One minor problem with Shyatt

Let me start by saying that I love Shyatt and love what he's doing....But I don't understand why he doesn't red-shirt the freshman he doesn't intend to play......He's doing the same thing with Haldorson and Mcmanamen that he did with Marshall and Smith last year. They get very little experience yet they burn a year of eligibility......If he's not going to red-shirt these players they need to be playing, even in the UCSB game where we won by 28 both Haldorson and Mcmanamen only played three minutes.......I respect Shyatt so I have faith that he's doing the right thing, but his use of some of the freshman in his two years back confuses me.

Not to say that this will happen, but remember that basketball isn't like football. These guys can see some limited playing time and still redshirt this season. Now maybe Larry wants to keep them available just in case, but just cause these guys are seeing some early season action doesn't mean that they can't still redshirt for the season.

Actually the NCAA says that once. they step onto the court they lose their redshirt

Nah, it's just like football. As soon as they step on the court they have burned the redshirt. You can receive a medical redshirt after having played in a certain percentage of games, but that's it.

McManamen and Haldorson have burned their redshirt already.

In regards to the OP, I agree. I thought that about Marshall last year and McManamen this year. I wouldn't put Haldorson in there because frankly we need him to play a few minutes this year as he is one of the 9 players that will see minutes (starters plus Adams, Cooke, Sobey, and Haldorson). Otherwise Cooke is our only bench player in the frontcourt and there will be times when foul trouble forces us to use more than just Cooke. Better to let Austin get some minutes now, so that he is ready when that happens in conference play.

I disagree in situations where we don't have depth. DC's decision to redshirt Thompson and then later flip-flop cost us both a redshirt and a game.

That's where I would make the distinction between someone like Haldorson (who we need to play) vs. someone like Marshall or McManamen who aren't going to step on the court during meaningful competition.

Much like DC should have recognized that we could not win with Kirkegaard under center, Shyatt probably knows we can't realistically play Sellers against D-1 competition. That means we need Haldorson for front court minutes.

I should have probably noted in my earlier post, that I have heard that Shyatt wanted to redshirt Marshall last year, but that Marshall did not want to be redshirted. I can't verify if there is any truth to that.

I'm sure Shyatt has his reasons for doing it the way he does it and we as fans are not going to be privy to that information always. The guy has been part of two national championship teams and his top assistant helped take a couple of teams to final fours and we are 9-0. I'm sure he has talked to McManamen and Haldorson or anyone else on the team that doesn't get as many minutes about it so not sure why us as fans should worry about it. Just my :twocents:

Marshall and Smith, refresh my memory, who where there and why aren't they with us any longer, did they transfer?

I have a feeling that a big part of the reason for no red shirt is that we are not very deep and he knew some freshmen had to play. But he isn't sure how the players are going to progress throughout the season. Naybe Haldorson or Mcmanaman will develope slower but could come on during conference season and contribute. I think in the future when we have a more expereinceed team we will see more redshirts.

I agree this is 100% about having depth for injury or anything else, We haven't had depth in a long time and I would rather we have it and in some of the lower games or games with a lead those people get in games.

This was kinda my point. In basketball you see teams play guys a few games and then "medically" redshirt them as long as they're under 20% played. While these guys aren't injured, Often these teams are still able to get these med-reds using the excuse of illness or some exaggerated minor injury. Not sure if this is a tactic Shyatt and staff will employ so this might not happen.

I totally agree. I do not get it, but maybe the players are unwilling. Except where a career-altering injury was involved (Quin Higgins) when was the last time you saw someone who was better player as a Freshman than as a 5th Year Senior?

Because if he red shirts them we have 8 or 9 guys on our team, we need them. It is very rare to red shirt guys at this level for no injuries. He knows what he is doing.

Exactly, that's why you don't redshirt these guys. But after the season is over if you didn't have to use them then you apply for the medical redshirt. Some teams do this so that they have the extra depth if it becomes necessary later in the season, but they also can get these players some early season playing time before sitting them for the year. If depth issues arise then they play them as needed, if they aren't needed then a med-red is sought. Again, some staffs try to use this "loophole", others don't, not sure where Shyatt and Co. sit on the topic.

DUDES!!!! WTF are we talking about?!?!? This isn't football where we suck donkey balls and should be coaching Coach C! This is hoops where we should just sit back. Shut the fuck up. And watch the MWC coach of the year win MWC coach of the year and we win 25 games. and make it to the sweet 16

End of conversation. Why are we talking about this again???

I agree I can't really question Shyatt when he does what he does for us. He knows what he is doing and will do whats best for UW.

There is no doubt we need more depth that is capable of stepping into a game and contributing in a quality way. Probably 75% of all the teams could say the same thing. There were a combination of several things that affected our performance in the last game such as being a little flat after the game with Illinois State, final semester exams, just being a little tired, and having one of our starters on the bench nursing an injury. Building that depth on this team may take a little time because a large number of them are true Freshmen. We are in year two of Coach Shyatt's new staff. I like what I am seeing and the future looks very promising, but let's not get too impatient.
