OT - Antwaan Randle El

I totally agree with you that people bitch way too much and worry about things they should just leave alone. Having said that, head injuries is in a whole different universe from bodily injuries. You can fix a leg, knee, arm, shoulder, etc. You can't fix a brain.

I would much rather limp the rest of my life than go through the things that Junior Seau and Mike Webster went through.

Football... The sport that does everything to protect practically your entire body, won't be around. A sport that practically EVERYONE LOVES? Won't be around...

But Boxing, a sport based on literally fighting (something you get flagged for with pads on) is okay? They have padded gloves, so it must not be the same, right? But these guys 80% on the time aim for the head. These guys who have the power to punch with a force of over 1,000 lbs, bash the other guys, unprotected face. They get broken jaws, lose teeth, broken cheek bones, broken noses and swelling to the eyes... And Concussions, on occasion that would make you question if the guy would come back for more and continue his career... And he generally does.
And don't get me start on MMA! A sport with even less padding on the hands and even less rules for safety comparative to boxing and definitely to football, and it makes multi millions, and it isn't even in question to the safety of players as compared to football. Here the injuries occur to the entire body. Blount force truama, broken bones to the face, shoulders, arms, hands, ribs and legs... And Concussions. These guys literally tear each other apart. But it's a travesty when a "padded" player receives a significant injury.
Comparatively, more MMA fighters are injured with career ending injuries than to football players. Now we're talking pros. But I'll even add in the college game, out of the literal thousands of players, chances for concussion is slim. And generally that concussion is mild, we only hear of the major concussions, which knocks the number down even more. I'm failing to see how these other two professions are okay.
And I question the integrity of people who "choose" to play a physical sport, knowing the risk that they put themselves in. Succeed in said sport. Make a significant better living in said sport that the vast majority of the country. And then questions the "games integrity". As if the sport has never tried to protect its players...

And yet, Rugby has been around quite longer. Has always had less pads, and seems to be just fine, because it's an international sport.

The Running of the Bulls has been brought to question in America far more than in any other country, including Spain, yet thousands every year join, "WILLINGLY" knowing full well then risk of 1-5 of them during that run.
Bull fighting is still a full on profession, and the risk is significantly higher of injury or death than football.

Racing, yep. They get a helmet. And a car that is caged around them for padding, yet go hundreds of miles per hour and we wait in anticipation for the "big one" to happen every year. Cars thousands of pounds going 100 mph flipping out of control. Broken bones, concussions, dehydration, and death... Still going.

Worse yet, fencing without a face mask. If I had a nickle for every eye ball I've seen rolling across the floor...

Seriously though, with rugby isn't it illegal to smash into a player, don't you need to wrap up for a legal tackle. Something like this would make football much safer. It'd slow the game down, but it'd be safer.

It would be safer but then ESPN wouldn't have as many highlights as they do now. People just love violence.

Basically football for us Americans is today's version of gladiators during the days of the Roman Republic/Empire.

There needs to be a pretty in depth study on whether it is only concussion oriented or concussion and diet or supplement oriented or concussion and drug oriented.
I think there is a lot to be said for our way of life and the affects that come about. Most of these studies are coming from players who played a while back, who did not have extremely healthy diets, who used roids and had concussions. These guys may have caused a perfect storm in their bodies that allowed all three of these to increase in their issue. I don't recall many/ if any football players who played in the era of no facemasks and lighter helmets to go out in retirement getting depressed and wanting to kill others or themselves. It seems to be about post 1980's type of play, with more drug used and higher artificial supplement use. But we would "NEVER" question Western Medicine and the multi BILLIONS of Dollars they Make off of keeping people sick and making them "less" healthy???
From cancer to flu to most other ailments, it amazes me how we seemingly get worse and worse in this country instead of better. Yet, not a cancer epidemic elsewhere... Oh sure, they have cancer... But a majority of people actually heal and are cleared from it in other countries far more than here. Sure they have Flu's that, for some reason the strains are traced back to the good Ol' USA... Other countries eat healthier whole food diets with very little artificial supplements and have a far healthier life than those here who have average diets and utilize artificial supplements.

Just saying...

Don't get me started on the absolute idiocy that is people propagandizing the "harmful effects" of GMOs or that vaccines are bad for you or cause autism. GMOs are for the vast majority safe and the extremely small number of side effects caused by vaccines are far outweighed by their benefits. But that is certainly an argument for another board and time.

I do agree however, that more research needs to be done in the area of concussions as it is really only an area that is starting to be looked at.

Correct, you have to attempt to wrap up the player when making a tackle. Leading with a shoulder and not bringing the arms is a penalty. Also, tackling with the arms up around the neck and head is a penalty as well.

A former Montana wide receiver just decided to retire from the Griz because of concussions.. he had several in the last two years. There's a professor at UM that has a grant through the NIH that was funded by the NFL to study concussions.. he's trying to line this young guy up to study his brain. UM is doing some pretty fascinating work in the realm of concussions.. they were studying the effect of soldiers getting concussions in warzones from IEDs... so their experiment was giving rats meth at time of concussion. Not trailer park meth like your neighbor makes, but pharmaceutical grade.. the thought is that if you can give a dose of meth to a concussed person it basically "freezes" the brain to prevent further damage.. they've gotten the study approved for human testing. Really quite fascinating.

Fox Sports has already anticipated the future of football...

Just saw a stat. 81 of just over 90 NFL players tested had chronic brain disease.

They need more studies at each level. My hunch is that high school is relatively safe but when the biggest risk starts to occur needs to be identified.

No other sport except boxing has repetitive hits to the head like football. Grown men can make their choice but more work needs done at lower levels.

My cousin is a superintendent of a school district in Colorado, and he thinks football will be dead in High Schools within 10 years.

The liability for the school district is just too high.
