One was flagged, one wasn't

If you didn't already know the calls I guarantee you'd guess wrong:

The still of Carder actually makes it look better than it was. He started leading with his helmet 3 yards before he hit Smith.

Good riddance TCU and that scumbag Patterson. It sucks that we lost this game, but what I'm more pissed off about is the possibility of losing Smith for a otherwise winnable game against Air Force that could seal our bowl fate.

The helmet-to-helmet calls were inconsistent the entire game. I don't want to be the bad guy, but not all of them were in TCU's favor. The call on Ogbanna's TD was definitely NOT a personal foul, neither was the was called on us seen above. If you're gonna make these calls or not make these calls, you got to be consistent. That's all I ask.

The picture of the hit on Smith proves that he lead with the head, most definitely. It also proves that it wasn't late, however, as some are suggesting.
 
The one on Smith shows his hands are actually a little ahead of his helmet, according to that pic I say it was good call. I hate to say it but to me it looks to be a good call. As I said in another thread I would not have called it had i been officiating the game.
 
Like I mentioned, the picture makes it look better than it was. He lead with his helmet, hit him with his helmet first, and brought his hands up late.

I think the flag on Ogbonnas TD was actually pass interference, not a personal foul.

Nope, "unneccesary contact above the shoulders" as that man said over and over again. Never heard it ever worded like that before. If it was pass interference they wouldn't have marked it off on the kickoff, it would have been declined.
 
I wouldn't have had a problem with the no-call on Smith if they were following the precedent of the calls earlier in the game. I had more of a problem with them neglecting the obvious P.I. on the sideline that same play.

Anybody else notice the facemask/full helmet tackle later in the game after Smith was out that wasn't called?

Regardless of the officials giving as much help to TCU as they could in the 2nd half here is also what cost the Pokes the game:
1. Kick coverage was absolutely awful! Even kicks 2 or 3 yards deep in the end-zone were going past the 40 most of the time, and what was with the squibber after the personal foul? Why not just let Sully boot it?

2. Defense was atrocious. Make a damned tackle is all I've got to say about that, so many instances where a huge stop could've been made but wasn't due to the inability of defenders to complete the play and actually bring the man down after getting there.

3. Offense let opportunities slip through their fingers. Again it's the idea of finishing plays. The big Smith run I can understand, your QB is typically not very quick. But there were so many times a receiver made the catch but didn't finish the play and pick of a huge gain or score, instead someone would step out or not cut to the correct side of a block. These little things cost the Pokes TDs instead of FGs or even FGs or TDs instead of no points at all. This game should have been one, the Pokes need to finish plays on both sides of the ball.
 
The flag on the Ogbonna TD was for launching into a reciever above the shoulders, which was on the player that did not actually make the tackle (Ogbonna was already tackled into the endzone before the other defender lauched towards the upper body). It was the correct call.

I haven't seen clear replays on the Brett Smith hits, however the B. Burns penalty was bs.

Reminds me of a few years ago against TCU when Sween was taken out of a game on a cheap shot (though I believe the speed of the game can make it hard to pull up in many situations). I just wish the refs had consistent rulings on these plays.

Head is clearly going backwards of both hits because he is being hit under the chin in the head not in the chest. You can see the amount of whiplash the first hit would have had on him it's really a wonder he was able to get up and play. There is no room for that type of play in college sports I'm all for good hits he is a dirty player or at least was this game.
 
The first hit is the one that should have been flagged, in my opinion. The second one (where he got hurt) did look clean on the replay where it was actually shown inside the frame... that said, if the first one had been flagged, the game changes completely, and the second one doesn't happen, at least not in the same way.

Are you talking about the play where Smith was rolling out and completed the pass to McNeil for the nice gain, when Carder blew him up? If so I thought that was a terrible no call...couldn't believe how many cheap shots there were in this game, pretty sickening that Patterson teaches/allows his kids to play that way...I thought he was a decent coach. Glad they are leaving to the Big 12, hope they become nobody's there getting killed by Texas, Oklahoma, OSU, A&M, etc.

Always loved watching Tank and think he's a helluva player..Tank, next year the 1st hit today will cost you $35K and the 2nd was reviewable.

The whole game was called like shit. TCU held on almost every play and there were at least 5 uncalled blocks in the back on the returns. And the TCU player kicking Smith in the back after he was down was billshit. Todd "Im pretty goddamn drunk and stupid" Christianson may have thought it was fine but even the guys in the studio said it was an uncalled for deal.

1st one would have cost him 35K and the second one would have cost him a 3 game suspension. I haven't seen anyone bitch about any hard hits on this forum before, but I wish the MW would take action.
