Okay, so here's where we're at so far.

1. We have a QB in Smith. He makes some Freshmen mistakes, but overall, he's turning into a real leader.
2. We actually have an o-line that can do it's job.
3. Inconsisstent RBs and WRs (2 dropped passes that would have gone for TDs)
4. Good d-line, if undersized. They did pretty well in the second half, but got overran in the 2nd.
5. LBs do alright, when they don't get hit by a blocker.
6. DBs are too inconsisstent. Period.
7. We need a new DC.
8. Kicker needs more reps at field goals.

So, do we go bowling? UNM lost to Sam Houston State, AFA is struggling with FCS teams, CSU has no offense, and SDSU really only has Hillman.

agreed. Nebraska really only had an O line and Burkhead and still put it to us, so SDSU might be ok still. CSU wins, Nevada some how lost, UNM loses to Sam Houston (Locksley going to be gone?), UNLV getting run over by Southern Utah.

I'm an outsider and I've only watched you guys play once, but yes - you do go to a bowl, presuming you play like this the rest of the season.

I hope this wasn't just a 'get up for the big game' effort. If your team plays with this kind of toughness all year, if your WRs hold on to the ball, and if your QB keeps playing like he did tonight, I don't see any reason you can't get at least three more wins.

Good game tonight, Pokes. I came away impressed.

Thanks for not be a dick :thumb:

However, we need to win 4 more, CSU, UNM, UNLV, and either USU, SDSU or AFA. win 4-6 and we will get into a bowl at 7-5

I don't know that you need to win four more. You guys were like 3-8 last year, so you didn't go to a bowl, right? That being the case, you can count your win against an FCS school toward your bowl eligibility this year. You just can't do that two years in a row.

So if you win only six games this year, you can go to a bowl. But if you play an FCS team next year and win, that won't count toward your bowl eligibility.

Of course, if you win seven games this year that whole thing is moot for next year, too.

No we played two FCS schools this year and we can only count one so we still need 4 more wins to be bowl eligible. You can only count 1 a year win lose or draw, you can count one win but I will take it because we played 4 top 10 teams last year.

It comes down to what I said it would in the off-season: the Utah State game. Win......7-5 is possible. Lose....6-6 is the best case scenario.

Well I hope they are ready. Would hate to lose to the team CSU beat in OT tonight

Thanks, and Good luck to you the rest of the season. I think this bye week came at a perfect time. Utah State was looking a little scary until they lost to csu. I agree, if we play well we should get bowl eligible. We can't play down, or turn the ball over and lose to teams we shouldn't. I hope a bowl is in the cards but we have a long way to go. If we beat USU I think it is likely, if we lose I think we will have to pull an upset later to get there.

USU is very important, but I don't think it means a 6-6 season if we lose. I think we have a legit chance at beating everyone but BSU. Not much of a chance against TCU, but it wouldn't be impossible. I'm not downplaying the importance of USU because if we do lose, then we aren't all that good and the chances of winning the other conference games seems that much more difficult. Teams match up to each other differently. I don't think AF can chalk UW as a win. That game is always tight.

I think we are going to give TCU a run for their money at home....I know it doesn't change the whole game, but Tanner Brock is out for the rest of the year and he is a monster! I was so impressed with Burkhead...dude is a BEAST. Pokes played well the 1st half and made some big mistakes in the 2nd that Nebraska took advantage of (which is what a good team does). I fully believe we can beat USU, CSU, UNM, UNLV, SDSU and Air Force...give TCU a run for their money, no chance against Boise.

Again....I reserve judgement until after the USU game. I've seen way too many Wyoming seasons in which they start out well and then face plant come October for me to jump the gun.

Will the Pokes DESERVE to go to a bowl?

Here's how I figure it:

Next game is after a bye week. That means about two weeks to prepare for a good but beatable team even if it is on the road. Loose and you are in trouble.

SDSU - a tought, speedy team, on the road, BUT two weeks to rest/prepare.

UNLV and New Mexico at home against pussycats. Even THINKING about losing and no bowl.

So there SHOULD be 4 wins right there. No excuses.

I have to ask, what kind of "Freshman mistakes" did Smith make? I didn't see any of those, really. I saw a few mistakes, but every single QB out there makes plenty of mistakes. If anything, he stood his ground even when he knew he was going to get hit, he threw the ball away when he needed to, and tucked it and ran when he had no other option. Sure he threw an interception when the game was already decided, but I think that had more to do with where things were at during that part of the game than anything else.

Also, I wish we had managed at least one interception instead of like 5 or 6 balls batted down. There was one of them that Gipson should've caught for sure if he had been willing to hit the ground...

Not really the Husker game, as he did as well as could be expected with the dropped passes and stupid penalties by other players, but more of an overall performance (like his very first snap of the season, it slid out of his hands and right into the defender's hands). So yeah, he makes Freshmen mistakes, but they are few and far between.

All in all though I have to say it was his best game of the season. He was still playing a bit farther off the receiver than I would like but it looks like that's what they are told to do
