Our national perception

I watched Wyoming on ESPN every thursday night in Tennessee growing up. If Wyoming could get on national TV, I think people would watch. There is a certain mystique about Wyoming and people would watch if we were actually on national TV.

Even it was only 3 games a year on ESPN, it would pay off more than what we are currently doing. We MUST change the culture around here win or lose.

I wholeheartedly disagree (except for the changing culture part.) Nobody outside of the Mtn time zone gives a crap about Wyoming.

I highly doubt you watched Wyoming every Thursday night on ESPN because we had 1, MAXIMUM 2 games on ESPN back in those days. Now you can watch every single game in Tennessee if you so choose.
I wholeheartedly disagree. Wyoming was a top 25 team back in those days. So they got quite a bit of national coverage. This born and raised Tennessean sure gives a crap about Wyoming football!! (and I realized i'm in the minority as a southerner)

Different time and day. Back then, a current powerhouse like Oregon barely had a team let alone a fan base. Wyoming has fallen a long ways and its gonna take some serious work for them to ever be a team people "want to" watch. I don't have my Wyoming media guide with me right now, but I remember reading what the all-time high record for Wyoming attendances was sometime back in the 70's. It was an average of 25K. If that's all they could get to see the team live, I have a hard time believing the country was Cowboy football mad.

One thing to consider is that a quite a few (maybe a majority?) of Wyoming alums don't typically stay in or around Wyoming.. so our fanbases are bigger outside of the state, but they're like satellites stationed around the country.

You're kind of exaggerating many of your points. Wyoming never had more than 2 games a year on ESPN back in the day. And Wyoming was a top 25 team one year back in those days. Not multiple years. Apparently they didn't get enough national coverage to even make a bowl game in that one year despite being ranked. There wasn't enough national outrage to change that. I remember having to listen to most if not all the 96's team away games on the radio because they weren't on TV until the WAC Championship.

Most people who aren't Wyomingites or UW grads could care less about UW, even if we were doing good. There's no shame in admitting that, it's the truth. Nobody cared last year that Tulsa finished in the top 25 outside of Tulsa, Oklahoma or that SDSU finished in the top 25 outside of San Diego, California.

Considering we only went to the Fiesta Bowl in the 1970s (and got creamed by the defending national champs in Oklahoma), and the program had taken a big hit with the Black 14 incident in 1968-1969, it's a wonder we averaged so much. Our only winning season was in '76 during the 70s.

And that's okay! Its Wyoming's team....there is no Wyoming State of Wyoming Tech threatening the Pokes. The goal is to reach out to everyone in the state. Make it so little Wyomingites want to grow up and be Cowboys. Anyone outside of that is majoring in bandwagonry.....and nobody likes that.

If there's anything I've learned about Cowboys fans, alumni, etc., there's a certain attitude you don't see anywhere else. Not cocky, but pridefully confident. Regardless if the team sucks like it does now. Never short on pride......outsider fans just wouldn't be able to completely grasp what being a Poke fan is all about. It would seem so phony.

Unlike a vast majority of Hawaii fans who tend to be bandwagon types. As soon as they a bad game, out comes the"fire-current coach.com" crap. So glad I'm a Wyuomingite!!!

Well, technically, there is a WyoTech...

Afterall, the rejects from Tech go to BSU to major in "cummunications" or truck driving.

You seriously stay up at night worrying about this? You need to get a life. Whatever happens happens. It, in my opinion, has little to do with how good we are. It has to do with the small fan base which equals not very much money to be made off of ole Wyoming. TV money drives all of this and there arent enough people on either coast and/or in the south that want to watch Wyoming.

exactly, everything is about spin

people watch boise even though to most of the country they are viewed as a bunch of dumb potato farmer's kids

the difference we have here is that no one knows shit about wyoming...hell, if you were to spin it right, you could make wyoming sound down right exotic (exotic in the sence that it is something that you're not used to not in the commonly held definition that exotic somehow means "warm and tropical")

Would somebody be kind enough to give the cliff notes on this thread. I lost focus after "I hate to think".

Thank you.

Quebec is a long ways away... welcome to the board!

Thanks :)

Howdy from hell aka Oklahoma City. I've been to Canada (Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton) on at least two vacations. B. C. and Alberta are both beautiful provinces. Loved watching the CFL on ESPN back in the 1980s although I never understood the rouge thing.

CFL players wore rouge? Mascara and eyeliner, too? Do tell.

And on edit: Can't believe I wasted my 100th post on that.
