Our D-line definitely didn't play well last night, but I am more concerned about another postion...linebacker. Outside of Hendricks, our linebackers played HORRIBLY against the run. Muhammad and Lewis were getting eaten alive by SUU's O-line. They just don't have the size or strength to keep big O-lineman off of them. Yeah, they have good speed, but they are damn near worthless against the run.
I was not impressed with those two guys one bit. They were both slow on their reads which gave the offensive lineman time to get good blocking angles on them, and then they were very slow to get off the blocks. When that happens, 5-7 yard runs will occur all day long.
We spent 90% of the night in zone pass coverage. If that's the case, it really isn't that important to have blazing speed at the LB position. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing Schober and Hendricks on the field at the same time. Put the slower one in the middle and the other at the strong side spot. Texas has recommitted to the run this year, and I'm worried they are going to have a huge day next Saturday if we don't address this problem. Their starting RB is 250 pounds and doesn't go down easy. We better toughen up and learn how to tackle real quick or wins won't come easy.
