---GAME TALK---
Thoughts? Predictions? Concerns?

I don't have a fancy sponsor to draw people to my board, I did it the old fashioned way. :thumb:

But agreed, we need some action! This Ohio game should be a pretty even battle like it was last year in Ohio. Last year it took a come from behind, last second TD to win.. I expect much of the same this year, but hopefully won't need the last second game plan to win. The defense will be pretty unstoppable, in my opinion. Ohio's top threat from last year, RB McCrae, is gone this year, which should make a nice difference in the game. Wyoming shut him down last year and the defense forced a pair of INTs as well. On the other side of the ball, Devin Moore ran where ever and when ever he wanted to... almost 200 yds rushing. I suspect we'll rely on the running game this week.. I don't know if the passing offense is quite ready to be the powerhouse that it's capable of, plus this will be Dax Crum's first start in FBS football.. break him in slowly.

Should be a good game.. I'm gonna try to catch the game from a local sports bar here in town if any of them are carrying the MTN.. I need to check that out. How many of you guys out there are going to be at the game?

My prediction is 24 - 3 for UW. Sorry I haven't had the time to post lately. I am so stoked to get this season underway. I'll be at the game unless I have a heart attack or something before then. Looks like the weather is going to be great on our opening day of football.

WhatIfSports has the Cowboys finishing 7-5 this season, missing a bowl game. But they have 4 or 5 MWC teams headed to bowl games.. New Mexico, BYU, Utah, TCU, and Air Force, I think. Quite a few, as I remember. Could be a pretty accurate description, but really depends if the team goes into their 2nd half breakdown like we've seen the last couple of seasons.

ya, i dont even have an account with rivals.. scout.com i do, but they are slackin hardcore

anyways,
Our Defense could be the best its ever been this year. We know that Fletch, Unrein, and Givens are gonna get pressure alone on the qb. Not to mention the "Alaskan Asassin" Ward Dobbs (who is 100% unlike every game he played thru injury last year). I'm really interested to seeing rFR Gabe Knapton reaking havoc, as he is the prototype for and NFL middle linebacker. I expect the Gipson Bros to tear it up..from what I've heard..they have more talent than either corner we had last season.

Our O should be a hand-off game.. D-mo will tear apart their D. I think Dax will do well enough and i'm hoping he has no learning curve from seeing our stout-defense this whole time and just carries that over to a lesser D.

Overall- I think we will come out of the gates full force. D-mo gets two rushing tds..both over 40 yds long. Dax throws a 30 yd strike to Greg Bolling and we hit 1 field goal. Our Defense gets a pick-6 from a Gipson bro..
We hold their gasping O to 2 fgs

Pokes prevail 31-6 :D

The Ohio Bobcat's web site seems to indicate that its defense is the best part of the Bobcat's game this year. Strong defense vs middlin' offense equals what?

27-10 Wyoming

Offense takes a quarter to mesh, but they get it together after awhile.

All I have to say is that last years game was a fluke. Ohio scored on a kickoff, their longest pass of the season, and a pick 6. Wyoming is better this year and Ohio is worse than last year. The game is at 7,220 so I'm not worried. If people are really worried about this game then the Bowling Green game should really have you worried. Wyo by 21+

I don't want to jinx anything, or be too over confident, but I just don't see this being a game.

Ohio is the perfect match up for Wyoming. We managed to beat them last season on the road giving the rock up 7 times! Now, thats certainly not to say that we won't turn it over Saturday, we always do. But amid those turnovers we still won on the road, and thats the key. That was the ONLY game UW won on the road last year.

My guess would be, there are two scenarios;

Scenario 1. Dax Crum is shaky and we turn the ball over numerous times, and Wyoming wins in a reasonably close game, something like 24-13, or...

Scenario 2. Crum is ready. The offense is not turning the ball over. In this scenario, Moore and Seldon are going to be running wild, and oh boy, just wait to see what our defense will do if the offense is moving on the ground, scoring, and hanging onto the ball. Wyoming 41 Ohio 0

Just one more wake-up and it's game on. We are about to find out if it's all hype or finally the real deal. No more excuses, we have the talent and experience on this team to finish in the top 4. Everyone knows what will happen if we pull a flop like we have the last two seasons. I'll be at all the home games and maybe a couple of away games. I hope those that can't be there will be able to watch them on tv this year. GO POKES!!!!

I don't think we should've blown them out at all. Their offense was very pass reliant and our secondary is pretty thin.. they were the weakest link on the field today. The offense looked good, but didn't see quite as much spread offense (Bob Cole's specialty) as I would have liked. Crum made a few good decisions, looked good in his first 1-A action. Devin Moore looked good as well. I was really tired of seeing the reverse.. not a whole lot of success with it. Ohio's running game was a non-factor in today, as I suspected it would be.. our defense was too good for that. With that said, some things to work on in the secondary.. kick return team was excellent.. kicking team was not great as they gave up a lot of yards. I heard the announcers at one point say that Wyoming's kicking game was pretty bad.. I'm inclined to agree. Good win today, but this puts a lot of concern to the game coming up vs. Bowling Green.. a team that can throw the ball well.

We have ALOT of work to do. I just got home as well. There was not much I was impressed with today, however, I thought Dax Crum did a good job for his first start. The two interceptions were tipped balls. IMO our new OC did OK and didn't make any real dumb calls - nothing spectacular, but I would have called more play action plays the way they were keying on Devin Moore. As for the rest of it, I would say Joe Glenn's seat just got a little hotter - he might want to start cleaning out his basement.

The upside: Dax Crum, Devin Moore
The downside: special teams(once again), pass defense, OL(once again)
The uncontrollable: The MAC officials absolutely refused to call blatant holding right in front of them time after time.

I have been very impressed with Mike Breske (DC) in the past, but what I saw today did not impress me in the least. We made their QB and receivers look like Heisman candidates.

I think Glenn's seat is fine for now.. it's a win.. we'll take it.

The special teams had up and down.. our return game was awesome.. we led the MWC last year in kick return avg, and I see it happening again this year. Two HUGE returns, one called back because of a block in the back. However, giving up a 101 yard return wasn't cool. The pass defense was a weakness going into the season and will be all season long.. not much we can do to change that, we just don't have the depth and experience.. losing Stinson hurt the secondary.

The officiating was a bit suspect a couple of times.. namely, the pass interference call where the ball was thrown behind the receiver, and the receiver also falling down, but the CB was flagged for some unknown reason. I didn't think the officiating was all that great.

Breske's defense was great today.. except the secondary. They stuffed the run, which was fantastic.. our front 7 is great, but when we match up man to man, we're exposed, and that happened a lot today.

I pretty much agree across the board. Crum didn't look great, but I was encouraged by his performance. Defensively, I'm a little more concerned than many of you. Yes our secondary is weak, and we always knew that, but we didn't pressure the QB at all, and I expected us to. With our secondary, we will have to get to the QB a lot better. DIdn't see nearly as much blitzing. I think Breske may have let all the hype go to his head regarding his 3 down linemen. There will need to be more blitzing.

Now, on to the thing that pissed me off more than anything else by a long shot!!! Bob Cole. Why the HELL are we still employing a zone-read rushing attack!? We do not have an option threat QB! Defenses key on the Rb everytime, and it just slows everything down. We didn't fire Cockhill and hire Cole for more of the same plus a wide rec. reverse! I didn't see much in the Bob Cole dept. to be excited about...

Yeah, we didn't look great, in fact, barely "good" enough to get the win. I hope we were playing it a little close to the vest and not showing everything that is to come out of this offense. Also the D wasn't nearly as dominating as "the best Defense in the Glenn era" would have expected. All that being said....

UW found a way to win this close game. The Defense didn't let them run on us, and didn't have a chance to get to the QB with the quick drops and holding! (the most obvious to me, on the second to last play of the game, the DL is turned around he is being held so bad). I think Breske can shore up the loose coverage if other teams try that approach, I remember Stinson & Medina being in everyone's grill on short plays like that, the Gipson's will be doing the same. Casper Star has article how the young DBs played the first game as a bend but don't break philosophy. If it were not for those short passes, they wouldn't have had any offense.

Our offense was conservative, just enough to win. Down the road we will need to throw more to keep teams honest, but the main goal should be get the lead, get first downs to run the clock, protect the defense. I think the talk of running tough may have altered D-mo a little. We do need to focus on first downs first but after he gets the 4yrds or first down they are looking for, he needs to be himself and break off a crazy move to go the distance, only saw a couple chances for that on Saturday though, loved the stiff arm.

Special teams, the not-so-special teams were horrible. We had a nice return called back, that is to be expected now and then, the coverage team almost cost us the game, the return team almost let Ohio recover a short kickoff, and the punt team netted 2 yards after a short punt and a penalty. I think Glenn is right on, get the starters or however is best out there on the coverage teams and give em a break on Defense if needed, I would rather take my chances with the second string Defense than the coverage team.

THE GOOD NEWS IS, I think Ohio will prove out to be a better team than expected, and Wyoming still has a good chance to win 7 or more games. AFA racked up a ton of rushing yards against a creampuff team and we have a good chance to shut them down. It is only based off one week, but looking at the other MWC teams and thier schedules I would guess only 4 teams will end up with 7 wins, so we have a good shot at a Bowl Game. We played average and won, just think what we can do with a couple adjustments and play good. WE NEED TO FOCUS ON AFA, SHUT DOWN THE OPTION AND SHORT PASSES, KEEP THE CHAINS MOVING ON O, AND COVER KICKS, WE SHOULD WIN. GO POKES!

That sums it up pretty well. I was really disappointed with our play while at the game, but after thinking about it, I think I see what we were trying to do. That is coupled with the fact that Solich is a dam good coach.

AFA isn't going to make or break the season, but I think shutting down their running game will certainly tell a tale about how our defense will be this season. I was happy to see Southern Utah get pounded by Air Force.. they come up to Missoula next week for the season opener here.. they should get a little bit more of the same medicine. I think if we can shut down AFA's rushing attack, we'll be okay.
