Pacific

Count me as one of the people that was pretty devastated when Conway announced he was switching to football. I can't complain one bit about what he's done for the football team because no doubt he's been a valuable weapon on the gridiron. I mainly cringed because I felt we lost a dynamite athlete with quickness that would've in all likelihood progressed to our starting point guard even as a freshman. No question in my mind our hoops prospects for this season shrank a bit when he switched to football.

Once Adams and Marshall are healthy this is the line up Edwards need to have in there :

Doesn't matter who starts but :

Big man rotation of
Naughton/Moemeka/Herndon/ Dalton - Use The first two at the 5 mainly and the other two at the 4 spot
Wings- James/ JMAC/ ADAMS

Let either Adams or James bring the ball up the floor at all times.

Those need to be the top 7 players.

Bring Marshall in to give spot minutes at the wing to JMAC, James or Adams.

Then bring Lieberman in for only "spot" minutes to give either James or Adams some rest.

Use that 9 man rotation with the top 7 playing most of the time.

Lieberman only gets spot minutes and no Kelley.

I think having James, JMAC and Adams all on the floor at the same time is as good as about any MWC PG and wing combo in the league. Just hasn't happened yet. You get two guys that can create with James and Adams on the floor at the same time which then gets JMAC open for his shot a lot more as well as Dalton and Herndon open and creates more space for Naughton to work down low.

Hope Edwards does this instead of what we have seen when those guys get healthy.

Just my opinion but I think that would work best.

The only piece I would disagree with is that I think there is a spot for Gorski in the rotation. He, like the rest of the Pokes, didn't play well last night but he has been our best perimeter shooter and has been very solid.

I like the potential in Moemeka. I think our frontcourt will be pretty decent by next year with Naughton, Moemeka, Dalton, Herndon, and Jones all in at least their 3rd year of D1 hoops and having some experience under their belts. Will be up and down this year, but I like that group long term.

Backcourt really needs creators though. Not sure our PG for next year is on the roster right now.

Yeah you are right. I did that by mistake. I knew I was missing someone. Gorski for sure is in the rotation. I would take Lieberman completely out of the rotation and insert Gorski and let him have a good amount of minutes as well. Make it a top 8 rotation of players and then let Marshall have spot minutes for the other guys

I like the idea of going full on platoon squad with this team. They need to get used to that style of attacking teams with their depth. They're only going to be even deeper next year. It's up to them to figure out how to utilize that to their advantage. I like a 9 man rotation playing fast and physical. Wear other teams out, frustrate them. Hell we might need to bring in Barnes just to bang the shit out of some dudes in the key for like 3 mins ya know?

Was a loss to Pacific bad or good???? I'm up in the air still trying to decide

It's debatable, when you compare teams RPI it wasn't like losing to San Jose it was more like losing to a possible tournament worthy team.

Men's Basketball - Pacific Tigers (2016-2017)

RPI Rank: 72 SOS Rank: 53 Record: 2-2 (0-0)

Men's Basketball - Wyoming Cowboys (2016-2017)

RPI Rank: 240 SOS Rank: 331 Record: 2-1 (0-0)

It's not like we're world beaters and we were picked pretty damn low in our own conference. Going to be a lot of games that slip away from us this year. We could have taken advantage of how awful they played and had a solid win under our belt instead we just lost to a team we no one expected us to beat anyway.

Pull a Road Miracle and beat Cal on Fri, wouldn't that be awesome!!!!

If Mac plays up to his potential from the land of 3, someone is running point that plays with intelligence and our injured players are on the floor we'll beat them. Those are all pretty big if statements but I have a lot of faith in this team with Adams and Marshall on the floor.

I would disagree with you on that. Black Hills State yes Wyoming not so much.
Wyoming isn't the lowest quality of Division I out there. You telling me he couldn't be a decent player at a Big Sky school?

Yes that's how I see it. I don't think he is a starting D-1 caliber pg. It's kinda of obvious after three years.

After some time to reflect, I'm fully joining the band wagon that we're limited at point. Austin Conway was the solution to that, and I don't blame the coaches for Austin wanting to play football. That doesn't change the reality: our point guard situation is a hot mess.

I'm not sure I can see a clear identity or vision for our program right now. Maybe that's Allen Edwards and staff getting a feel for things, but the depth might actually be a problem. It seems like we're trying to be all things for everyone, when we need to thin the rotation down to 9 players and develop a strategy on how to win games. Yes, we have real depth, but Averbuck doesn't deserve to be on the floor at all in games we can win. You can argue that Kelley doesn't either.

I know we're still a year away, and I still believe we might finish fourth this year, but we're going to have to figure out our identity pretty quick, or we're going to drop more ball games that we should have won.

It will help when we get Adams and Marshall back, but I don't know if adding two more guys to the 11 we played the other night is the answer. To me, the first step is figuring out who the nine-ten best players are, and then figuring out how we're going to win with those nine-ten guys.

We have some talent on this team, we just don't have a team for our talent right now. Right now, we look lost at the wheel.

I didn't get a chance to watch this game, but I am surprised at the hatred of Lieberman. Is he any worse than Grabau (spelling) was? I don't think this team needs a set point guard in this offense. James, Adams, Gorski, McManamen, should all be able to bring the ball up the court and initiate the offense, heck Herndon can even bring it up. Did Barnes play at all this game, I don't really see him fitting this offense very well, it will be interesting to see how he adjusts.

If you watched you would understand. The pg position is the obvious weak link

Here are Lieberman's stats through 4 games (does not include Chadron):

Minutes Played: 79
Total Points: 11
Total Rebounds: 5
Total Assists: 6
Total Turnovers: 5
Total Steals: 3
Field Goals: 4-17 - 24%
3 point goals: 2-13 - 15%
Total Free Throws: 1-1

That's just not a great stat line for your experienced point guard, especially since he's a junior. You can't sugar coat this one, the Pokes are hurting at the point and Lieberman and Kelley are not the answer.

There's a gaping hole that Conway should be filling. Not complaining, but it is what it is. At least Conway is a really good football player.
