OT: Did you know thread....

Everyone knows UW alum, Kenny Sailors, is credited with inventing jump shot. Did you know that another UW alum is credited for having a part in creating wheelchair basketball?

Helluva story if you haven't heard about it.

Around most, really.

But I figure that over the next 25 years many schools are going to start thinking about that question.

At the risk of derailing a thread about a Wyoming native, alum, and hero....

with our leadership, I would agree with you guys. If we are going to stick with Burman, football might have to go.

UW can't get rid of football. It pays the bills besides Burman can't see the forest for the trees even if you forced him to. Still say he's getting paid under the table by the unnamed ones from Provo!

I bet Wyoming football loses more than it makes in terms of $$$

Between 85 or so scholarships, the coaches salaries, the lack of fans in the stands, the lack of general demand etc. Hell most schools run at a deficit, I bet Wyo and it's history is certainly one of them.

For the record, I'm not saying Wyo should get rid of football. I am saying we are a basketball school that its fans still try to pretend we are a football school or at least some what relevant in football.

I believe I saw figures that showed football is in the black but athletic department is even . Football pays for other sports

Football is the only reason we have other sports, It's not making a killing but it's keep everything else above water. Basketball this year will give us a good year because for the first time we make some money.

This thread also digresses, but Wyo2dal is correct, the ONLY sport making money recently has been football. It has only been about a 2 mill/year profit.

Bball lost money, but will make a little this year.

Our plan has been to provide minimal investment and reap small rewards. I'm afraid with the trends in college football, Burman's "vision" is not sustainable. I think the increasing costs will soon chew up the minimal profit football generates.

Already, over the past 10 years, costs have increased by over 114% on average (NCAA FBS) while revenues only increased 85% or so. Burman didn't generate revenue but he also didn't spend much during that period. I guess our bottom line wasn't damaged too badly, but our competitiveness suffered greatly.

On our current path, we are destined to a future of mediocrity. Low risk and low reward. If costs continue to rise, that model is not sustainable. We will have to decide if we want to increase the risk and hope for a good reward or not. If it is the latter, football will have to be closely evaluated.

Agree with everything. I would just include a note of caution when trying to evaluate the composition of athletic budgets. How revenues/expenses are assigned by sport can be a bit of mystery. For example, if you look at USA Today's breakdown (http://sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/finances) it gives you a breakdown by type of revenue (ticket sales, contributions, institutional support, etc.), and the OPE site gives you a breakdown of expenses/revenues by sport. However, it isn't at all clear how those assignments are made and whether or not there is any consistency between institutions.

For example, how are CJC contributions divvied up by sport? Likewise student fees, media rights, etc. UW really doesn't generate that much revenue that can be directly tied to an individual sport. There is ticket sales, seat licenses, game day revenue, and maybe road game guarantees in football (Michigan State, etc.), but our largest sources of revenue are non-sport specific.

Anyway, agree that Football is the primary driver of many of those non-specific revenues, so it is the sport that drives the bus for the UW athletic department. Just not sure we can speak with confidence regarding whether or not Men's BB generates positive revenue based on the OPE report.

This has nothing to do with Burman.

The football arms race has been lost by everyone except 30 schools or so. Over the next few decades a lot of schools are going to have to decide whether football is worth it, especially with looming questions of reduced public funding for universities, paying players, liability for head injuries, insurance costs, and playing for scraps in lower tier bowl games, which are generally money losers.

It's going to be tough to navigate.

Very good point and agree 100%.

No, only about 30 schools make profits on athletics. Much more than that generate revenue off of football; including Wyoming.

Wyoming has been outside of the averages on revenue AND spending which did protect our bottom line somewhat. However, our competitiveness suffered. Whether by choice or no other option (due to his leadership ability), that has been Burman's policy.

Frankly, he is lucky he has football, is the only school in the state, etc. Amazing that despite such a poor program, it has been able to generate revenue. I only wonder where revenue would be with success?

I completely disagree. An AD (LEADER) with a vision, solid work ethic, aspirations, connections, (ala Jack Graham for instance) could absolutely position Wyoming Football for the next round of expansion. Instead, we are in wait and see mode, TBA / TBD mode, and it is frightening as hell...especially for those of us who are primarily Wyoming Football fans.

What do they say at Oregon State?....."at least we have rain".

I love that whatever I do just makes you hate Oregon State. Awesome to know I have that type of effect on you :)
