Two Parts:

1. What is your favorite beer to enjoy while watching (live or on TV) football?

2. How much PROFIT do you think UW would make by selling beer at Football & Men's / Women's Basketball?

For me...the first part is pretty easy...Shock Top Belgian White. Delicious and not over-filling. Goes well with spice foods (nachos, wings, green chile, etc.).

The second part is a little more complicated. But I put my math below:

Assuming we average 20,000 fans at football games. And of those 20,000 fans - 25% drink beer, and would drink at least one beer. But, for math sake - of the 5,000 beer drinkers - the average conservatively is 3 per. That is 15,000 beers per game, 6 games per year. At $6.00 a pop, that is $540,000 in sales. Profit after costs, lets assume 50% - so $270,000 in the pocket for football.

Assuming we average 4,000 fans at combined men's women's basketball games. Same percentages, etc., with roughly 30 home games combined, that would equal...1,000 beer drinkers (3 beers per game) times 30 games, times $6.00 per beer. $540,000 in sales. So - $270,000 in the pocket for basketball.

Pretty cool how my math worked out. But by just selling beer at the War and AA (hoops) - to gain a half-million in profit (very conservatively) would be worth it IMO. Realistically that could be a $1,000,000 per year cash cow for UW if it was done right.

If I bought it at a store, probably Blue Moon or Sunshine Wheat. But I'm probably drinking a home brew. :D

I think your profit margin is a little high. I'd say it's probably in the neighborhood of 30%. But I also think your estimates of how much they'd sell is a little low. I remember one year at the MWC tourney selling out the Thomas & Mack! Maybe a little skewed for that event, but I still think it's closer to 50% that would be buying at least one beer at a game. Which makes the math work out about right.

Interesting conversation.

GO POKES!

I am drinking anything with the Leinenkugel's name on it. Their beers are so damn good. They offer a number of varieties that really run the gambit and hit all the right notes. Beers I like to grill with, beers I like to chill with, beers I want to eat mexican food with, they have them all.

Beer profits, I don't even know where to start. I think the main benefit would not necessarily come from individual beer sales but from a partnership with a beer company. Marketing, branding, and perks like infusions of cash and facilities would be the big deal. Like when coors came in and offered to dome the War if we served their beer. A scenario like that is where selling beer would be awesome.

The profit on $6 is less than 50%? I say you're making $4 on every beer. A cup? .25. Draft beer? Maybe .75/cup since a bottle of beer is over a buck RETAIL. Equipment/staffing $1

Granted it was a basic setup and time was donated to sell the beer but The Bud Cup In Rock Springs sold $1 beer and made thousands during a three day hockey tournament. Some nights there would be couple hundred people. City Council made them sell it $2 to discourage over drinking lol

Alaskan Pale Ale, Leinenkugel Summer Shandy, or just good old Coor's Light (if I don't feel like drinking).

Beer sales seem like a no-brainer. At least give it a shot for a couple of seasons and see what any consequences may be.

Don't typically drink beer and watch football.. if I do, it's usually whatever Missoula seasonal is around from one of our seven breweries. Basically, down with InBev, bring me all of your craft beers!

If it's a beer and isn't some bullshit 3.2% (or less)...I'll drink it. I love them all...if I'm just looking to tie one on I'll go with Coors Light, but typically for a game I'll head over to the liquor store and make my own 6-pack, grab a couple wheats, a couple IPAs, maybe a stout to finish the evening off.

May I suggest you never come to Oklahoma....the beer is 3.2% shit here.

I'd go for a Red Hook ESB or a Bent Nail IPA.

I'd say McPeachy is probably not too far off on the numbers, maybe a bit low in my opinion. I understand the negatives of beer at events, but they will never outweigh the positives. Just seems like a no-brainer to me.

when i do, which is rare, Bud Light and Redd's Apple Ale

I think we would due to sponsorship etc...and advertising dollars etc..perhaps a "domed" stadium as Coors has always talked to us about that with naming rights etc....it's all pipe dreams etc...i'd enjoy some suds during a game that's for sure

You guys get Bent Nail over there? I can only find it one place here, and they brew the beer in this state. It was a medal winner at the Great American Brewfest a few years ago.

Am I the ONLY one on this board that drinks Coors Light? Love light lagers. Can't stand ales.

Maybe? I can't stand Coors Light... I drink other lagers, though. I actually drink most beer outside of sours, and I'm a bit skeptical toward Scotch Ales (like Oskar Blues' Old Chub, which is terrible).

I do too Wyokie, but I also enjoy a wide variety of beers, basically anything but Bud Light...can't do it.

I can't stand Bud Light mainly because it's brewed near Fort Fart. Coors is brewed in Golden, CO.

I had a very unpleasant experience involving many, many trips to the urinal and nary a buzz once when celebrating a friend's graduation in Norman. 3.2 beer is the absolute worst. Never forget.

Beer here is the absolute worse. That's why whenever I head back to the Rockies, mainly CO and WY, I drink beer as much as possible there.

We have Bent Nail on tap at a few spots in Bismarck. Good stuff! I'll have to look for it in the bottle, our stores have tons of craft beers, so I'm thinking I'm in luck.

I'm usually drinking homebrew when watching any sports on TV, Banquet Beer while tailgating.

That being said I think you may need to revise your numbers just a bit. Profits would probably closer to the 30%-35% range, but still it's better than nothing at all. I'd be down for 2-3 16oz beers at football games. It'd also prevent me from loading up before the game, rushing out at half time and slamming a beer before the second half.
