OT Kill retiring for health reasons

I think he has a condition where he can suddenly have a seizure at any given moment without warning, though not 100% sure on that.

Hasn't Kill's coaching staff remained mostly intact throughout their last few jobs?

If I am correct on that, I doubt the Gophers go looking for a new coach, it would make more sense to just hire from within. Not sure if it's the OC or DC that would get the promotion. Going out and getting a new guy would essentially throw them into a rebuild. A program that doesn't need to be rebuilt, should not go out of house for the hire.

Defensive Coordinator Tracy Claeys was made interim head coach. It sounds like if they hire within, he is the guy; a lot of Minnesota fans are not very pleased with their OC. There are a few guys on this board that also follow the Gophers, maybe they have some insight.

Beav, you are right, every time I have seen Minnesota on tv they always talk about how the staff has been together for a long time...Claeys has been on a coaching staff with or under Kill for the past 21 years.

I think the reason he retired was because he realized he couldn't change. A couple years ago when he had the bad seizures and then came back he discussed how he changed his life and was not gonna work 23 hours a day and get good sleep and learn to relax a bit but I think he has realized he can't do that. I watched the press conference he gave...Probably the saddest retirement announcement I've ever seen. Feel terrible for him.

Yeah he has an incredibly loyal staff. A combined 140 years together. 7 of the 10 coaches have been wit hhim longer than 15 years. Hope the team plays well the rest of the year and they give the job to the DC.

OMG I'm on a Minnesota message board and someone just suggested the Gophers should go after Troy Calhoun. HELL no. Then again, he's a BYU fan, so that just shows his lack of judgment and awareness....

Terrible deal and thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. Has to be rough for him and I always feel bad when something medical limits someone or keeps them from doing what they love.

Hopefully, he finds something else in life that he takes a lot of joy in.

Yup. They started out together in 1995, Kill's second year at Division II Saginaw Valley State. Claeys was the D-Line coach. From there, went to D-II Emporia State to FCS Southern Illinois to MAC school Northern Illinois to Minnesota. BTW Limegrover (OC) has been on Kill's staff since 1999 at Emporia State.

Classic example of working themselves up the coaching ladder.

Bruce Feldman(I think) had him on the list of 9 guys who could replace Kill article. I would be happy to not have to deal with that Asshole anymore but would feel bad for Minn. and sice I kinda follow/cheer for them  . They wouldn't be dumb enough anyway.

Another aspect to consider with this opening is the fact that Minnesota is currently operating without a hired AD. They are functioning with an interim AD as former AD Norwood Teague was fired after several sexual harassment allegations. This begs the question, will the interim AD hire the next coach, or will it go to a hiring committee? If the interim decides to hire, I would think that Claeys is the shoe-in hire; if it goes to committee, who knows what will happen.

The feeling around the team right now is that Claeys should be the guy. He wants the job, Kill thinks he should get the job, he was the interim when Kill was away from the team two years ago, etc.

I believe he also had two seizures in the last week...Final straws in his health situation.

Like Glenn here, a really good QB has been a key missing ingredient to reaching the highest levels of the big10, although 8-5 was a good record last year, historically speaking.

It was the Gophers' first Jan 1 bowl game since 1962. QB or not, the team has gotten it done. Claeys hasn't done anything to not deserve the job.

EDIT: I should add that most of the recruits (strongest class they've had in a while) are staying committed and want Claeys to be the next coach. This includes a kid who chose the hometown Gophers over offers from Oregon and Ohio State. He's the one leading the charge to keep everyone committed.
