Playoff changes again?

It's time for the g6 to figure out a new system. I'm thinking something like an 8 team playoff in Nov. Winner gets autobid. Delusions of having more can be put to rest. For everyone else that doesn't make playoff, I'm sure there could be a cross division flex schedule of some type figured out. Yes, it would be a challenge for season ticket holders.

Either that or drop bowls and just do a playoff for top 12 or 16 that don't make playoff.

If it went to Nov playoff for the autobid, it would help stabilize the g6 ranks because everyone would basically have a shot to get in and the arms race for strongest schedule could slow down. It might also generate some TV interest. Of course There's always the possibility none of this matters in 2031.

If the G6 conference commissioners, university presidents, and athletic directors are not already working on a plan for when the split occurs, they are way behind the ball.

I'd prefer the G6 initiate the split rather than react when the power conferences do it for them. But I imagine there are still a decent number of G6 schools that have the delusion that they will somehow end up with the big boys if they just try a little harder.

Truest statement ever made on this board.

The G6 are so far behind in terms of access and, by extension, revenue that the the split has already occurred. We are dead men and women walking in the world of "big time" college sports. Frankly, the G6 hasn't competed in the championship tier since the BCS cartel locked us out. The game has been rigged for decades, and they are now in a position to reap their decades of effort to control everything. This is simply the 'sweep the leg' moment where the SEC and BIG assume the reins over the absolute monopoly they have always pined for - with even the likes of the ACC and Big 12 being swept up in their avarice. Watch this space for a similar attempt at gutting the NCAA basketball tourney. Cinderella is about to get kidnapped on the way to the ball and left in a ditch in the middle of nowhere. Their greed knows no bounds. They rig the system and then use the "lack of competitiveness" as a cudgel to bludgeon those that they have locked out, shedding rivers of crocodilian tears as they offer faux lament over the rivalries, tradition, competition, and history they have stomped and left broken in their wake. If we are honest, we are in a salvage operation and, unless we act soon to divorce ourselves from the abusive spouses we are shackled to, the only thing left will be the crafting of the epitaph on our headstones. The sooner we leave in a hail of gunfire, shaming, and distain and rebrand to a model that quite a few (including fans in the P4) would love to see come back (amateurism, rewarding innovation, equity, and embracing competition while denouncing and prohibiting monopolistic behavior), the happier we will be. It will be painful for those that envision a day where we could beat Alabama in the Natty, but reality is a nasty witch. Time to MCAGA. Make College Athletics Great Again.

Agree. Enough of the fool’s errand. We need scholarships and reasonable stipends for living costs for athletes (that’s it). Let the Alabama’s and Georgia’s of the world have their professional model. Bring back amateur sports to Wyoming and the majority of schools out there!

Couldn't agree more. I think many G6 fans are starting to come to the same realization.

I do wonder if the decision makers at the G6 universities are thinking the same thing. Very few, if any, have said so publicly. Maybe they just don't want to tip their hand, but a large part of me thinks they are going to continue to play the role of the jilted lover chasing their P4 lover around - even through the divorce papers and the restraining order. We all know how that ends.

I think g6 has to target the 2031 contingency plan. They shouldn't lock us out until then at the earliest.

I really like the idea of dropping bowls and having a playoff for the non-p4 playoff teams (i.e. the best g6 teams that don't make p4 playoff). It seems like a reasonable transition so the framework is ready should it be needed. The viewership and market would also be established for tv negotiations after separation.

I dont think you need to completely drop bowls and the local infrastructure that some of the bowls have established. Partner with some bowls as part of the playoffs (just like the current playoff).

I think that could work for championship game. I think neutral site might have attendance issues for g6 teams if multiple neutral site games. If fans travel to semi will enough travel to the final? Maybe. I'm definitely not sure about 3 neutral site games.

If just semi and finals, that'd be 3 bowls. Maybe do that or just championship. Other bowls could be non-playoff teams?

It would have to be semifinals at a neutral site minimum for the playoffs to maintain any credibility. Fans would travel to semifinals and likely final no doubt. I would like to see quarterfinals at neutral site too personally.

The bowl system is too far entrenched to do away with entirely. Personally I like the idea of short vacation someplace new to watch a game but would not like to travel multiple weekends in a row in expanded playoff system.

The FCS model seems to work pretty well for playoffs.. only the championship is neutral site. Home playoff games are a shit load of fun, way moreso than a neutral site quarter and semi final.

How about this: figure out how to shorten season by 1 week. Now championship weekend will be end of Nov. Take 8 teams to playoff. 1st round begins Dec 14 +/- (higher seed home). Losers to Bowl week of Christmas. 2nd round Dec 21 (higher seed home). Losers to Bowl NYE. Winners to championship NYD Bowl. All non-playoff teams play in Bowl games as normal. Could adjust days to not compete with NFL or P4.

Maybe too much too fast but you get the idea. Dates can be adjusted.

Been saying this for years, give us something to play for for a change
