I blame Tiller. Great coach, but I was screaming as soon as we took intential safety in WAC champ game vs BYU. Up by 6=great move, up by 5=bad move. We had a bend but don't break defense, teams got yards but few tds (in comparison to us). Yes, it gave us room to punt, but it invited only a FG to tie and send to OT which is what happened. Hindsight is 20-20, but I felt even at the time, we would have been much better off just punting even though we were backed up in our own endzone and force them to win it with a touchdown. I still feel we would have gotten the punt off (they were setting up good punt returner), we would have tackled their returnman, and we would have held them out of the endzone for the win and automatic Bowl game.
As it is, the 1996 Wyoming Cowboys are the best team in football history to be snubbed from postseason play. Even BYU players that testified to Congress that next summer (regarding their lack of a shot at national title-sound familiar?) said we were the best team they played that year (they trounced Big 12 in Cotton Bowl, finished undefeated, and ranked #6 in the nation).
As much as it still pisses me off, I would love to return to those frustrating years under Tiller when we finished 10-2 and no Bowl Game, or had the National Champs (Nebraska) on the ropes until a late fumbled punt in Lincoln. While we seemed to find a way to lose, at least we were competitive with the best teams in the Nation. I would love to be that frustrated again-our 2006 snub isn't close to 1996. Tiller's the man (minus one call), I hope DC is the man as well!
