So what will the koolaid drinkers say now???? And Jay P seems to still be drinking it. Will the feds go after Corbett for his roll?

The university is going to get hit hard by the NCAA. PSU deserves the Death Penalty.

Penn State could very well end up closing down in a few years. The nightmare is only beginning.....

+1

What's worse, paying players or raping little boys? If SMU got it for buying a few commitments, then Penn State shouldn't even be a question.

Can't believe there are those arguing about the NCAA's definition of "lack of institutional control"

So let me get this straight.....Boise State can be deemed as lacking institutional control for letting incoming Freshman sleep on couches (which was rescinded last month), but PSU's case "doesn't fit the definition the NCAA provides"????

Are you fuckin' serious? PSU should get hammered like nobody in history has for this. We're about to see just how pathetic the NCAA is in this case.

Has anyone heard anything regarding the feds?.....at least one year without football needs to be issued by ncaa :twocents:

I was actually discussing this about two months ago with some friends/colleagues and said that I think it could cost Penn State well over a 100 million in civil suits alone with the threat of punitive damages hanging over their heads. I was kinda laughed at, but with the release of this report it seems like a very likely scenario. (I said no way does Penn State want to leave it up to the jury with any evidence of purposely covering up the acts of a child molester...punitives usually take an egregious wrong that includes "willful or wanton" conduct and really having nothing to do with injury/harm to the plaintiff but are rather a civil penalty)

Regardless what the NCAA decides to do, Penn State wont rebound from this scandal for a VERY long time. Why would a highly/decently rated recruit go to that mess. Indiana is now a better option for football in the Big 10 than Penn State. I have no idea what the NCAA will do, because this type of thing could have never been considered when the rules were drafted. It is unbelievably disturbing.

Athletic Director and head coach involved.... if the NCAA doesn't come down hard on them......more of a joke than they already are.... :brick:

Total lack of institutional control. Death Penalty. This is waaaay worse than the SMU scandal

SMU was not even the worst offender. They are just the one's who got in trouble. Texas was pissed at SMU. Some of the guys were talking about Penn State and Paterno. Everyone I heard talking wants Penn State and their football program to pay heavily. The thing is just how to bring down Penn State? One of the guys said that the NCAA rules don't care if boys were raped in the shower but it would care if the boys were bought gifts and were future prospects. One of the guys wondered if the Sandusky charity could be one way to groom future prospects for Penn State. Another guy was thinking that Sandusky might have something on Paterno to use as leverage therefore making it difficult for Paterno to get rid of Sandusky completely. And one of the girls said that her creepy feelings about Paterno just proved who he truly is in her eyes. To me, none of this surprises me. Penn State doesn't seem to qualify for THE death penalty but their program needs A death penalty. I hate thinking about all the money and air time that Penn State will get. Listening to the ESPN guys is just sickening. One radio guy was acting like he was so surprised about Paterno. I'm thinking how can a grown man who is married and has a child be that ignorant and surprised? It just sounds so fake. Puke.

I hope the NCAA hits them with at least 2 years of the Death Penalty.

I originally pushed for the Death Penalty as well, but read a couple of things that have me changing my mind.

I found numbers from the 2009-2010 academic year, describing revenue and expenses for D-1 university athletic programs. Long story short, Penn State's football team made $50 million in profits, while the other 28 sports Penn State offers, had a net loss of $32 million. If you kill the football program, you are essentially killing every other athletic team at Penn State, and punishing a whole lot of student athletes that had nothing to do with some old creepy guy having his way with little boys 10+ years ago.

With all the impending civil lawsuits (predictions of damages exceed $100 million), and with the understanding that Penn State's athletic department is self-sustaining (doesn't take any money from the university's operating budget), I can't see a way in which the university could come up with the $32 million a year to fund all the other athletic teams when they are already going to have to be paying legal settlements.

That being said, I have no idea what the punishment should be, as you can't really do anything to the team now, and not punish people who had no part in the scandal at all.

Just saw on Twitter:
PSU president cites taking away $2.6m in bowl revenues (given to charity) as school "being on the right road." Dept rev was $116m in 2011...

I've decided that since this was not just a football problem (since the AD, President, and all board members covered it up) the NCAA should kick Penn State out for an indefinite period. They are still welcome to sponsor whatever sports they like, but they won't be able to play any NCAA teams. The NCAA could say something along the lines of "we'll review your application for re-entry into the NCAA in 3-5 years", then make them prove that they've made significant changes within the culture of the school before they allow them back in.

This scandal is, in a nutshell, exactly what is wrong with college athletics. The school put athletics so far atop a pedestal at the university that they were willing to sacrifice countless numbers of young boys to avoid embarrassing the almighty football program. They (and every other school in the NCAA) need to be shown that ACADEMICS, not athletics, should be the primary focus of institutes of higher learning.

Is this a severe penalty? Absolutely, but not even 1% as severe as the horrors that were allowed to continue for so many years. Make an example of Penn State, NCAA. Show that you've got some balls, and maybe, just maybe, the rest of the schools will take notice and change their ways as well.
