Pokes hire defensive quality control

My impression is that he is not going to be out there on the field in a Poke sweatshirt and cleats. He is going to be in an office looking at film and making recommendations to the DC and other defensive coaches. Is that correct?

He'll be living in Laramie, so think he will be at the games. In what capacity? who knows.

By OSU, do you mean Ohio State or Oklahoma State? His numbers at Ohio State look pretty good. Okie State not so much, but better than what we have now.

DC seems to be working hard at this.
Fired Tormey, promoted Cain. Hiring someone to fix the D for 4 games.
He wants a change, and wants it now.

Well duh. The man is out of a job if he doesn't get to a bowl. Panic mode.
 
One would assume that after Tormey's dismal performance in 2012, the light bulb would have gone on for DC and he would have made this move BEFORE this season started, instead of waiting till he had 4 games to go. This is nothing more than one more attempt to cover his ass.

I hope it works out. It would seem at this stage of the season it might be a Herculean task to teach these kids the bare fundamentals that many of them lack (like being able to wrap up and tackle). But we shall see.

I think DC gave Tormey a pass last year since it was his first on the staff. However, this year it was obvious we weren't improving on that side of the ball and something needed to be done. Unfortunately, it took two 50 point against games to get the ball rolling.
 
I really don't see why people are so insistent on firing the D-coordinator every season if they don't come in and make a huge change. Yes our D sucks and Tormey needed to go, but to fire someone after only one season isn't really fair.
 
Can we also remember there were 4 games B-Smith didn't finish last season, along with 2 he didn't even play in?
Pokes are easily bowl eligible last season if B-Smith plays. It's not ALL Tormey's fault.

Agree with this.

Fundamentally, we don't have a coaching/preparation problem, we have a recruiting problem.

That's hard to fix overnight. I understand DC's decision to fire Tormey, I just don't think that is going to magically solve anything.

Frankly, it's a long road to respectability on defense from where we are now.

Fortunately, we have enough players on offense coming back next year, that I am not sure the defense has to actually reach "respectable" in order to get some wins. Just a notch above "god awful" ought to do the trick. Weren't able to do that this year though.

I would argue that it is not really fair to the players who have to start from scratch again. In theory there is value to building from one season to the next.

50 ppg does not cut it though.

Will they be starting from scratch? Learning a whole new system in midseason? I would think not. I would think it would be a re-thinking of the defensive strategy for a game and especially of adjusting defensive tactics as the game progresses, not to mention defensive formations on a play-by-play basis.

Even if Smith had played all of those 4 games, it doesn't change the defensive numbers. Our defense finished rated 117 out of 124 in the country last season if I'm not mistaken. I understand Tormey had only been on the job for 1 year, but from where I was watching, I could not see any improvements being made.
