Yeah I think it is the best in the DC era. that is not really saying a whole lot but it is trending in the right direction. The big oline really wore us down in the 3rd and 4t hbefore we fought back and made some crucial stops. NOt a great or maybe even good running D but not as abysmal as last year. Will have to wait a few more games to see for sure.

I would have to agree with beaverpoke, it appears as if the run defense is improved. We only have one game to go on, but we did force some punts and a kick against what is supposed to be the best Neb O-Line in years. 2 Yrs ago we could not stop their run when we had to and this year we did. its only one game but we appear to be much better in my opinion... i dont care what the stats say, i go by what i see on the field and this team looks legit. Lets hope they can stay up and play at a high level.

What was your impression on Olive during the Nebraska game? I saw him get put on skates a couple times, but I realize its Nebraska. He came into the season pretty hyped up. Just curious on how others saw his performance.

For as much as the kid squats, I was surprised he was on his heels as much as he was. Chalking it up to game experience...

First game of his college career. Thought he did alright, but I'm sure he'll get better. The guy I cam away impressed with was Eddie Yarborough. It appeared as if he was in the Nebraska backfield throughout the 4th quarter....and made some nice tackles.

Yarbrough is a bad ass dude.
He is huge. He is fast. He is intense. He tackles. He is just bad ass.
Same with Pelutasi. He smashed that RB.

I saw him getting double teamed most the time. One play he fell to a knee, popped up and made the tackle at the line of scrimmage. Uso will be good.

Mertens name was called a ton.Yarbrough, mertens, puletasi, etc.... they all looked good.

I think if wyo plays D with the intensity they did against Neb the rest of the year we should be alright. I was more concerned with Nebs completion percentage. But wyo did hold them to minimal gains receiving. So give or take I think our D has showed vast improvement, especially with all the new players on the field.
